Neural correlates of eye contact in face-to-face verbal interaction: An EEG-based study of the extraversion personality trait.

The extraversion personality trait has a positive correlation with social interaction. In neuroimaging studies, investigations on extraversion in face-to-face verbal interactions are still scarce. This study presents an electroencephalography (EEG)-based investigation of the extraversion personality trait in relation to eye contact during face-to-face interactions, as this is a vital signal in social interactions. A sample of healthy male participants were selected (consisting of sixteen more extraverted and sixteen less extraverted individuals) and evaluated with the Eysenck's Personality Inv

Linking "big" personality traits to anxiety, depressive, and substance use disorders: a meta-analysis.

We performed a quantitative review of associations between the higher order personality traits in the Big Three and Big Five models (i.e., neuroticism, extraversion, disinhibition, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness) and specific depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders (SUD) in adults. This approach resulted in 66 meta-analyses. The review included 175 studies published from 1980 to 2007, which yielded 851 effect sizes. For a given analysis, the number of studies ranged from three to 63 (total sample size ranged from 1,076 to 75,229). All diagnostic groups were high on neu

Positive Psychological Well-Being and Determinants of Social Robot Acceptability Among Patients With Heart Failure: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: Social robots (SRs) are innovative tools in health care, offering both medical and psychological support for patients with heart failure (HF). For successful implementation, patient acceptability of SRs is crucial. Living in urban areas and having a lower comorbidity burden have been linked to higher acceptability; however, the role of psychological factors remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between negative (eg, depression and anxiety) and positive (eg, optimism) psychological factors and personality traits (eg, openness and extraversio

Psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder as chain mediators between personality traits and cognitive functioning in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Personality is a unique behavioral trait; cognition is how an individual knows and understands things. It is essential for everyday daily living. In patients with breast cancer, despite the growing body of research on personality and cognitive functioning, exploration of the underlying mechanisms is still relatively scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of Big Five personality traits on cognitive functioning and the mediating role of psychological resilience and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) between personality traits and cognitive functioning in pati

Exploratory investigation of theoretical predictors of nomophobia using the Mobile Phone Involvement Questionnaire (MPIQ).

Despite the advantages that the development of new technologies has brought to our lives, it is also true that the problematic use of technology can have negative effects on some people, as the prevalence of nomophobia, defined as the fear and anxiety of being unreachable via one's mobile phone. While some authors are beginning to study the relationship of nomophobia with variables such as age, no investigation has yet been carried out into psychological variables. Our study contributes to the literature by looking at personality, self-esteem, gender and age as predictors of nomophobia, evalua

Relationship between dopamine system genes and extraversion and novelty seeking.

Dopamine transmission is known to play an important role in the reinforcement system of the brain. Studies have identified dopamine system genes whose polymorphic variants have been linked with the intensity of psychological traits reflecting the tendency to form behaviors characterized by impulsivity and the need for additional stimulation. The aim of the present work was to seek associations between polymorphisms in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and D4 dopamine receptor (DRD4) genes and personality traits in the Russian population. Studies of 130 subjects showed that carriers of th

Tennis elbow: associated psychological factors.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of tennis elbow is multifactorial. Overuse of the wrist extensors along with anatomic factors, such as flexibility problems, aging, and poor blood circulation, may play a role. This study investigated whether patients with tennis elbow have a different psychological profile compared with healthy controls. METHODS: Patients with clinical signs of tennis elbow, consulting at the Ghent University Hospital between September 2015 and January 2017, were offered a paper-and-pencil questionnaire about Big Five personality traits, perfectionism, anxiety, depression, work satis

A descriptive study of Myers-Briggs personality types of professional music educators and music therapists with comparisons to undergraduate majors.

The purpose of the current study was to determine personality types and demographic characteristics of professional music educators and music therapists. The researchers also sought to determine if personality types of professionals were consistent with undergraduate majors in those fields and personal characteristics as suggested by The Music Education National Conference (MENC) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). The research of Steele and Young (2008) found strong similarities and some differences between undergraduate music education and music therapy students. The possibili

Personality and symptom pattern in depression.

This paper reports relationships between symptoms and premorbid personality in a varied sample of depressed patients. Symptoms were rated by a psychiatrist at clinical interview; personality was rated by patients on a self-report after clinical improvement, using the Maudsley Personality Inventory and an inventory of obsessive, hysterical and oral personality. Additional ratings on the latter were obtained at interview with a relative. The most prominent finding was that patients with premorbid neuroticism also showed a neurotic rather than an endogenous symptom pattern. Additional relationshi

The dynamic interplay between neuroticism, extraversion, and problematic gaming in adolescents: A 4-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adolescent problematic gaming is a global public health issue, and is associated with numerous negative outcomes. The Big Two personality traits, neuroticism and extraversion, have been identified as significant predictors of problematic gaming in adolescents. However, most previous studies have been cross-sectional, limiting the ability to explore their mutual influences or causality inference. This study addresses this gap by employing a longitudinal design and utilizing the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) to examine the bidirectional relations betwee

Personality traits and coping strategies associated with treatment adherence in non-communicable chronic diseases: A systematic review.

Psychological dispositions and behavioral adaptations are central to understanding adherence in chronic disease. This review examined how these factors influence adherence in adults with non-communicable chronic diseases, analyzing which personality traits and coping strategies shape adherence. A Scopus and Web of Science search (2013-2023) identified 20 studies (n = 82,738), following PRISMA. Risk of bias was assessed with Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tools, and certainty with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). Are anxiety and depression just as stable as personality during late adolescence? Results from a three-year longitudinal latent variable study.

Although considerable evidence shows that affective symptoms and personality traits demonstrate moderate to high relative stabilities during adolescence and early adulthood, there has been little work done to examine differential stability among these constructs or to study the manner in which the stability of these constructs is expressed. The present study used a three-year longitudinal design in an adolescent/young adult sample to examine the stability of depression symptoms, social phobia symptoms, specific phobia symptoms, neuroticism, and extraversion. When considering one-, two-, and th

Evaluation of Internet Addiction and Relational Variables Among Nursing Students in Turkey During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

It is known that individuals use the internet more to escape from the psychological problems they encounter in daily life during the pandemic. Besides, it is also known that individuals with personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion might be prone to internet addiction due to poor communication skills. It is important to determine the relationship between the internet usage characteristics and the mental state of nursing students so that students can provide better quality health services in their education and professional processes. The present study aimed to determine the rela

Do depressive episodes lead to accumulation of vulnerability in the elderly?

The vulnerability-accumulation (or scarring) hypothesis postulates that the experience of depression induces a lasting increase in vulnerability, and through this raises the risk of recurrence. We examined the validity of the vulnerability-accumulation model for depressive episodes in later life. The sample comprised 26 elderly persons who had remitted from a depressive episode and 96 control respondents who were all selected from the participants of a large community survey among persons aged 57 years or more. Several psychosocial vulnerability indicators were assessed premorbidly, during the
