[Cortical auditory evoked potentials as biomarkers of central auditory system maturation in children with normal and impaired hearing: scoping review].

INTRODUCTION: The central auditory system and its maturational aspects have been a topic of interest on the raise in recent times. Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) might be a promising electrophysiological tool, applicable both in the diagnosis of central auditory processing disorders and other conditions, as well as in clinical evaluation of amplification and cochlear implantation effectiveness in children. THE OBJECTIVE: Of this study was to perform a scoping review on CAEP as biomarkers of cortical maturation in children and infants with normal and impaired hearing. MATERIAL AND

Novel standardized indexes of brainstem auditory evoked potentials for predicting hearing preservation in vestibular schwannomas.

Hearing preservation (HP) during vestibular schwannomas (VSs) surgery poses a significant challenge. Although brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) on the affected side are commonly employed to monitor cochlear nerve function, their low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) renders them susceptible to interferences, compromising their reliability. We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients who underwent tumor resection, while binaural brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were simultaneously recorded during surgery. To standardize BAEPs on the affected side, we incorporated the synch

Relationships between fear of flying, loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials and frontal alpha asymmetry.

Previous research has suggested that fear of flying, which is defined as a situational, specific phobia, could overlap with depressive and anxiety disorders. Whether the neuronal dysfunctions including altered serotonergic activity in the brain and altered neural oscillations observed for depressive and anxiety disorders also overlap with alterations in fear of flying is unclear. Here, thirty-six participants with self-reported fear of flying (FF) and forty-one unaffected participants (NFF) were recruited. The participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the State-trait Anxie

Evoked auditory potentials from African mole-rats and coruros reveal disparity in subterranean rodent hearing.

Hearing in subterranean rodents exhibits numerous peculiarities, including low sensitivity and restriction to a narrow range of comparatively low frequencies. Past studies provided two conflicting hypotheses explaining how these derived traits evolved: structural degeneration and adaptive specialization. To further elucidate this issue, we recorded auditory brainstem responses from three species of social subterranean rodents that differ in the degree of specialization to the underground habitat: the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) and the Mashona mole-rat (Fukomys darlingi), which repr

Auditory evoked potentials in children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: In children, an acute demyelinating disease may evolve as a multiphasic disease with multiple relapses, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) and Long-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (LLAEP) contribute to the identification of either retrocochlear changes or other central auditory nervous system (CANS) changes. OBJECTIVES: To characterize BAEP and LLAEP in children and adolescents with MS and NMOSD and verify the diagnostic values of these potentials in each of the demyelinating diseas

A Review of the Role of Auditory Evoked Potentials in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Assessment.

Around 75% to 90% of people who experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are classified as having a mild TBI (mTBI). The term mTBI is synonymous with concussion or mild head injury (MHI) and is characterized by symptoms of headache, nausea, dizziness, and blurred vision. Problems in cognitive abilities such as deficits in memory, processing speed, executive functioning, and attention are also considered symptoms of mTBI. Since these symptoms are subtle in nature and may not appear immediately following the injury, mTBI is often undetected on conventional neuropsychological tests. Current neur

Auditory brain stem response and cortical evoked potentials in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

CONCLUSIONS: Delay in ABR and CAEPs wave latencies in children with type 1DM indicates that there is abnormality in the neural conduction in DM patients. The duration of DM has greater effect on auditory function than the control of DM. BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder. Evoked potentials offer the possibility to perform a functional evaluation of neural pathways in the central nervous system. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on auditory brain stem response (ABR) and cortical evoked potentials (CAEPs). MET

Evaluating long-latency auditory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of cortical hearing loss in children.

In centrally related hearing loss, there is no apparent damage in the auditory system, but the patient is unable to hear sounds. In patients with cortical hearing loss (and in the absence of communication deficit, either total or partial, as in agnosia or aphasia), some attention-related or language-based disorders may lead to a wrong diagnosis of hearing impairment. The authors present two patients (8 and 11 years old) with no anatomical damage to the ear, the absence of neurological damage or trauma, but immature cortical auditory evoked potentials. Both patients presented a clinical history

Clinical Usefulness of Loudness Dependence of Auditory Evoked Potentials (LDAEP) in Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

While it has been reported previously that the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) is a putative biological marker or a predictor of treatment response, there have been few studies of LDAEP in bipolar disorder. However, a recent study by Park and colleagues raised the possibility that the LDAEP could be useful as a biological marker of bipolar disorder. They found that the LDAEP was significantly higher in normal controls than in patients with either bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Lee and colleagues also examined the LDAEP in bipolar disorder and normal controls, and

Impact of loudness dependency of auditory evoked potentials on the panic response to CCK-4.

RATIONALE: Experimental panic induction with cholecystokinin-tetrapeptide (CCK-4) has been established as a model to study the pathophysiology of panic disorder. In line with the serotonin (5-HT)-hypothesis of panic disorder it has been suggested that the panicogenic effects of CCK-4 are mediated in part through the 5-HT system. The analysis of the loudness dependency of the auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) is a valid non-invasive indicator of central serotonergic activity. METHODS: We investigated the correlation between LDAEP and behavioral, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine panic respons

Effects of iron deficiency versus iron deficiency anemia on brainstem auditory evoked potentials in infancy.

There has been little or no evidence of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) among infants with iron deficiency (ID) that is not severe enough to cause anemia. To our knowledge, the effect of ID on auditory functions and/or potentials has not been investigated previously, though it seems reasonable that it should be associated with BAEP measures intermediate between those observed in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and in iron sufficiency, considering the role of iron in myelin formation and maintenance. We therefore aimed in this study to investigate the effect of ID on BAEPs by comparin

[Brain stem auditory and visual evoked potentials in children and adolescents with Guillain-Barré syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common acquired polyradiculoneuropathy in childhood. It has been conventionally regarded as a disease exclusively of the peripheral nervous system. The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in patients with GBS has been rarely described. The purpose of the study was to delineate the extent of subclinical neurological changes of CNS in children and adolescents with this syndrome. Thirty patients aged 8-18 years with GBS were treated in the Chair and Department of Developmental Neurology. The upper and lower limbs paresis dominated in clinical

[P50 component of auditory evoked potentials in persons with schizophrenia and their first degree relatives].

UNLABELLED: A pair of auditory stimuli presented in a 0.5 second interval cause a reduction of the P50 auditory evoked potential (P50 AEP) amplitude after the second stimuli in the pair. In some, but not all studies, a clear deficit of such P50 AEP gating was observed in schizophrenic patients. It was present constantly irrespective of the clinical state. This deficit was also found in first degree relatives of schizophrenic patients. However the results of the studies, as well as their interpretation remain controversial. AIM: To differentiate between P50 AEP in groups of schizophrenic patie

Auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials in coma following spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage: early prognosis and outcome.

The aim of this study was to check the prognostic power of auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in coma following spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage. Seventy patients comatose following subarachnoidal or hypertensive hemorrhage were submitted to ABR and SEP recordings during the acute phase of clinical course. Twenty-one patients survived (30%), two remained vegetative (2.9%) and 47 died (68.1%). The Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) was significantly related to the outcome (P < 0.001), but showed a low sensitivity, since about 50% of patients with GCS = 5-8 died

[Value of auditory evoked potentials of the cerebral brainstem in the diagnosis of retrocochlear tumors].

The use of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in the diagnosis of retrocochlear tumoral pathology has been established for years, but the development of magnetic resonance imaging for the same purpose calls for a review of the value of this method. We studied 200 ABR records made to exclude pathology. The results indicate that ABR is useful as a screening method in this type of pathology when carried out in a population with any auditory symptom, although it was not very suggestive. In most positive tests, the presence of pathology is not confirmed.

Auditory evoked potentials in aged gerbils: responses elicited by noises separated by a silent gap.

The compound action potential (CAP) and the auditory brainstem response (ABR; waves ii and iv) were recorded in young (4-8 month) and aged (33-37 month) gerbils using a paradigm similar to that used in some psychophysical studies of gap detection (a pair of identical low-pass noises separated by a silent gap). Response amplitudes were analyzed in terms of absolute amplitudes and the 'amplitude ratio' (the amplitude of the response to the second noise of a pair divided by that to the first). Response latencies were analyzed in terms of the absolute latencies as well as the 'latency shift' (the
