[Hemorrhagic vascular lesions in facial injuries treated by intravascular embolization: report of two cases].

We have encountered 2 cases of hemorrhagic vascular lesion in the external carotid artery system caused by facial injury. In case 1, treatment of epistaxis by nasal packing was unsuccessful. Good result was obtained by intravascular embolization in the internal maxillary artery using polyvinyl alcohol particles and gelatin sponge pieces. In case 2, massive subgaleal hemorrhage due to tearing of the middle meningeal artery caused by a skull base fracture appeared following surgery for open skull fracture. Hemostasis was performed successfully by intravascular embolization in the middle meningea

Exploring risk groups for concomitant injuries in facial fracture patients: a data-driven analysis.

PURPOSE: Patients with facial fractures are a diverse group with varying injury mechanisms and extent of injury. These patients often suffer from concomitant injuries (CIs) of different severity outside the facial region, some of which are life-threatening and may require urgent care. Therefore, early identification of patients at risk for CI is important. This study aimed to investigate exploratory risk groups for concomitant injuries in patients with facial fractures, focusing on the impact of injury energy, sex and age on the prevalence and type of concomitant injury. METHODS: In this retr

[Repair and reconstruction of facial organ injuries: a perfect fit of structure and function].

The repair of facial organ injuries is a complex field in plastic surgery that involves both functional recovery and morphological reconstruction. The therapeutic goal has evolved from traditional wound closure to the harmonious integration of form and function. To achieve this new objective, surgical plans need to combine various flap techniques, autologous and allogeneic tissue transplantation approaches, and incorporate emerging methods such as digital design and biomaterials. Although the repair outcomes of facial organ injuries have improved compared to the past, challenges remain, includ

A National Multi-Center Analysis of the Epidemiology of Pediatric Facial Injuries From Fireworks.

Firework injuries remain a significant public health concern, with an estimated 9700 injuries reported in 2023. This study examines trends in pediatric facial injuries from fireworks over the past decade using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. Pediatric cases from 2014 to 2023 were identified using the fireworks consumer code (1313) and filtered for facial injuries (body part code 76). Data was analyzed using chi-square tests to assess significance and logistic regression to evaluate trends. An estimated 4625 pediatric facial injuries from fireworks presented to emergency dep

Oral and maxillo-facial injuries in victims of political repression during the Chilean dictatorship.

INTRODUCTION: Chile was under a civil-military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. During that time, systematic violations to human rights were perpetrated. Oral and maxillo-facial trauma was not an exception, and such trauma was carried out through different methods of torture or ill treatment by agents of the State. Currently, Chile has laws and programs in the public healthcare system to carry out the re-habilitation and reparation process in victims, and the registration of the suffered injuries is considered an important part of these med-ico-legal procedures. The aim of this study is to desc

Among Patients With Facial Fractures, Geriatric Patients Have an Increased Risk for Associated Injuries.

PURPOSE: It is hypothesized that facial trauma-associated injuries (AIs) are more frequent and severe in elderly than in younger adult patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence of, reasons for, and severity of AI in geriatric facial fractures and to compare the differences between geriatric and younger adult patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two patient cohorts were included in this cross-sectional retrospective study. Geriatric patients were at least 65 years old (n = 117) and younger controls were 20 to 50 years old (n = 136). The main predictor was age, the primary

Long-term subjective and objective outcome after primary repair of traumatic facial nerve injuries.

Although traumatic facial nerve paralysis is a severe handicap, there are no follow-up studies evaluating outcome after primary repair of traumatic facial nerve injuries. From May 1988 to August 2005, 27 patients (mean age, 27 years) were operated for traumatic facial nerve lesions (mean number of affected branches, 2.2). End-to-end facial nerve repair was always performed. All patients were invited to our outpatient clinic for standardized questionnaires (Facial Disability Index, Short Form-36 Health Survey), physical examination (Sunnybrook Facial Grading System), and clinical photographs. The role of the military dental surgeon in treating facial injuries: a case report.

This article describes the circumstances surrounding an intense, constant pain in the temporal region (visual analog scale 9-10) experienced by a 22-year-old combat officer in the Israel Defense Forces following a mild facial injury. The officer's wound included penetration of shrapnel particles into the facial skin, causing severe pain. Evaluations performed by a general surgeon, neurologist, psychiatrist, and otorhinolaryngologist did not reveal the source of this pain. Finally, a dental examination revealed that shrapnel had penetrated into the intraoral buccal mucosa near the right upper f

Management and complications of middle- and upper-third facial compound injuries: an Iranian experience.

Surgery for 772 patients with middle- or upper-third facial injuries was carried out between 1984 and 1990 in two university hospitals in Tehran. The most common etiological factor was firearm injuries (69.04%; n = 533), followed by road traffic accidents (24.44%; n = 189). The most common associated nonfacial injuries were head injuries (36.97%; n = 285 followed by ocular injuries (23.18%; n = 179). Treatment of middle- or upper-third facial injuries ranged from minor repair to major surgery with autogenous or allogenous grafts. The complications associated with middle- or upper-third facial

Silver nitrate injury in the rat sciatic nerve: a model of facial nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: An unpublished communication of a permanent facial paralysis secondary to silver nitrate application in a postoperative mastoid cavity with a dehiscent facial nerve raises concern regarding its neurotoxicity. This study was performed to examine functional neural injury and the morphology of nerve injury due to silver nitrate contact with a peripheral motor nerve. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley male rats were assigned to a sham surgery group or to a group where silver nitrate was applied directly to a surgically exposed sciatic nerve for 1, 5, or 10 seconds. Individual walking track data

Expression and Role of Toll-like Receptors in Facial Nerve Regeneration after Facial Nerve Injury.

Facial nerve palsy directly impacts the quality of life, with patients with facial nerve palsy showing increased rates of depression and limitations in social activities. Although facial nerve palsy is not life-threatening, it can devastate the emotional and social lives of affected individuals. Hence, improving the prognosis of patients with this condition is of vital importance. The prognosis of patients with facial nerve palsy is determined by the cause of the disease, the degree of damage, and the treatment provided. The facial nerve can be easily damaged by middle ear and temporal bone su

Non-suicidal self-injury and emotion regulation: a review on facial emotion recognition and facial mimicry.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an increasingly prevalent, clinically significant behavior in adolescents and can be associated with serious consequences for the afflicted person. Emotion regulation is considered its most frequent function. Because the symptoms of NSSI are common and cause impairment, it will be included in Section 3 disorders as a new disorder in the revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). So far, research has been conducted mostly with patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) showing self-injurious behavior. Therefore, for this re
