Drug abuse and responsible fathering: a comparative study of men enrolled in methadone maintenance treatment.

AIM: Because very little is known about the parenting of drug-abusing men, this study was designed to document ways that drug abuse contributes to compromise of responsible fathering. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS: Generalized linear models and data representing different dimensions of responsible fathering were used to clarify ways that the fathering of 106 men receiving methadone maintenance treatment differed from that of 118 men living in the same community with no history of alcohol or drug abuse. MEASUREMENT: Men who enrolled in the study completed two structured interviews and a batte

Marital Hostility, Hostile Parenting, and Child Aggression: Associations from Toddlerhood to School Age.

OBJECTIVE: The spillover hypothesis suggests that childhood aggression results from spillover of interparental conflict to poor parenting, which promotes aggressive child behavior. This study was designed to examine the spillover hypothesis in non-genetically related parent-child dyads from the toddler period through age 6 years. METHOD: A sample of 361 sets of children, adoptive parents, and birth parents from the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS) was assessed from child age 9 months to 6 years on measures of adoptive parent financial strain, antisocial traits, marital hostility, hos

Satisfaction With Health Care in Families Following a Diagnosis of Cleft Lip and/or Palate in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVE: Having a child born with a cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) poses several challenges for new parents and can have a significant psychological impact on the family as a whole. Previous research has indicated that dissatisfaction with health care is a risk factor for poor parental adjustment and family functioning. Yet, knowledge is lacking in regard to which aspects of care parents may be dissatisfied with. The current study aimed to comprehensively evaluate health-care satisfaction in families following a diagnosis of CL/P by utilizing data collected from a UK-wide birth cohort. METH

A case-control study of maternal knowledge of malnutrition and health-care-seeking attitudes in rural South India.

INTRODUCTION: In India, approximately 20 percent of children under the age of four suffer from severe malnutrition, while half of all the children suffer from undernutrition. The contributions of knowledge and attitudes of nutrition-conscious behaviors of the mothers to childhood malnutrition has been unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore maternal knowledge of the causes of malnutrition, health-care-seeking attitudes and socioeconomic risk factors in relation to children's nutritional status in rural south India. METHODS: A case-controlled study was conducted in a rural area in Ta

Maternal- versus paternal-perpetrated maltreatment and risk for sexual and peer bullying revictimization in young women with depression.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is one of the strongest predictors of sexual and peer bullying re-victimization. However, it is not clear which types of maltreatment are associated with the greatest risk. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the differential relations of maternal- versus paternal-perpetrated emotional maltreatment, neglect, and physical maltreatment, as well as sexual maltreatment, to sexual victimization and peer bullying victimization outside the home. It was hypothesized that paternal-perpetrated emotional maltreatment would be the strongest predictor of later sexual a

Vulnerability or resilience to early substance use among adolescents at risk: The roles of maltreatment and father involvement.

Although research has indicated that maltreated children are at higher risk of adolescent substance use, it remains unclear whether the type and timing of maltreatment affect the likelihood of adolescent substance use. Research has also found father involvement to be a potential protective factor against adolescent substance use, but the role of quality vs. quantity of father involvement as well as gender differences in the effects of father involvement on substance use among at-risk adolescents have not been studied. The current study adds value to the existing literature by filling these gap

Relationship Transitions and the Risk for Child Maltreatment.

Family structure as a risk for child maltreatment has long been viewed as a static state in the child maltreatment literature. Drawing on data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, the author uses a series of individual fixed-effects models to investigate whether particular types of relationship transitions over children's first decade of life are associated with increased risk for maternal and paternal child abuse and maternal neglect. Findings question and confirm a number of long-standing theoretical and empirical findings from the child maltreatment literature. Results indic

The effect of divorce on fathers: an overview of the literature.

Divorce is becoming a major mental health problem in the United States. With rare exception psychological attention has usually focused on the effect of divorce on children and mothers. The author suggests that as some fathers become more involved in family nurturing they will be more intensely affected by marital disruption, particularly as it involves changes in the relationship to their children. A review of the recent psychological literature on divorce and custody is presented as a framework for understanding the divorcing father who is requesting psychiatric help.

Prenatal and early postnatal depression and child maltreatment among Japanese fathers.

We investigated the association of paternal depression in the prenatal and early postnatal period with child maltreatment tendency at two months postpartum among Japanese fathers. This population-based longitudinal study recruited Japanese perinatal women and their partners living in Nishio City, Aichi, Japan. Of the 270 fathers who participated, 196 were included in the analysis. All data were collected via self-administrated questionnaires at four time points: 20 weeks' gestation and in the first few days, one month, and two months postpartum. Paternal depression was assessed using the Edinb

Psychosocial functioning in children with a congenital heart disease: attachment and emotion regulation strategies of children and parents as explanatory factors.

INTRODUCTION: Children born with congenital heart disease (CHD) face increased risk of psychosocial difficulties. These may stem from challenges in parent-child relationships and related emotion regulation (ER) processes. This study examined whether insecure attachment and maladaptive parental emotion regulation strategies (ERS) are associated with psychological functioning in children with CHD. We also investigated whether these effects are associated through pathways involving children's own ER. METHODS: In a sample of 218 families, with children between the ages 8 and 18 and their parents,

Quality of life in childhood, adolescence and adult food allergy: Patient and parent perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Studies of children with food allergy typically only include the mother and have not investigated the relationship between the amount of allergen needed to elicit a clinical reaction (threshold) and health-related quality of life (HRQL). Our aims were (i) to compare self-reported and parent-reported HRQL in different age groups, (ii) to evaluate the impact of severity of allergic reaction and threshold on HRQL, and (iii) to investigate factors associated with patient-reported and parent-reported HRQL. METHODS: Age-appropriate Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaires (FAQLQ) wer

The right to know your genetic parents: from open-identity gamete donation to routine paternity testing.

Over the years a number of countries have abolished anonymous gamete donation and shifted toward open-identity policies. Donor-conceived children are said to have a fundamental "right to know" the identity of their donor. In this article, we trace the arguments that underlie this claim and question its implications. We argue that, given the status attributed to the right to know one's gamete donor, it would be discriminatory not to extend this right to naturally conceived children with misattributed paternity. One way to facilitate this would be through routine paternity testing at birth. Whil

Parents' mental health after the birth of an extremely preterm child: a comparison between bereaved and non-bereaved parents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of extremely preterm birth (24-26 weeks of gestation) on the mental health of parents two to six years after delivery, and to examine potential differences in post-traumatic growth between parents whose newborn infant died and those whose child survived. METHOD: A total of 54 parents who had lost their newborn and 38 parents whose preterm child survived were assessed by questionnaires with regard to depression and anxiety (HADS) and post-traumatic growth (PTGI). RESULTS: Neither group of parents had clinically relevant levels of depression and anxiety. Mothers

Adverse childhood experiences lead to trans-generational transmission of early maladaptive schemas.

BACKGROUND: According to schema theory, early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are formed due to unsatisfied core emotional needs in childhood. However, there is limited research about the association between parent's EMS and the child's EMS. OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the mechanisms underlying the relationship between the parent's disconnection and rejection schemas and the child's disconnection and rejection schemas. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: One hundred seventy-nine mother-late adolescent dyads participated in the study. Mothers filled out the forms at home, and adolescents compl

Experience of physical abuse in childhood and perpetration of physical punishment and violence in adulthood amongst fathers: findings from the Pacific Islands Families Study.

BACKGROUND: Family violence is a serious and increasingly significant public health issue, both in New Zealand and internationally. While Pacific families in New Zealand experience disproportionately higher rates of violence compared to their Palagi counterparts, little epidemiological information exists about the effect of childhood abuse on Pacific fathers and whether it increases their proclivity on perpetrating violence. AIMS: To determine the prevalence of physical discipline administered to young Pacific children by their fathers and physical intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrated

Female transsexualism--a child and adolescent perspective.

A brief review of the literature on female transsexualism illustrates the paucity of dynamically oriented explanations. The author presents information from eight child and adolescent cases in which the need to change sex appears related to a need to protect mother and herself from a violent or threatening father.

Cytophilic immunoglobulin G binding on neutrophils from a child with malignant osteopetrosis who developed fatal acute respiratory distress mimicking transfusion-related acute lung injury.

A 16-month-old boy, diagnosed at age 3 months with osteopetrosis, was treated since age 6 months with rhIFN-gamma in combination with rhM-CSF. The child developed acute respiratory distress within 1 hr of a paternal platelet transfusion. Both the child and the father were blood group type O, and platelets were collected the previous day from the father. Chest X-ray revealed right pulmonary consolidation and a complete "whiteout" on the left. By 24 hr, the lungs had the appearance of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Over the course of the next 11 days, the child remained intubated an

Maternal and parental anxiety levels before and after the child's seroconversion to islet autoimmunity.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate parental type 1 diabetes-related anxiety in response to genetic screening at birth and islet autoantibody test results in at-risk children participating in the prevention study Primary Oral Insulin Trial (POInT). METHODS: Children were screened at birth for genetic risk for type 1 diabetes and enrolled between 4-7 months of age in the POInT study. Parental anxiety regarding their child's risk of type 1 diabetes was measured by the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) at 8-11, 18, and 36 months of age. Blood samples were analyzed for islet autoantibodies at each visit and
