Objective assessment of visual attention in orthognathic surgery training based on eye tracking.

The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in visual attention between novices and orthognathic experts, as well as to provide evidence for use in developing and optimizing training strategies for orthognathic surgery. Novice and orthognathic experts were recruited, and their distributions of visual attention were monitored via an eye-tracking device while they watched orthognathic surgery videos. The percentages of visual fixation duration devoted to the areas of interest - surgical objects, instruments controlled by the main surgeon, and instruments controlled by the assistants

Objective estimation of fusional reserves using infrared eye tracking: the digital fusion-range test.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Horizontal fusional reserves are used in the diagnosis and monitoring of common vergence disorders, such as convergence insufficiency, which can cause asthenopia and impact near work. Infrared eyetracking technology shows promise for obtaining automated and objective measurements of fusional reserves, expanding options for screening, clinical testing, and at-home monitoring/vision training. BACKGROUND: Current clinical tests for fusional reserves rely on subjective judgements made by patients (for diplopia) and clinicians (for eye movements). This paper describes an object

Blink duration is increased in concussed youth athletes: a validity study using eye tracking in male youth and adult athletes of selected contact sports.

Objective. Diagnosing a sports-related concussion (SRC) remains challenging, and research into diagnostic tools is limited. This study investigated whether selected eye tracking variables would be a valid tool to diagnose and monitor SRC in adult and youth participants in selected contact sports, such as Rugby Union (rugby) and football (soccer).Methods.This prospective cohort study, with 70 concussed and 92 non-concussed adult and youth athletes, assessed the validity of five previously selected eye tracking variables for SRC diagnostics and management. The performance between concussed and a

Effect of Cleft Lip on Adolescent Evaluation of Faces: An Eye-Tracking Study.

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a delicate phase during life in which self-stigmatization increases and acceptance by peers becomes more important. However, little is known about how adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate experience this stage of life. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) adolescents are looked at by their peers and how they look at others with/without CLP. METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional study 54 observers (CLP versus control) performed an eye-tracking task and gave attractiveness/ valence ratings. For this purpose

The use of predefined scales and scores with eye-tracking devices for symptom identification in critically ill nonverbal patients.

BACKGROUND: Eye tracking (ET) may be a novel tool to enable nonverbal communication. We hypothesized that ET could be used successfully by intensive care unit (ICU) patients with artificial airways to express their levels of pain and mood, quality of life, and self-esteem with predefined scales and scores. METHODS: Prospective, monocentric, observational study, including patients with an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube and a history of mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours without delirium, and inadequate nonverbal communication skills. The ICU patients' pain was assessed with

Atypical gaze patterns to facial feature areas in autism spectrum disorders reveal age and culture effects: A meta-analysis of eye-tracking studies.

Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often present with atypical gaze patterns to others' faces, a finding substantiated throughout the literature. Yet, a quantification of atypical gaze patterns to different facial regions (e.g., eyes versus mouth) in ASD remains controversial. Also few study has investigated how age and culture impacted the pattern of gaze abnormalities in ASD. This research therefore conducted a meta-analysis of eye-tracking studies to evaluate age and culture effect on atypical gaze patterns of face processing in ASD. A total of 75 articles (91 studies)

Combined frequency-tagging EEG and eye tracking reveal reduced social bias in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

Developmental accounts of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) state that infants and children with ASD are spontaneously less attracted by and less proficient in processing social stimuli such as faces. This is hypothesized to partly underlie social communication difficulties in ASD. While in some studies a reduced preference for social stimuli has been shown in individuals with ASD, effect sizes are moderate and vary across studies, stimuli, and designs. Eye tracking, often the methodology of choice to study social preference, conveys information about overt orienting processes but conceals covert

Altered Saccades, Blink and Pupil Responses in Functional Motor Disorder: New Insight Into Neurobiological Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Functional motor disorder (FMD) is a common and disabling condition with incompletely understood pathophysiology. Eye-tracking offers a method to objectively examine cognitive and motor control processes and their underlying neural pathways. We aimed to quantify saccade, blink, and pupil responses in FMD and healthy controls performing an interleaved pro-/anti-saccade task, and to investigate the relationships between oculomotor measures and motor and non-motor symptom severity. METHODS: We conducted video-based eye-tracking in 104 patients with clinically definite FMD and 115 age

Remote Tower Air Traffic Controller Multimodal Fatigue Detection.

Remote tower (rTWR) operations are reshaping air traffic control but introduce significant human-factor risks, notably cognitive fatigue induced by prolonged screen-based visual surveillance. To mitigate these risks in a safety-critical domain where missed detections can be catastrophic, we propose a non-intrusive, multimodal fatigue detection framework fusing ocular and cardiac signals. A high-fidelity simulation study with 36 controllers was conducted to collect eye-tracking and electrocardiogram (ECG) data, from which a 12-dimensional feature vector-integrating gaze entropy and heart rate v

The effects of fatigue on the relation between ocular pursuit and interceptive performance in soccer experts.

Accuracy and duration of ocular pursuit of a target object have been linked to interceptive performance. Yet, previous assessments have not examined this relationship in the context of fatigue. We assessed the relationship between ocular pursuit and interceptive performance under peripheral and central + peripheral fatigue conditions. We determined ventilatory thresholds in n = 17 soccer experts using a ramp incremental protocol to individually tailor 45 minutes of cycling in the heavy exercise domain. Throughout the central + peripheral fatigue exercise, participants completed a modified Stro

Visual attention graph.

Visual attention plays a critical role when our visual system executes active visual tasks by interacting with the physical scene. However, how to encode visual object relationships in the psychological world of the brain deserves exploration. Predicting visual fixations or scanpaths is a usual way to explore the visual attention and behaviors of human observers when viewing a scene. Most existing methods encode visual attention using individual fixations or scanpaths derived from raw gaze-shift data collected from human observers. This may not capture the common attention pattern well, becaus

Visual attention to food cues and dental caries-Are they associated?

BACKGROUND: The role of diet has a key role in dental caries. Attention to food cues can be an indicator for food choices. AIM: This study investigates children's visual attention to images with healthy and unhealthy food cues and correlates it with that of their parents and with their dental caries status using eye-tracking technology. DESIGN: A total of 30 children with and without dental caries and their 30 parents were calibrated to the eye-tracking device (Tobii Nano Pro) to ensure standardisation. Participants viewed matching images of healthy and unhealthy food cues, whereas an eye-tr

Assessing Visual Avoidance of Faces During Real-Life Social Stress in Children with Social Anxiety Disorder: A Mobile Eye-Tracking Study.

This study measured visual attention (fixation count, dwell time) during two real-life social stress tasks using mobile eye-tracking glasses in children (9-13 years) diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 25) and a healthy control group (HC; n = 30). The influence of state anxiety on attention allocation and negative self-evaluation biases regarding gaze behavior were also examined. Compared to the HC group, children with SAD showed visual avoidance (i.e., fewer fixations) of the faces of interaction partners during the second social stress task. While visual avoidance in HC children

Early detection of cognitive decline in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease with a novel eye tracking test.

Due to an increasing number of dementia patients, the development of a rapid and sensitive method for cognitive assessment is awaited. Here, we examined the usefulness of a novel and short (3 min) eye tracking device to evaluate the cognitive function of normal control (NC, n = 52), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, n = 52), and Alzheimer's disease (AD, n = 70) subjects. Eye tracking total score declined significantly in MCI (**p < 0.01 vs NC) and AD (**p < 0.01 vs NC, ##p < 0.01 vs MCI), and correlated well with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score (r = 0.57, *p < 0.05). Furthermore,

Hearing Status Affects Children's Emotion Understanding in Dynamic Social Situations: An Eye-Tracking Study.

OBJECTIVES: For children to understand the emotional behavior of others, the first two steps involve emotion encoding and emotion interpreting, according to the Social Information Processing model. Access to daily social interactions is prerequisite to a child acquiring these skills, and barriers to communication such as hearing loss impede this access. Therefore, it could be challenging for children with hearing loss to develop these two skills. The present study aimed to understand the effect of prelingual hearing loss on children's emotion understanding, by examining how they encode and int

Magnitude Comparisons, Number Knowledge and Calculation in VeryPreterm Children and Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Cross-Population Study Using Eye-Tracking.

Difficulties in mathematics have been described in very preterm children, but their origins are not well understood and may differ from other populations with specific learning disability. Very preterm children, children with learning disability, and typically developing children were compared in mathematics skills, using standardized tools, experimental tasks, and eye-tracker measures. We assessed symbolic and nonsymbolic magnitude comparisons, number knowledge, calculation, as well as cognitive skills of 103 Italian-speaking fourth and fifth graders. Compared to typically developing peers, v
