Magnetically Induced Skin Stretch Enhances Proprioceptive Feedback in Prosthetics.

Proprioceptive feedback is essential for motor control and prosthetic embodiment, yet myoelectric prostheses lack naturalistic sensory input. Artificial skin stretch stimulation has emerged as a preferred method to convey proprioceptive cues, but current friction-based devices face limitations preventing integration into practical prostheses. This work investigates magnetically induced skin stretch as a non-invasive, potentially implantable alternative. We present MISS (Magnetically Induced Skin Stretch), a novel system that uses external coils to control magnets adhered to the skin, producing

Heteronymous feedback from quadriceps onto soleus in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest increased excitatory heteronymous feedback from quadriceps onto soleus may contribute to abnormal coactivation of knee and ankle extensors after stroke. However, there is lack of consensus on whether persons post-stroke exhibit altered heteronymous reflexes and, when present, the origin of increased excitation (i.e. increased excitation alone and/or decreased inhibition). This study examined heteronymous excitation and inhibition from quadriceps onto soleus in paretic, nonparetic, and age-matched control limbs to determine whether increased excitation was du

Muscle spindles provide flexible sensory feedback for movement sequences.

Sensory feedback is essential for motor performance and must adapt to task demands. Muscle spindle afferents (MSAs) are a major primary source of feedback about movement, and their responses are readily modulated online by gain-controller fusimotor neurons and other mechanisms. They are therefore a powerful site for implementing flexible sensorimotor control. We recorded from MSAs innervating the jaw musculature during performance of a directed lick sequence task. Jaw MSAs encoded complex jaw-tongue kinematics. However, kinematic encoding alone accounted for less than half of MSA spiking varia

A sensory-motor hand prosthesis with integrated thermal feedback.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we reported the presence of phantom thermal sensations in amputees: thermal stimulation of specific spots on the residual arm elicited thermal sensations in their missing hands. Here, we exploit phantom thermal sensations via a standalone system integrated into a robotic prosthetic hand to provide real-time and natural temperature feedback. METHODS: The subject (a male adult with unilateral transradial amputation) used the sensorized prosthesis to manipulate objects and distinguish their thermal properties. We tested his ability to discriminate between (1) hot, cold, and

Virtual Inspection System for Pumping Stations with Multimodal Feedback.

Pumping stations have undergone significant modernization and digitalization in recent decades. However, traditional virtual inspections often prioritize the visual experience and fail to effectively represent the haptic physical properties of devices during inspections, resulting in poor immersion and interactivity. This paper presents a novel virtual inspection system for pumping stations, incorporating virtual reality interaction and haptic force feedback technology to enhance immersion and realism. The system leverages a 3D model, crafted in 3Ds Max, to provide immersive visualizations. Mu

PVA/PANI-DBSA Nanomesh Tactile Sensor for Force Feedback.

Touch serves as an important medium for human-environment interaction. The piezoresistive tactile sensor has attracted much attention due to its convenient technology, simple principle, and convenient signal acquisition and analysis. In this paper, conductive beads-on-string polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyaniline doped with dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) nanofibers were fabricated via the electrospinning technique. Due to the special nanostructure of PVA-coated PANI-DBSA, the tactile sensor presented a wide measuring range of 12 Pa-121 kPa and appreciable sensitivity of 8.576 kPa-1 at

An adenosinergic positive feedback loop extends pharmacological cardioprotection duration.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adenosine receptor activation induces delayed, sustained cardioprotection against ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury (24-72 h), but the mechanisms underlying extended cardioprotection duration remain unresolved. We hypothesized that a positive feedback loop involving adenosine receptor-induced proteasomal degradation of adenosine kinase (ADK) and decreased myocardial adenosine metabolism extends the duration of cardioprotection. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Mice were administered an ADK inhibitor, ABT-702, to induce endogenous adenosine signalling. Cardiac ADK protein and mRN

Task-dependent pitch auditory feedback control in cerebellar ataxia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate how ataxia affects the task-dependent role of pitch auditory feedback control in speech. In previous research, individuals with ataxia produced over-corrected, hypermetric compensatory responses to unexpected pitch and formant frequency perturbations in auditory feedback in sustained vowels and single words (Houde et al., 2019; Li et al., 2019; Parrell et al., 2017). In this study, we investigated whether ataxia would also affect the task-dependent role of the auditory feedback control system, measuring whether pitch-shift responses would b

Developing improved outcome measures in FXS: Key stakeholder feedback.

BACKGROUND: There is a critical need for the development of improved outcome measures in Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). Because the majority of respondents of behavior outcome measures are caregivers or individuals with FXS, it is important to consider stakeholders' firsthand experiences when designing a caregiver- or self-report measure. AIMS: The current research study aimed to understand experiences of completing commonly used caregiver-/self-report measures of behavior in FXS via focus groups. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This study employed a focus group methodology. Semi-structured focus groups

Sensory weighting of position and force feedback during pinching.

Human hands are complex biomechanical systems that allow for dexterous tasks with many degrees of freedom. Coordination of the fingers is essential for many activities of daily living and involves integrating sensory signals. During this sensory integration, the central nervous system deals with the uncertainty of sensory signals. When handling compliant objects, force and position are related. Interactions with stiff objects result in reduced position changes and increased force changes compared to compliant objects. Literature has shown sensory integration of force and position at the should

Yoga Pose Estimation and Feedback Generation Using Deep Learning.

Yoga is a 5000-year-old practice developed in ancient India by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization. The word yoga means deep association and union of mind with the body. It is used to keep both mind and body in equilibration in all flip-flops of life by means of asana, meditation, and several other techniques. Nowadays, yoga has gained worldwide attention due to increased stress levels in the modern lifestyle, and there are numerous methods or resources for learning yoga. Yoga can be practiced in yoga centers, through personal tutors, and can also be learned on one's own with the help of the Inte

Measured Wound Outcome Feedback Improves Surgical Site Infection Rates.

Feedback supports learning. No matter how effective medical professionals think they are, evidence of measured patient wound outcomes helps inform their wound care practice, empowering them to improve patient outcomes. Prospective randomized clinical trials (RCTs) proved this principle in relation to healing chronic wounds. Measuring wound healing outcomes and providing caregivers with feedback about the 4-week healing progress increased the percentage of diabetic foot ulcers healed within 20 weeks and venous leg ulcers healed within 24 weeks. Longitudinal research suggests this principle hold

Peer review in team-based learning: influencing feedback literacy.

BACKGROUND: Peer review in Team-based learning (TBL) exists for three key reasons: to promote reflection on individual behaviours; provide opportunities to develop professional skills; and prevent 'free riders' who fail to contribute effectively to team discussions. A well-developed process that engages students is needed. However, evidence suggests it remains a difficult task to effectively incorporate into TBL. The purpose of this study was to assess medical students' ability to provide written feedback to their peers in TBL, and to explore students' perception of the process, using the conc

NFAT indicates nucleocytoplasmic damped oscillation via its feedback modulator.

Cell signaling and the following gene regulation are tightly regulated to keep homeostasis. NF-κB is a famous key transcription factor for inflammatory cell regulations that obtain a closed feedback loop with IκB. Similarly, we show here, NFAT is also tightly regulated via its downstream target, down syndrome critical region (DSCR)-1. In primary cultured endothelium, either shear stress or VEGF treatment revealed quick NFAT1 nuclear localization following the DSCR-1 transactivation, which in turn induced NFAT1 cytoplasm sequestration. Interestingly, both NFAT and DSCR-1 can be competitive subs

Feedback-dependent neuronal properties make focal dystonias so focal.

Focal dystonia, by definition, affects a specific body part; however, it may have a widespread neural substrate. We tested this hypothesis by examining the intrinsic behaviour and the neuronal properties that are modulated by changes in the physiological behaviour of their connections, that is feedback dependence, of the isolated pallidal neurons. During deep brain stimulation surgery in 12 patients with isolated cervical dystonia (without hand involvement), we measured spontaneous as well as evoked single-unit properties in response to fist making (hand movement) or shoulder shrug (neck movem

Preventing presbycusis in mice with enhanced medial olivocochlear feedback.

"Growing old" is the most common cause of hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) (presbycusis) first affects the ability to understand speech in background noise, even when auditory thresholds in quiet are normal. It has been suggested that cochlear denervation ("synaptopathy") is an early contributor to age-related auditory decline. In the present work, we characterized age-related cochlear synaptic degeneration and hair cell loss in mice with enhanced α9α10 cholinergic nicotinic receptors gating kinetics ("gain of function" nAChRs). These mediate inhibitory olivocochlear feedback thro

Tspan8-β-catenin positive feedback loop promotes melanoma invasion.

Due to its high proclivity to metastasize, and despite the recent development of targeted and immune therapy strategies, melanoma is still the deadliest form of skin cancer. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying melanoma invasion remains crucial. We previously characterized Tspan8 for its ability to prompt melanoma cell detachment from their microenvironment and trigger melanoma cell invasiveness, but the signaling events by which Tspan8 regulates the invasion process still remain unknown. Here, we demonstrated that β-catenin stabilization is a molecular signal subsequen

Temporally Tuned Corticosteroid Feedback Regulation of the Stress Axis.

Activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is tuned by corticosteroid feedback. Corticosteroids regulate cellular function via genomic and nongenomic mechanisms, which operate over diverse time scales. This review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of how corticosteroid feedback regulates hypothalamic stress neuron function and output through synaptic plasticity, changes in intrinsic excitability, and modulation of neuropeptide production. The temporal kinetics of corticosteroid actions in the brain versus the pituitary have important implications for how organisms
