The epidemiology of eye injuries in Western Australia: a retrospective 10-year study.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Eye injuries constitute a significant cause of preventable lifelong visual impairment or blindness. It is important to identify the context in which these injuries occur to develop intervention programs to reduce the incidence and severity of injury. BACKGROUND: To evaluate the nature, external cause, place of occurrence and incidence rate of eye injuries treated at hospitals in Western Australia. METHODS: Retrospective, population-based study of patients presenting to all emergency departments or admitted to hospital with primary or secondary eye injuries between 2005 an

Predictors of traumatic eye injuries at high-risk for ophthalmic complications in children.

Eye injuries are important cause of ocular morbidity in children. There is lack of data regarding predictors for high-risk injuries that will result in ophthalmic complications. Most cases are managed by the emergency department (ED) physicians without immediate ophthalmologist evaluation. Our aim was to identify predictors for ophthalmological complications and to imply indications for early ophthalmologic consultation in the ED. A retrospective chart review of 834 patients ages 0-18 years who presented to the emergency department at Tel Aviv Medical Center between 2015 and 2018 following tra

[Fireworks injuries of the eye: an overview of current diagnostic and treatment options].

Fireworks can cause very different eye injuries. The injury patterns range from spontaneously healing conjunctival and corneal lesions up to a burst eyeball with very severe injuries in the posterior ocular section and traumatic enucleation. The precise initial diagnosis in an emergency situation can be a challenge for the ophthalmologist. Children and adolescents are often affected. The patient history with respect to the circumstances of the accident is particularly important to be able to estimate the extent of the injury and to initiate a conservative or, if necessary, emergency operative

Vascular endothelial growth factor in aqueous humor of patients with perforative eye injuries.

Considering that VEGF is the key factor for angiogenesis stimulation, we wanted to establish if VEGF level is increased in aqueous humor of patients with open globe eye injury. The study included 20 patients with open globe injury. During the surgery, aqueous humor samples were taken out and VEGF levels were measured by ELISA. VEGF levels were significantly higher in the aqueous humor of patients with open globe eye injury and uveitis, in patients with wound bigger than 2 mm and in patients where from injury to surgery passed more than 4 hours. VEGF levels were also higher, but not significant

Traumatic eye injuries due to large unusual foreign bodies: a Singapore case series.

PURPOSE: Traumatic eye injuries due to large foreign bodies (FB) are rare. The visual prognosis is often poor in these cases because of severe ocular damage. Staged surgical procedures with eventual enucleation or evisceration are often indicated. METHODS: Case series. RESULTS: The authors describe two patients with eye injury due to large FB with visual acuity of no light perception at presentation. Both had initial repair of the ocular injuries and removal of the FB. One patient with an intraocular FB eventually underwent enucleation; the other, with intraorbital FB, had evisceration as a

Airbags and eye injuries: epidemiology, spectrum of injury, and analysis of risk factors.

Although airbags measurably reduce the overall risk of injury to adults (including eye injury), and death from motor vehicle accidents, injuries attributed to airbag deployment have been reported. To identify reported cases of ocular trauma related to airbag deployment, a MEDLINE search from 1991 to 2000 was performed. A total of 263 injuries in 101 patients were identified. Patient demographics, details of the accident, specific ocular structures injured, and visual outcomes when available where tabulated and analyzed. The most common of these affect the eyes. Damage to the orbit and virtuall

[Primary wound closure after eye injuries. An analysis of 100 cases (author's transl)].

Penetrating eye injuries occur frequently during children's games or in the household, are caused by road accidents or at work. Of a series of 100 consecutive primary wound repairs 89% were perforation and 11% ruptures of the globe. In 53% of the analyzed injuries the wound was limited to the cornea, in 29% to the sclera and in 18% there was a combined corneoscleral wound. The lens and the vitreous were injured in one-third of the cases. The aim of the primary repair in penetrating injuries of the anterior segment is a watertight wound closure and the reconstitution of the anterior chamber. In

Explosive eye injuries: characteristics, traumatic mechanisms, and prognostic factors for poor visual outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Explosions can produce blast waves, high-speed medium, thermal radiation, and chemical spatter, leading to complex and compound eye injuries. However, few studies have comprehensively investigated the clinical features of different eye injury types or possible risk factors for poor prognosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all consecutive records of explosive eye injuries (1449 eyes in 1115 inpatients) in 14 tertiary referral hospitals in China over 12 years (between January 2008 and December 2019). Data on demographics, eye injury types, ocular findings, treatments, and fac
