Chitosan Nanoparticles Entrapping Aqueous Psidium guajava L. Leaf Extracts: A Promising Approach for Topically Treating Disorders in Oral Mucosa.

Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) is a neotropical species whose leaf extracts demonstrate efficacy against cutaneous and mucosal inflammation and ulceration. This study aimed to prepare and characterize aqueous extracts of P. guajava leaves (EAPG) and incorporate them into chitosan nanoparticles for topical delivery to the oral mucosa. The extract was obtained by infusion, and its marker compound was quantified by a chromatographic method. EAPG exhibited antioxidant activity (IC50: 6.35-7.01 µg/mL in DPPH•; FRAP: 14.42-17.83 µg/mL ≈ 60 µM Fe2+) and anti-inflammatory potential by modulating the e

Topical methylene blue nanoformulation for the photodynamic therapy of acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease caused by multifactorial reasons involving excessive sebum secretion and inflammation by Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes). Various conventional therapies are available for the treatment of acne vulgaris; however, topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted much attention because of its great potential for sebum-reducing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. Although 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been broadly used as a photosensitizer for topical PDT, it has several limitations such as long incubation time, pain, and post-inflammatory hype

The characteristics of keratomycosis by Beauveria bassiana and its successful treatment with antimycotic agents.

Clinical findings and treatment of keratomycosis caused by Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic filamentous fungus, are described for an 80-year-old woman, who was referred to the hospital for ocular pain and redness on the 9th day after an ocular injury caused by the frame of her glasses. She had a long history of recurrent diabetic iritis and continuously used topical antibiotics and corticosteroids. At her first visit, a slit-lamp examination indicated a corneal ulcer confined within the superficial stromal layer, along with a slight infiltration and edema. Only a very few inflammatory c

Conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and blepharitis are among the most prevalent bacterial eye infections. Topical eye drops are convenient but often exhibit low ocular bioavailability due to anatomical and physiological barriers, which may contribute to subtherapeutic exposure and antimicrobial resistance. Besifloxacin (BFX), a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone approved exclusively for ophthalmic use, has poor aqueous solubility at tear pH and is currently marketed as a suspension requiring frequent instillation. This study aimed to develop and optimize besifloxacin-loaded nanostructu

Resolvin E1 (RvE1) Attenuates Atherosclerotic Plaque Formation in Diet and Inflammation-Induced Atherogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological and recent clinical studies implicate periodontitis as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Previously, we demonstrated that rabbits with experimental periodontitis and cholesterol diet exhibit more aortic plaque compared with diet alone. We also showed that a proresolution mediator, Resolvin E1 (RvE1), reverses the experimental periodontitis. Here, we determined whether oral/topical application of RvE1 attenuates aortic atherosclerosis induced by both diet and periodontal inflammation. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Thirty-nine rabbits on a 13-week regimen

Development of Miconazole-Loaded Microemulsions for Enhanced Topical Delivery and Non-Destructive Analysis by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

The antifungal drug miconazole nitrate has a low solubility in water, leading to reduced therapeutic efficacy. To address this limitation, miconazole-loaded microemulsions were developed and assessed for topical skin delivery, prepared through spontaneous emulsification with oleic acid and water. The surfactant phase included a mixture of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (PSM) and various cosurfactants (ethanol, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy) ethanol, or 2-propanol). The optimal miconazole-loaded microemulsion containing PSM and ethanol at a ratio of 1:1 showed a mean cumulative drug permeation of 87.6

Fabrication of a drug delivery system that enhances antifungal drug corneal penetration.

Fungal keratitis (FK) remains a severe eye disease, and effective therapies are limited by drug shortages and critical ocular barriers. Despite the high antifungal potency and broad spectrum of econazole, its strong irritant and insolubility in water hinder its ocular application. We designed and fabricated a new drug delivery system based on a polymeric vector for the ocular antifungal application of econazole. This novel system integrates the advantages of its constituent units and exhibits superior comprehensive performance. Using the new system, drug content was significantly increased mor

WITHDRAWN: Topical lidocaine for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of the original Cochrane review published in Issue 2, 2007. The cause of postherpetic neuralgia is damage to peripheral neurons, dorsal root ganglia, and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, secondary to herpes zoster infection (shingles). In postherpetic neuralgia, peripheral neurons discharge spontaneously and have lowered activation thresholds, and exhibit an exaggerated response to stimuli. Topical lidocaine dampens peripheral nociceptor sensitisation and central nervous system hyperexcitability, and may benefit patients with postherpetic neuralgia. OBJECTIVES
