PURPOSE: To demonstrate the ability of multiphoton microscopy to obtain full three-dimensional high-resolution images of the intact mouse eye anterior chamber without need for enucleation.
METHODS: A custom multiphoton microscope was constructed and optimized for deep tissue imaging. Simultaneous two-photon autofluorescence (2PAF) and second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging were performed. A mouse holder and stereotaxic platform were designed to access different parts of the eye for imaging. A reservoir for keeping the eye moist was used during imaging sessions.

This study is based on a computer-assisted analysis 484 enucleated malignant melanomas of the choroid from The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, Melbourne. INTRODUCTION: Self-inflicted enucleation, also known as auto-enucleation (AE) or Oedipism, is an uncommon and severe form of ocular injury which presents as an ophthalmic and psychiatric emergency. Usually known to occur with untreated psychosis, this case is a rare report which demonstrates AE as a result of a subsequently diagnosed drug induced psychosis. A 75-year-old man, known with Morbus Kahler, was referred with a history of uveitis and hypopyon at the left eye. The uveitis did not respond to any steroid treatment. It was complicated with high intraocular pressure. Anterior chamber punction showed atypical cells of epithelial origin. A 40-year-old man developed obstructive hydrocephalus of uncertain cause followed by bilateral intraocular inflammation, which was initially diagnosed as toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. When visual acuity in the left eye decreased to no light perception and vision in the right eye was failing, a diagnostic enucleation of the blind left eye was performed. A diagnosis of cryptococcal endophthalmitis was established and the remaining right eye showed improvement after systemic anticryptococcal therapy.

Aged cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) from an established breeding colony displayed signs of spontaneous exophthalmos. Of a total of 118 colony animals that were older than 6 mo of age, 37 (31%) displayed signs of exophthalmos. These rats were clinically healthy and had no other signs of disease.
