Fluorescein dye improves microscopic evaluation and counting of demodex in blepharitis with cylindrical dandruff.

PURPOSE: To show whether fluorescein dye helps detect and count Demodex embedded in cylindrical dandruff (CD) of epilated eyelashes from patients with blepharitis. METHODS: Two eyelashes with CD were removed from each lid of 10 consecutive patients with blepharitis and subjected to microscopic examination with and without fluorescein solution to detect and count Demodex mites. RESULTS: Of 80 eyelashes examined, 36 (45%) lashes retained their CD after removal. Before addition of the fluorescein solution, the mean total Demodex count per patient was 14.9 +/- 10 and the mean Demodex count per l

[Microsporum canis tinea ciliaris and blepharitis].

INTRODUCTION: The involvement of eyelashes and eyelids by dermatophytes is unfrequent. CASE REPORT: We describe such a case in a 48 year old woman, who presented with unilateral blepharitis, resistant to topical treatments with antiseptics, antibiotics and corticosteroids. Diagnosis was suspected by magnifying lens and Wood's light examination; Microsporum canis was isolated from broken eyelashes and scales of annular lesions of eyelids. CONCLUSION: This case emphasizes the interest of mycological examination of eyelashes and eyelids in front of a persisting unilateral blepharitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis caused by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethyl cyanoacrylate contained in cosmetic glues among hairdressers and beauticians who perform nail treatments and eyelash extension as well as hair extension applications: A systematic review.

Current cosmetic regulations primarily focus on protecting consumers, not the professional user who is subjected to a partly different, and certainly more intense exposure to hazardous substances. Against this background, this systematic review aims to compile and appraise evidence regarding skin toxicity of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA; CAS no. 212-782-2) and ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA; CAS no. 7085-85-0) contained in cosmetic glues used among hairdressers and beauticians who perform nail treatments and eyelash extension as well as hair extension applications. Clinical management of trichotillomania with bimatoprost.

PURPOSE: This case report presents the use of bimatoprost 0.03% to help regrow eyelashes on a patient suffering from trichotillomania. Trichotillomania is characterized by repetitive compulsive hair pulling that leads to noticeable hair loss. Trichotillomania sufferers are affected by this condition in many ways including shame, embarrassment, guilt, and lower self-esteem. Although a formal therapy regimen does not exist, current treatment approaches include behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. In cases where a patient pulls the eyelashes, topical bimatoprost (Latisse) may be used to treat

A case of a child with anterior blepharitis caused by Candida albicans: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To date, there have been few detailed reports of the clinical findings in cases of fungal blepharitis. In this report, we present a rare case of anterior blepharitis in a Japanese child in whom Candida albicans was identified from secretions on the eyelash roots and present the clinical findings of the patient's eyelid margin via photograph documentation. CASE PRESENTATION: This study involved a 6-year-old Japanese boy with Treacher-Collins syndrome and severe ulcerative colitis who, during a follow-up visit at the Department of Pediatrics at Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical Unive

Tinea blepharo-ciliaris in a 13-year-old girl caused by Trichophyton benhamiae.

Tinea blepharo-ciliaris is a rare form of dermatophyte infection which involves eyelids and associated eyelashes. We report a 13-year-old girl with type I diabetes mellitus who had right eyelid swelling and eyelash loss for two weeks. The lesions were presented as erythematous patches with scales and tiny pustules on the right upper and lower eyelids with broken eyelashes. Two additional annular erythematous patches with scaly active borders were found on her right forearm and right thigh. Microscopic examination of broken eyelashes demonstrated many chains of arthroconidia and hyaline hyphae

An unusual complication of perforating wounds of the eye.

In two patients, after a perforating wound of the eye, a cilium was found in the vitreous. In the first patient one end of a cilium was stuck in the retina, the other end floated freely in the vitreous of the right eye. During a 5-year follow-up no inflammatory signs were observed. Visual acuity remained 1.0. In the second patient a large metal foreign body was removed from the vitreous of the left eye immediately after the injury. A week later, while parsplana vitrectomy was being performed for a vitreous haemorrhage caused by the trauma, an eyelash was discovered in the vitreous, but it coul

[Chronic blepharitis caused by mite Demodex folliculorum].

Two cases of the very long term observation and clinical findings of chronic blepharitis caused by mite Demodex folliculorum are presented. Both patients were treated for over ten years for inflammation of the margin of the eyelid with antibiotics and steroids administered locally. A significant thickening of the blood vessels in the eyelid and numerous cylindrical cuffs of dry discharge around the base of the eyelashes persuaded us to carry out microbiological tests on the suspect eyelashes. In both cases we received additional test results from the epilated eyelashes. Demodex folliculorum sh

The falsies effect: How this beauty trend falsely induces severe glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To bring awareness on how the false eyelash beauty trend can impact routine glaucoma evaluations. OBSERVATION: False eyelashes have the ability to induce pseudoptosis and visual disturbance complaints from patients. This translates to the patient care setting by inhibiting proper administration of Humphrey Visual Field analysis and portraying gross overestimations on patients' glaucoma progression. CONCLUSIONS: Patients should be asked to remove false eyelashes prior to administering Humphrey Visual Field analysis or have their eyelids taped up to prevent obstruction of view during

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis in healthy and immunocompromised patients.

PURPOSE: To examine the proportion of Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis in the eyelashes of healthy and immunocompromised patients. METHODS: Eyelashes were taken from 95 patients at the Pomeranian Medical University, Clinic of Haematology, and from 1091 healthy controls. RESULTS: Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis were found in 22.9% of controls and in 20% of immunocompromised patients. In neither the control group nor the immunocompromised patients did we observe a correlation between the proportion of symptoms of blepharitis and the presence of Demodex spp. - symptoms including burning se

Cosmetic product migration onto the ocular surface: exacerbation of migration after eyedrop instillation.

PURPOSE: Cosmetic product application may be an etiologic risk factor for dry eye syndrome. This study aimed to investigate whether a cosmetic product material (CPM) could migrate onto the ocular surface and whether eyedrop instillation might exacerbate this migration. METHODS: CPM was prepared by mixing equal volumes of hydroxyethyl cellulose gel (Scopisol; Senju Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., Osaka, Japan) and a 10% fluorescein solution. Seventy-five female volunteers were randomly separated into three groups: the outer eyelash line group, in which CPM was applied on the upper and lower eyelids a

Eyelid changes in long-standing leprosy.

To describe eyelid changes in ocular leprosy, 74 patients (148 eyes or 296 eyelids) were examined, focusing on eyelid abnormalities. The adnexal examination included evaluation of the upper eyelid crease pattern, qualitative assessment of the orbicularis oculi muscle function, measurement of the distance between the corneal reflex and the upper eyelid margin (margin reflex distance), and slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the eyelashes and tarsal conjunctiva. Eyelash ptosis was a common finding associated with a multiple upper eyelid crease pattern and trichiasis. In the past, eyelash ptosis has proba

Acquired trichomegaly in uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Various mediators inducing positive effects on eyelash growth (trichomegaly) have been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of ocular inflammation. Based on our clinical observations, we examined the relation between trichomegaly and uveitis. METHODS: The study was conducted as a prospective case-control study at Gulhane Military Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology. Ninety patients with endogenous uveitis and 360 age- and sex-matched control subjects (11 to 59 years of age) enrolled in the study. Upper and lower eyelash lengths measured by 2 different observers using Ca

[Trichomegaly in HIV infection].

Hypertrichosis of the eyelashes was first described as "trichomegaly" in the setting of rare congenital syndromes. Recently numerous cases of acquired trichomegaly of the eyelashes have been described, especially in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus type I infection. The pathomechanisms leading to acquired trichomegaly remain largely unknown. Direct effects of the virus on the hair follicle, immune dysregulation, and a multifactorial pathogenesis are discussed. We report a case of acquired trichomegaly in advanced HIV-I infection in order to present this unusual clinical find

[Chronic blepharitis and Demodex].

PURPOSE: Demodex is a mite commonly found in eyelash hair follicles and sebaceous glands of healthy people. Due to the fact this mite has also been reported in many chronic cases of blepharitis, we aimed to investigate the incidence of infestation with this mite in healthy people and in patients with chronic blepharitis, in addition to evaluating the response to the different treatments used for blepharitis. METHODS: 105 subjects without blepharitis were selected as a control group and 20 subjects diagnosed as having chronic blepharitis were selected as patients. Epilated eyelashes were obser

Treatment of Phthiriasis Palpebrarum and Crab Louse: Petrolatum Jelly and 1% Permethrin Shampoo.

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is an uncommon cause of blepharoconjunctivitis in which Pthirus pubis infest the eyelashes. We report a case of unilateral phthiriasis palpebrarum with crab louse. A 45-year-old man presented with conjunctival hyperaemia and moderate itching associated with irritation, and crusty excretions of the eyelashes in the left eye. Careful slit-lamp examination revealed many lice and nits in left eye and mild conjunctival hyperaemia. No abnormality was found in the right eye. On dermatologic examination, only one louse was found at the pubic area. The patient was treated effect
