[Retinoblastoma: genetic background, modern diagnostic methods and therapies].

Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular eye tumor of the pediatric age. It develops on account of a mutation on chromosome 13 in the 13q14 locus. New studies additionally demonstrated changes in the expression of other genes classified as oncogenes and suppressor genes. The tumor occurs in two forms--heritable (genetic) and non-heritable (non-genetic, sporadic). The most common clinical features of retinoblastoma are leucocoria and strabismus, however, they are not that specific because may also occur in several other eye diseases, such as Coats disease and toxocarosis. The diagnosis of

Adult Rhabdomyosarcoma of Ethmoid Sinus Recurring as an Orbital Mass.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a primitive, malignant, round cell neoplasm derived from mesenchymal tissue that exhibits partial skeletal muscle differentiation. We describe a rare case of alveolar RMS of ethmoid sinus, recurring as an orbital mass. A 23-year-old man with the chief complaint of anosmia and mild proptosis was diagnosed with RMS of the left ethmoid sinus and orbit following an endoscopic biopsy of the mass. He was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At 12 months after diagnosis, while still on maintenance chemotherapy, he presented to our eye hospital with a large me

Case report: Bilateral optic nerve sheath meningocele: clinical aspects.

Optic nerve sheath meningocele is an enlargement of the sheath itself, consisting of a collection of cerebrospinal fluid along the perineural space. It should be considered primary if it is not associated with orbital-cerebral neoplasm or with cranio-orbital junction malformations. We report three cases of bilateral primary idiopathic optic nerve sheath meningocele, two of them with gradual vision loss. The first case presented a history of monocular blurred vision of the right eye and headache. It was initially treated with acetazolamide without any improvement, after which optic nerve sheath

Conjunctival leiomyosarcoma.

PURPOSE: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a mesenchymal neoplasm with smooth muscle differentiation, being considered one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas. However, it rarely affects the eye, and when it does, it is usually located in the orbit, being extremely rare in the conjunctiva. OBSERVATIONS: We report a case of a 45 years old male patient, with a recurrent rapid growing conjunctival mass on the temporal limbus of his left eye, which was excised, and the anatomopathological report was suggestive of a grade 1 leiomyosarcoma. Since the lesion was recurrent, we decided to perform an extende

The uterine cervix--a new member of the family of immunologically exceptional sites?

As a bystander effect, immune responses against infectious organisms can damage normal cells. Immune privilege can protect such endangered tissues from immune destruction. One example is the eye where potentially devastating inflammatory reactions are prevented by active, counter-regulating processes that prevent lymphocyte activation. Recent epidemiological data from transplant patients in Sweden showed, surprisingly, that the frequency of cervical cancers did not increase in organ transplant recipients, in contrast to cancers of the vagina, vulva and anus. The same subtypes of HPV are known

Diffuse Meningiomatosis without Neurofibromatosis: A Rare Diagnosis with Atypical Presentation.

Meningiomas are amongst the most common neoplasms of the central nervous system; however, "multiple meningiomas" or "meningiomatosis" account for < 10% of cases. The association with neurofibromatosis 2 is seen in ∼50% of cases. We report a case of 35-year-old female patient who presented with left eye proptosis, left forehead swelling, and multiple cranial nerve palsies predominantly on the left side. Imaging evaluation revealed innumerable en plaque meningiomas forming a sheet-like nodular thickening along the dura, causing marked hyperostosis and extending into the orbits, cavernous sinuses

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in a reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

An 8-year-old female adult reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of Madrid for evaluation of a conjunctival mass on the left eye which had been present for about 2 months. A surgical excision was performed and biopsy material submitted for light microscopic evaluation which confirmed the diagnosis of conjuctival squamous cell carcinoma. Nuclear p53 immunolabeling was found in 52% of the neoplastic cells. Follow-up examination at 12 months postsurgery did not reveal recurrence of this neoplasm. Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma has not been reported pr

Right atrial B-cell lymphoma in a patient with ocular melanoma.

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is defined as a non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving only the heart or pericardium. PCL is extremely rare and often misdiagnosed. We report the case of a healthy 53-year-old male who originally presented with blurred vision secondary to a right intraocular mass. Enucleation of the eye confirmed a ciliary body melanoma and, upon further investigation, the patient was discovered to have a mass in the right atrium suspicious for a myxoma. However, resection of the atrial mass revealed a low-grade B-cell PCL. The occurrence of PCL in an immunocompetent patient being invest

Purtscher-Like Retinopathy Secondary to an Appendiceal Neuroendocrine Neoplasm Complicated by a Periappendiceal Abscess.

Purtscher-like retinopathy (PLR) is a rare retinal microvasculopathy that is induced by non-traumatic systemic illnesses. We describe the case of a woman in her 70s who was diagnosed with PLR, ultimately linked to an appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasm (ANEN) complicated by a periappendiceal abscess. The patient presented with sudden, unilateral, painless visual impairment. Initial examination revealed Purtscher flecken (PF) and cotton-wool spots (CWS) in the right eye, with corresponding hyperreflectivity and swelling of the inner retinal layers on optical coherence tomography (OCT). Systemic

[Breast cancer and B cell malignant lymphoma associated with Sjögren'ssyndrome--a case report and review of literature in Japan].

It is well known that some patients with Sjögren's syndrome develop lymphoproliferative disorders. Approximately 60 cases of Sjögren's syndrome associated with malignant lymphoma, predominantly of B cell origin, have been reported in Japan. On the other hand, fourteen cases of non lymphoid malignant neoplasm, including six of thyroid cancer and four of gastric cancer, have been recently presented in Japanese literature. However, cases of double malignant neoplasms in Sjögren's syndrome are very rare. We reported a case of Sjögren's syndrome associated with breast cancer and B cell malignant ly

Periocular basal cell carcinoma in a donkey: case report.

In horses, basal cell neoplasms are uncommon benign tumors with slow growth mostly reported in the skin and eyelid. Malignant presentation is even more uncommon. This report describes a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the periocular region of a 10-year-old donkey. The animal presented good body condition and a neoformation in the right eye, noted 3 months prior to hospital admission. At the ophthalmological examination, the mass was identified above and adhered to the cornea, measuring 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm. Cytology revealed a suspicion of a malignant epithelial neoplasm, characterized by groups o

SMARCB1 (INI1)-deficient malignant melanocytic neoplasm with histologically confirmed vertebral metastases in a young adult: a case report.

BACKGROUND: SMARCB1 (INI1)-deficient tumors are rare aggressive neoplasms characterized by biallelic inactivation of the SMARCB1 gene and loss of nuclear INI1 protein expression. Although melanocytic differentiation has occasionally been reported in SMARCB1-deficient tumors, intraocular presentations with histologically confirmed vertebral metastases in adults remain exceptionally uncommon and diagnostically challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman presented with progressive left retro-orbital pain and visual impairment. Ophthalmologic imaging revealed a choroidal lesion initially

Aqueous and serum β(2)-microglobulin levels in patients with senile cataracts, and cataracts associated with uveitis or atopy.

β(2)-Microglobulin (β(2) M) has been reported to be elevated in patients with a variety of neoplasms and inflammatory disorders, and is believed to be a sensitive although nonspecific marker for lymphocyte activation and/or proliferation. In order to investigate the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of various types of cataract, the authors measured β(2)M concentrations in the aqueous humor and serum of patients with senile cataracts (82 eyes), cataracts secondary to uveitis (16 eyes) and cataracts associated with atopic dermatitis (eight eyes). In addition, measurements were made in si

Because cutaneous hemangiomas may have involuted by the time a patient is diagnosed with a central nervous system neoplasm, it seems possible that in other such patients the association may have gone unrecognized. Cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma may be a rare manifes
