The authors describe a 78-year-old woman who suffered a traumatic partial dehiscence of a penetrating keratoplasty on the day prior to presentation. While awaiting surgical repair, the patient experienced an expulsive choroidal hemorrhage necessitating a primary evisceration of the eye. This case is unique because the hemorrhage can be largely attributed to the acute dramatic rise in systemic blood pressure that immediately preceded it. Management considerations for patients with open-globe injuries who have poorly controlled systemic hypertension should include close monitoring of vital signs

PURPOSE: To evaluate conjunctival flaps as an emergency surgical treatment of corneal perforations.
METHODS: We revised a sequence of 15 patients who are yielded to total conjunctival flap and 3 patients yielded to partial conjunctival flap. They were made between 1980-1998.
RESULTS: Diagnostic to surgery included chronic ulcerative keratitis (2), bullous keratopathy (2), central ulcers (6), chemical burned (2), failed graft (3) and others (3). Seven flaps finished off keratoplasty, tree flaps retractions occurred and one eye needed evisceration. The rest of the pathology were controlled wit

PATIENT: Presentation of a 67-year-old female with persisting left hemifacial pain - very intense in the periorbital area, and an ipsilateral red eye. The patient had received analgesics and corticosteroids systemically, but no significant improvement was achieved. She had a history of anterior nodular scleritis in her left eye three years ago. Immunologic screening, especially for Wegener's granulomatosis, was negative. The ophthalmic evaluation revealed a left blind eye with diffuse anterior scleritis, an intercalar staphyloma nasally and superiorly, absolute angle closure glaucoma with rube

We aim to delve into the characteristics of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, focusing on the clinical manifestations, systemic risk factors, sources of the microorganism, and treatment outcomes among patients in our clinical series. All patients exhibited the classic symptoms of eye pain, redness, and reduced vision, with discernible risk factors of diabetes mellitus. In all cases, there were identifiable sources of bacteremia, most prominently liver abscess, followed by pneumonia and hand abscess. From the vitreous, positive cultures were obtained in all five cases,

Tubercular uveitis is a common manifestation of tuberculosis (TB) in TB-endemic countries. Due to lack of gold standard diagnostic tests for confirming intraocular TB, it is often either underdiagnosed or rarely over diagnosed. We report a case of a 28-year-old woman with diminution of vision in the left eye. She was started on antitubercular treatment (ATT) and steroids but she did not comply with the treatment. She developed progressive painful loss of vision consequently and was treated with vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade. After a complete course of ATT, she recovered, salvaging of e

Anophthalmic socket cysts are challenging to remove and incomplete excision has been shown to increase the risk of recurrence. This case series describes a novel technique utilising the fibrin sealant Tisseel (Baxter AG, Vienna, Austria) to retain the socket cyst integrity during surgical removal to facilitate its complete excision. Five patients were included and followed up for a minimum of 1 year, and there were no signs of recurrence in any of the cases. The surgical technique is described and illustrated. This technique is a safe way of simplifying challenging socket cyst surgery.

A 71-year-old male patient presented with decreased visual acuity, redness, and discharge in his right eye for 5 days. He had undergone evisceration of his left eye several years earlier. Before presentation, he had received chemotherapeutic agents for Kaposi’s sarcoma of the scalp. Slit-lamp examination revealed severe hypopyon and an extensive corneal ulcer with surrounding infiltrate, which extended to the deep stroma. Microbiological evaluation identified the causative agent to be multiple drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Based on culture and susceptibility results, the patient was s

PATIENT: This article describes a case report of a patient with history of bilateral orbital exenteration due to squamous cell carcinoma. Spectacle retained acrylic prosthesis was considered to be the best possible option in this case due to total lack of vision and related manual dexterity.
DISCUSSION: Main challenge in fabrication of spectacle retained prosthesis is to maintain its adaptation with the tissues during attachment of the screws. So, method of attachment of prostheses with the frame has been discussed in detail. The other concern was the increased weight of the prosthesis and as

Glial tumors of the retina are rare. Most are syndrome associated and include pilocytic astrocytoma in neurofibromatosis type 1 and subependymal giant cell astrocytoma in tuberous sclerosis complex. Acquired, more conventional, diffuse astrocytomas are less frequent. Ependymoma is exquisitely rare. Herein, we report the clinicopathologic features of the second case of retinal ependymoma. The tumor was sporadic in occurrence and unilateral, low grade, and of cellular type. Its chronic course and large size prompted an initial pathologic diagnosis of "massive retinal gliosis." The literature reg
