Even though fecal incontinence (FI) in children is most commonly the result of functional constipation, there are organic conditions that can be associated with incontinence. FI has a major impact on the quality of life of those children who experience it. The general objectives of any bowel program are to achieve predictability and independence. This is achieved by manipulating colonic transit and stool consistency and by producing more controlled evacuations, usually with the use of rectal interventions. Dietary interventions and medications can be used to change stool consistency or to mani

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to discuss the effect of pelvic floor muscle training on fecal incontinence.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on patients who received pelvic floor muscle training from March 2002 to April 2007. There were 55 patients with fecal incontinence (male, 32 cases; female, 23 cases; mean age, 9.4 years old from 6 to 14), including 39 cases of anorectal malformation and 16 cases of Hirschsprung's disease. Pelvic floor muscle training was performed using biofeedback for 2 weeks in hospital, 2 times each day, and 30 minutes each time. The patients wer

Fecal incontinence presents a major challenge in the comprehensive nursing care of acutely and critically ill patients. When manifested as diarrhea, the effects of fecal incontinence can range from mild (superficial skin irritation) to profound (severe perineal dermatitis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and sepsis). Fecal incontinence has many etiologies and risk factors. These include damage to the anal sphincter or pelvic floor, liquid stool consistency, abnormal colonic transport, and decreased intestinal capacity. To avoid or minimize complications, the cause of diarrhea should be add

In this article, the author presents an overview of normal skin and a description of perineal skin injury. The focus is to identify the goals for treatment for persons with frequent diarrhea or fecal incontinence as it relates to their perineal skin care. Specific algorithms for acute care and ambulatory settings are defined, and two case studies are presented. The treatment goals include evaluation of and recommendations for reviewing and choosing perineal skin products.

PURPOSE: Abnormalities of rectoanal inhibitory or excitatory reflex in patients with fecal incontinence are well described. A spectrum of abnormal responses, other than those already described in the literature, has been observed in some patients with fecal incontinence and forms the subject of this report.
METHOD: Forty-three patients with idiopathic or traumatic fecal incontinence were studied to evaluate their reflex responses to balloon distention of the rectum, and results were compared with reflex responses of 29 control subjects with no anorectal complaints.
RESULTS: Control subjects

Six cases of gracilis muscle transplant for fecal incontinence are reported. The causes of fecal incontinence included previous anal operation, idiopathic incontinence, and rectal prolapse. All patients had had a previous operation for fecal incontinence. Postoperative sepsis developed at the operative site in five patients despite a defunctioning colostomy in two. Functional results of the operation were poor in all patients and a colostomy has now been raised in all cases. The operation was not associated with any objective improvement in resting or voluntary component pressure.

Eight patients with fecal incontinence were seen. All eight patients had massive splenomegaly secondary to myelofibrosis and myeloid metaplasia. Six of the eight patients underwent splenectomy for hypersplenism. Five of the six had total improvement of the fecal incontinence. One died two weeks postoperatively and could not be evaluated. In our opinion, the fecal incontinence was related to the splenomegaly. The possible mechanism is discussed. If absolutely necessary for control of fecal incontinence in this situation, splenectomy should be considered.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effect of a run-in period on fecal incontinence (FI) symptom severity.
STUDY DESIGN: This study conducted a planned secondary analysis of the run-in period to a study evaluating the effect of 12-week treatment with percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation versus sham in reducing FI severity in women. All participants completed a 4-week run-in period designed to exclude from randomization women whose symptoms reduced below the eligibility threshold after receiving education on FI and completing bowel diaries. Change in St Mark's (Vaizey) score and week

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a leading cause of infection in adults. The most common cause is gastrointestinal bacteria ascending the urethra into the bladder. Studies showing fecal incontinence (FI) is a risk factor for UTI have been limited to nursing home populations. Healthy patients with recurrent UTI, especially women, often receive counseling, suggesting improper personal hygiene contributes to UTIs. This advice can be stigmatizing. Given UTI prevalence, it is important to elucidate risk factors for improved diagnosis, treatment, and patient education. Our objective

Fecal incontinence is a refractory disease in colorectal surgery. The main clinical manifestation is that patients cannot control the discharge of gas, solid or liquid feces in the rectum autonomously. It is easy to bring shame to patients and seriously affect their physical and mental health. Reducing the frequency of fecal incontinence, restoring anal sphincter function, and improving patient quality of life are important goals for treating fecal incontinence. With the development of medical technology and the improvement of treatment plans for fecal incontinence, patients with fecal inconti

PURPOSE: Rectocele can be associated with both obstructed defecation and fecal incontinence. There exists a great variety of operative techniques to treat patients with rectocele. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome in a consecutive series of patients who underwent transperineal repair of rectocele when presenting with fecal incontinence as the predominant symptom.
METHODS: Twenty-three consecutive patients from April 2000 to July 2015 with symptomatic rectocele underwent transperineal repair by a single surgeon.
RESULTS: All patients had a history of vaginal deliv

BACKGROUND: Assessment of the neurocontrol of the external anal sphincter has long been restricted to investigating patients by invasive tools. Less invasive techniques have been regarded less suitable for diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to develop a surface electromyography-based algorithm to facilitate fecal incontinence diagnosis, and to assess its sensitivity and specificity.
DESIGN: Data analysis from a single center prospective study.
PATIENTS: All patients from colorectal surgery office were considered. They underwent a structured interview, a general physical and proctologic exami

Fecal incontinence (FI) is a physically and psychosocially debilitating disorder which negatively impacts quality of life (QOL). It bears a significant burden not only on patients but also on their families, caretakers as well as society as a whole. Even though it is considered a somewhat common condition, especially as women age, the prevalence is often underestimated due to patients' reluctance to report symptoms or seek care. The evaluation and treatment of FI can be also hindered by lack of understanding of the current management options among healthcare providers and how they impact on QO
