Progression of intermittent exotropia in surgical and non-surgical patients: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is a common form of childhood strabismus, and greater exodeviation or poorer control at presentation are known factors influencing the decision to pursue surgery. However, existing studies have not tracked pre-operative progression longitudinally or directly compared these changes between patients who undergo surgery and nonsurgical controls. This study aimed to compare the clinical features and pre-operative progression of IXT between surgically and nonsurgically managed children matched by duration of follow-up. METHODS: The medical records of patients

Early postoperative alignment and preoperative stereopsis as determinants of success in intermittent exotropia surgery.

To assess the surgical outcomes of patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT) and identify factors influencing surgical success in a tertiary hospital setting. This retrospective study included 150 patients who underwent surgical correction for IXT of less than 50 prism diopters between 2013 and 2024. Stereopsis was evaluated using the Randot stereo test. Surgical success was defined as residual exotropia <10 prism diopters without diplopia symptoms. Preoperative variables were analyzed to determine predictors of surgical success. Surgical success was achieved in 74% (111/150) of patients. The

Efforts to improve the surgical outcome for exotropia and investigation of the insertion locations of the extraocular muscles.

In our previous retrospective study, we found that using the strabismus surgery dosages established by western strabismus mentors tends to result in undercorrection of Taiwanese exotropia (XT) patients compared with those in western populations. We also discovered that the location of extraocular muscle (EOM) insertion could vary by ethnicity. In this study, using a generalized estimation equation model, we compared the XT surgery outcome between augmented and original strabismus surgery dosages in Taiwanese patients. We also conducted an observational study to investigate the horizontal EOM i

The efficacy of part-time patching treatment for intermittent exotropia on different age groups.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is one of the most common forms of strabismus usually seen in the pediatric age group, the prevalence of IXT is higher in Africa and the Middle East. IXT treatment strategies include both surgical and non-surgical methods, non-surgical management is preferred in general as it is less invasive and avoids the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia. AIMS: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of patching therapy for the treatment of IXT in different age groups and to compare the success of patching therapy in preventing surgery in IXT patie

Altered Homotopic Connectivity in the Cerebellum Predicts Stereopsis Dysfunction in Patients With Comitant Exotropia.

PURPOSE: Comitant exotropia (CE) is a common eye disorder characterized by impaired stereoscopic vision and eye deviation. Previous neuroimaging studies demonstrated that patients with CE were accompanied by specific functional and structural abnormalities of the brain. However, the effect of impaired stereoscopic vision and eye deviation on interhemispheric homotopic connectivity remains unknown. METHODS: A total of thirty-six patients with CE (25 males and 11 females) and 36 well-matched healthy controls underwent magnetic resonance imaging scanning. The voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivit

Comparison of biometric and refractive changes in intermittent exotropia with and without overminus lens therapy.

BACKGROUND: Overminus lens is an effective non-surgical treatment of intermittent exotropia (IXT). Whether this treatment causes development of myopia is recently debated. This study evaluated ocular biometric changes in IXT children treated with and without overminus lens. METHODS: Children with IXT were randomly assigned to control and overminus groups. Cycloplegic refraction, axial length and other parameters (keratometry, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness) were evaluated for up to 30 months and compared between the groups. Axial length to corneal curvature (AL/CR) ratio was examin

Non-Paralytic Pontine Exotropia as a Predominant Sign of Brainstem Infarction - A Case Report.

The association of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) with exotropia in the contralateral eye is a rare finding, known as non-paralytic pontine exotropia (NPPE). We report a case of an 80-year-old woman with acute onset of diplopia on admission who presented with left eye exotropia with left-beating nystagmus whilst fixating with the right eye and inability to adduct the right eye on left gaze. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed two small areas of vertebrobasilar territory ischaemic stroke, one beneath the inferior portion of the aqueduct and another in the right occipital lobe. Our case
