Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition resulting from exposure to traumatic events, marked by persistent psychological distress and impairment in daily functioning. Risk factors for PTSD include genetic predispositions, neurobiological factors, as well as psychosocial and environmental influences. Specific demographic groups, such as veterans, first responders, and individuals in high-risk environments, are more susceptible to developing the disorder. Despite growing research, there remain gaps in understanding the full pathophysiology of PTSD, and exis

On the basis of converging research, we concluded that the controversial topic of unconscious blockage of psychological trauma (i.e., repressed memory) remains very much alive in clinical, legal, and academic contexts. In his commentary, Brewin (this issue, p. 443) conducted a cocitation analysis and concluded that scholars do not adhere to the concept of unconscious repression. Furthermore, he argued that previous survey research did not specifically assess unconscious repression. Here, we present critical evidence that runs counter to his claims. First, we inspected his cocitation analysis a

Background: Psychological morbidity is common following admission to adult intensive care units (ICUs), with many patients experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression as part of post-intensive care syndrome. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an established trauma-focused psychological therapy; however, its evidence base within critical care populations remains emerging. Objectives: This scoping review aimed to map the extent, characteristics, and findings of the available literature on the use of EMDR for ICU-related psychological distress.M

BACKGROUND: New intensive trauma-focused treatment (TFT) programmes that incorporate physical activity have been developed for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the unique contribution of physical activity within these intensive TFT programmes has never been investigated in a controlled manner.
OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial will investigate the effectiveness of physical activity added to an intensive TFT programme. In addition, the study aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the effects of physical activity on the change in PTSD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about patient characteristics predicting treatment dropout for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is scarce, whereas more understanding about this topic may give direction to address this important issue.
METHOD: Data were obtained from a randomized controlled trial in which a phase-based treatment condition (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing [EMDR] therapy preceded by Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation [STAIR]; n = 57) was compared with a direct trauma-focused treatment (EMDR therapy only; n = 64) in people with a PTSD due to childhood

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is a serious crime that is a prevalent mental and public health problem.
AIMS: Addressing the needs of SA victims and providing appropriate treatment are essential to reduce potential adverse short- and long-term outcomes.
METHODS: Our team undertook an extensive systematic literature review (published between January 2006 and July 2021) to provide evidence-based mental health intervention recommendations for adolescent and adult victims of SA. Where SA-specific research was limited, the literature and clinical practice guidelines on treatments for trauma-indu

Background: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic approach that has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through several randomized controlled trials (RCT). Solid evidence shows that traumatic events can contribute to the onset of severe mental disorders and can worsen their prognosis. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the most important findings from RCT conducted in the treatment of comorbid traumatic events in psychosis, bipolar disorder, unipolar depression, anxiety disorders, substance use dis

Background: Hope has been found to positively influence trauma-focused treatment outcomes and is associated with post-traumatic growth (PTG), which contributes to improved treatment efficacy. Objective: This observational study examined the extent to which hope predicts a decline in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and whether an increase in the level of hope predicts changes in PTSD symptoms. This study also investigated whether PTG mediates the relationship between hope and PTSD symptoms.Method: The sample included 339 participants (82.9% female) who were diagnosed with PTSD and

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a global health concern affecting 10%-15% of couples, often accompanied by profound psychological distress for women. Various psychological interventions being trialled in this population, outcomes have been mixed, underscoring the need for innovative therapeutic approaches. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, originally developed for trauma-related conditions, is a promising alternative. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EMDR therapy in reducing infertility-related distress and improving psychological well-being among women

BackgroundInfertility-related distress is associated with elevated rates of anxiety, depression, grief, and identity disruption. While existing frameworks often conceptualise infertility distress through stress and coping paradigms, these approaches may not fully explain the cumulative and reactivating experience of infertility distress. Trauma-informed perspectives, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, may offer an alternative framework for understanding infertility-related distress.ObjectivesTo explore how women experiencing infertility describe and make meaning of thei

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) brings new challenges for polio survivors, including muscle decline, pain, depression, and diminished quality of life. This study explored the potential of REAC neuromodulatory treatments to ease pain, improve mood, and enhance quality of life in PPS patients. 17 individuals with PPS (average age 54.8) received three REAC treatments: Neuro Postural Optimization, Neuro Psycho Physical Optimization, and Neuro Psycho Physical Optimization-Cervico Brachial. Pain, depression, anxiety, stress, and quality of life were assessed before and after using established scales. REAC

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental disorders in adolescence carrying a serious risk of adverse development later in life. Extant treatments are limited in effectiveness and have high drop-out and relapse rates. A body of literature has been published on the association between distressing/ traumatic experiences and development and maintenance of MDD, but the effectiveness of a trauma-focused treatment approach for MDD has hardly been studied. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy targets emotionally disturbing visual memories of traumatic life events, and may be deployed as an efficacious treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. A key element of EMDR therapy is recalling an emotionally disturbing visual memory while simultaneously performing a dual task. Previous studies have shown that auditory emotional memories may also become less emotional as a consequence of dual tasking. This is potentially beneficial for psychotic patients suffering from disturbing emotional auditory memories of auditory hallucina

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have led to a substantial influx of Syrian refugees, exposing them to severe traumatic experiences and contributing to a range of mental health issues. This systematic review examines psychotherapeutic interventions employed in psychological treatment studies with Syrian refugees, focusing on 22 articles identified across Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect. The review highlights the need for psychotherapeutic intervention for Syrian refugees due to the high prevalence of post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, grief, and loss which re

Clinical treatment guidelines consistently recommend cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The efficacy of these interventions among sexual- and/or gender-minoritized (SGM) individuals has not been thoroughly investigated within randomized clinical trials (RCTs), despite known elevations in exposure to potentially traumatic events and PTSD symptoms relative to cisgender heterosexual individuals. We conducted a systematic literature review to examine the frequency with which

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychological therapy used to treat trauma. While trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) is often used, EMDR has potential for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research has focused on adult populations, with limited evidence for children and adolescents available. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of EMDR for treating or preventing PTSD in children and adolescents. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were identified through a comprehensive search of s

BACKGROUND: Trauma-focused treatment is known to be demanding, resulting in considerable drop-out rates. Intensive trauma treatment programs for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have demonstrated significant and sustained results and appear to be better tolerated. However, how patients experience this treatment has been scarcely explored through qualitative studies, and only in the weeks following the end of treatment. The longer-term effects and experiences of the treatment remain under-investigated.
OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to explore participants' experiences of an intensive

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental health issues in young people is staggering, yet many face barriers in accessing professional help. These barriers, including stigma and long waiting lists, can prevent those in need from receiving the support they require. Teletherapy, which utilizes technology to connect individuals with mental health professionals, is emerging as a promising solution to overcome these obstacles. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of online therapy globally, with therapists swiftly transitioning to digital platforms. The effectiveness of online therapy in

Background: Psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents and young adults are hampered by high dropout rates. Looking at the results from adult treatments, short, intensive, outpatient treatment programmes may offer a promising alternative, but it has yet to be tested in this young population. Objective: To assess the results of a six-day intensive outpatient trauma-focused treatment programme for young individuals (12-25 years) with PTSD. The treatment combined prolonged exposure and EMDR therapy, supplemented with physical activity and

BACKGROUND: The Syrian conflict has been ongoing since 2011. Practical and scalable solutions are urgently needed to meet an increase in need for specialised psychological support for post-traumatic stress disorder given limited availability of clinicians. Training forcibly displaced Syrians with a mental health background to remotely deliver specialised interventions increases the availability of evidence based psychological support. Little is known about the effectiveness of online therapy for forcibly displaced Syrian women provided by forcibly displaced Syrian women therapists.
