Selected Lipidome Components and Their Association with Perinatal Depression.

Background/Objectives: Perinatal depression affects approximately 21% of pregnant women and 15% postpartum, significantly impacting both maternal and child health. Lipid metabolism alterations, particularly involving fatty acids and lecithin, have been associated with mood disorders during the perinatal period. Omega-3 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) play a key role in mood regulation and neuroinflammatory processes, while lecithin significantly influences neurotransmitter synthesis. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar for relevant articles whi

[Diet in pathogenesis of acne vulgaris].

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common dermatologic condition especially among adolescents. Acne is related to excess sebum production by sebaceous glands, inflammation both within and adjacent to the comedones, hyperproliferation of Propionibacterium acnes. Some of investigations show association between acne and diet. Milk increases the level of IGF-1 leading to the synthesis of androgen-mediated increases sebum production. Chocolate predispose to hyperglycemia and insulinemia which aggravate of acne vulgaris. High levels of omega-6 fatty acids have been associated with increase of acne in

Omega-3 PUFAs Lower the Propensity for Arachidonic Acid Cascade Overreactions.

A productive view of the benefits from omega-3 (n-3) nutrients is that the dietary essential omega-6 (n-6) linoleic acid has a very narrow therapeutic window which is widened by n-3 nutrients. The benefit from moderate physiological actions of the arachidonic acid cascade can easily shift to harm from excessive pathophysiological actions. Recognizing the factors that predispose the cascade to an unwanted overactivity gives a rational approach for arranging beneficial interactions between the n-3 and n-6 essential nutrients that are initial components of the cascade. Much detailed evidence for

Fatigue reduction diet in breast cancer survivors: a pilot randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Fatigue is a prevalent and burdensome effect of breast cancer. Fatigue has been linked to chronic inflammation, and diets high in antioxidant nutrients have been associated with lesser prevalence and severity of fatigue. Studies are needed, however, to test if antioxidant-rich diets could improve fatigue. METHODS: Pilot, randomized, trial conducted between January 2014 and April 2015, to investigate if a 3-month diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods, named the fatigue reduction diet (FRD), improved fatigue and sleep compared to an attention c

Short-term menhaden oil rich diet changes renal lipid profile in acute kidney injury.

Weanling male Wistar rats fed a choline-deficient diet develop acute kidney injury. Menhaden oil, which is a very important source of omega-3 fatty acids, has a notorious protective effect. The mechanism of this protection is unknown; one possibility could be that menhaden oil changes renal lipid profile, with an impact on the functions of biological membranes. The aim of this work was to study the renal lipid profile in rats fed a choline-deficient diet with menhaden oil or vegetable oil as lipids. Rats were divided into 4 groups and fed four different diets for 7 days: choline-deficient or c

Biochemical and scanning electron microscope study of lipids chloroform-methanol extracted from unerupted and erupted human tooth enamel.

Almost twice as much fatty acid was extracted without demineralization from the mature enamel of erupted teeth treated with 2:1 chloroform-methanol as from the enamel of unerupted teeth (32.64 micrograms/g versus 15.60 micrograms/g). Palmitic C16:0, stearic C18:0, oleic C18:1 omega 9 and linoleic acids C18:2 omega 6 were the chief fatty acids detected by gas-liquid chromatography. The percentage of free fatty acids and diglycerides was larger in unerupted than erupted teeth, whereas that of triglycerides, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine was larger in erupted teeth. These chang

Women and omega-3 Fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3 FA) are constituents of the membranes of all cells in the body and are precursors of locally produced hormones, eicosanoids, which are important in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, especially in women. Omega-3 FA are of interest in some of the most common conditions affecting women. One mechanism underlying dysmenorrhea is a disturbed balance between antiinflammatory, vasodilator eicosanoids derived from omega-3 FA and proinflammatory, vasoconstrictor eicosanoids derived from omega-6 FA. Increased intake of omega-3 FA can reverse the symptoms in th

Eicosapentaenoic Acid Influences the Lipid Profile of an In Vitro Psoriatic Skin Model Produced with T Cells.

Psoriasis is a skin disease characterized by epidermal hyperplasia and an inappropriate activation of the adaptive immunity. A dysregulation of the skin's lipid mediators is reported in the disease with a predominance of the inflammatory cascade derived from n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6 PUFAs). Bioactive lipid mediators derived from arachidonic acid (AA) are involved in the inflammatory functions of T cells in psoriasis, whereas n-3 PUFAs' derivatives are anti-inflammatory metabolites. Here, we sought to evaluate the influence of a supplementation of the culture media with eicosapentae

Liver microsomal membrane fluidity and lipid characteristics in vitamin A-deficient rats.

Rat liver microsomes (microsomal fraction) were isolated from vitamin A-deficient and -sufficient rats and analysed for membrane lipid characteristics. Membrane fluidity was found to be significantly decreased in microsomes from the vitamin A-deficient rats, but not in liposomes prepared from lipid extracts. Microsomes from vitamin A-deficient animals showed a significant decrease in C18:2, omega 6 and an increase in C22:5, omega 6 fatty acids.

When fish fails to protect: interrogating the South Asian cardiometabolic paradox in the era of aquaculture transition.

South Asia presents a striking nutritional paradox: populations among the world's highest fish consumers carry disproportionate cardiometabolic risk at BMI levels well below disease thresholds for European populations. Marine fish is established as cardioprotective in fatty-fish-consuming coastal populations, yet this benefit appears to break down in South Asian contexts. This commentary interrogates four interlocking mechanisms. First, aquaculture-driven species substitution has replaced n-3-rich species such as hilsa and coastal sardines with leaner farmed varieties offering only a fraction

Epigenetics in Multiple Sclerosis: Molecular Mechanisms and Dietary Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, neurodegenerative demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Unfortunately, MS causes important disability in young adults and its prevalence is increasing. While the etiology of MS etiology is not completely understood, it seems to be a multifactorial entity that is influenced by both genetic and epigenetic modifications. Epigenetic mechanisms add or remove different chemical groups for the activation or inhibition of gene expression to block the production of proinflammatory proteins. It is truly important to i

Association of dietary fatty acids with longitudinal change in plasma-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Elevated intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is linked to a reduced risk of dementia in some prospective studies. However, few studies have examined the relationship between nutrient intake and plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease. OBJECTIVES: We explored whether omega-3, omega-6, and monounsaturated fat intakes were associated with changes in plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease over time. DESIGN: The Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project is a prospective cohort study (1994-2021); the data set used here includes a mean follow-up of 7.0 years. SETTIN

Fatty acid desaturase activities and polyunsaturated fatty acid composition in human liver between the seventeenth and thirty-sixth gestational weeks.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to characterize n-3 and n-6 fatty acid delta5- and delta6-desaturase activities and their time course variations in human fetal liver between the 17th and 36th gestational week. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one biologic samples were obtained after legally approved medical abortion, according to French law. The desaturase activities were measured in the 21 liver samples by a radiochemical method by means of reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The fatty acid composition (percentage by weight) of liver phospholipids was assessed in 16 samples by gas-

Effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids on gastric cancer immunity and immunotherapy.

Although immunotherapy has been predominant for advanced gastric cancer treatment, it still has limitations. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are associated with inflammation while their roles in tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) are unclear. This study explores PUFAs' impacts on gastric cancer immunity and immunotherapy efficacy. Bioinformatics analysis was conducted to identify differential expressions of PUFAs metabolic genes and their immune correlations. Clinical data of advanced gastric cancer patients receiving immunotherapy at Zhongda Hospital (2020-2024), whose serum PUFAs were

Heterogeneous Causes of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Correlate With Distinct Peripheral Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Metabolites.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a heterogeneous syndrome of hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to dysregulated pulmonary inflammation, is caused by diverse insults. This heterogeneity presents challenges for mechanistic and therapeutic research, as evidenced by conflicting results from trials of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation for ARDS. PUFAs and downstream oxylipins are important to pulmonary inflammation but are not well defined in ARDS. We hypothesized that differences in fatty acid metabolism, as measured by levels of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs and oxylipins, ar

Barn swallows and purple martins convert precursors to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids: implications for conservation of riparian- vs inland-nesting habitats.

For aerial insectivorous birds, whose populations have declined significantly in North America, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) that are more abundant in aquatic-emergent insects than terrestrial insects, are important for the development, somatic growth, and health of young birds. Some bird species, however, can convert shorter chain PUFA that occur abundantly in terrestrial insects into LC-PUFA. Our study aimed to evaluate the ability of two aerial insectivore species to synthesize their own LC-PUFA. We hypothesized that terrestrially associated aerial insectivores rely on h
