Genomic analysis identifies candidate supergene architecture for host-feeding behavior in wild Aedes aegypti dengue vector mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary arboviral vector globally, and its affinity to feed on human hosts is a key determinant of transmission intensity. Despite the epidemiological importance of anthropophily, the genomic architecture underlying the molecular basis of host-feeding behavior remains understudied. METHODS: Here, we present an integrated genome-wide association study (GWAS) and structural variant analysis of host-feeding behavior in 21 field-collected Ae. aegypti females phenotyped as human-blood-fed (HF; n = 11) or non-human-blood-fed (NHF; n = 10). Feeding Behavior and Plasmodium Detection in Anopheles stephensi, a Malaria Vector in District Khyber, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi is a significant malaria vector in Pakistan, and understanding its feeding behavior is necessary to control the spread of malaria. However, limited information is available on the host preferences of A. stephensi in Pakistan. Therefore, we aimed to explore the feeding behavior of A. stephensi, a malaria vector, in the District Khyber, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. METHODS: A total of 7462 mosquitoes were collected between March and September 2021, with 1674 (22.4%) identified as A. stephensi (952 female and 722 male). Among the female A. stephensi, 495 (52%) we

Effect of dietary inclusion of licuri cake on intake, feeding behavior, and performance of feedlot cull cows.

Licuri cake (LC) is an interesting alternative nutritional component for high-grain diets for ruminants due to its high protein (21.6% CP), fat (12.0% EE), and fiber (62.8% NDF) contents. We investigated the effect of increasing levels of LC inclusion on the intake, digestibility, feeding behavior, performance, and carcass traits of cull cows fed high-grain diets. Forty Zebu cows with an initial weight of 318 ± 38.1 kg, at 105 months of age, were confined in collective stalls and fed (ad libitum) a diet containing 0, 50, 100, or 150 g/kg LC on a diet dry matter (DM) basis. Mosquito blood-feeding patterns and nesting behavior of American crows, an amplifying host of West Nile virus.

BACKGROUND: Although American crows are a key indicator species for West Nile virus (WNV) and mount among the highest viremias reported for any host, the importance of crows in the WNV transmission cycle has been called into question because of their consistent underrepresentation in studies of Culex blood meal sources. Here, we test the hypothesis that this apparent underrepresentation could be due, in part, to underrepresentation of crow nesting habitat from mosquito sampling designs. Specifically, we examine how the likelihood of a crow blood meal changes with distance to and timing of acti

Feeding behavior and activity of Phlebotomus pedifer and potential reservoir hosts of Leishmania aethiopica in southwestern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health concern in Ethiopia. However, knowledge about the complex zoonotic transmission cycle is limited, hampering implementation of control strategies. We explored the feeding behavior and activity of the vector (Phlebotomus pedifer) and studied the role of livestock in CL transmission in southwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: Blood meal origins of engorged sand flies were determined by sequencing host DNA. A host choice experiment was performed to assess the feeding preference of P. pedifer when humans and hyraxes are equally accessible. E

Motility of the Labial Palps in Feeding Behavior and its Innervation in the Marine Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The labial palps of bivalves are thought to be involved in suspension feeding. However, the function of their muscular movements and neural regulation are still unclear. In semi-intact preparations of Mytilus, in which one valve was removed, suspended particles were removed from the labial palps following two kinds of compound movements: torsional and rotational. Both of these compound movements are therefore thought to function in rejection during feeding. These movements were observed in reduced preparations of isolated labial palps with intact cerebral ganglia, and were maintained even afte

Effects of central RVD-hemopressin(α) administration on anxiety, feeding behavior and hypothalamic neuromodulators in the rat.

BACKGROUND: The endocannabinoid (eCB) system is strongly involved in the regulation of anxiety and feeding behavior. RVD-hemopressin(α) [RVD-hp(α)], a N-terminally extended form of hemopressin, is a negative allosteric modulator of the cannabinoid (CB) 1 receptor and a positive allosteric modulator of CB2 receptor which has been recently reported to exert anxiolytic/antidepressant and anorexigenic effects after peripheral administration in rats. Pharmacological evidences reported a possible link between brain hypocretin/orexin, monoamine and eCB systems, as regards appetite and emotional behav

Genetic Determinism of Fearfulness, General Activity and Feeding Behavior in Chickens and Its Relationship with Digestive Efficiency.

The genetic relationships between behavior and digestive efficiency were studied in 860 chickens from a cross between two lines divergently selected on digestive efficiency. At 2 weeks of age each chick was video-recorded in the home pen to characterize general activity and feeding behavior. Tonic immobility and open-field tests were also carried out individually to evaluate emotional reactivity (i.e. the propensity to express fear responses). Digestive efficiency was measured at 3 weeks. Genetic parameters of behavior traits were estimated. Birds were genotyped on 3379 SNP markers to detect Q

Species co-occurrence and feeding behavior in sand fly transmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in western Venezuela.

The structure of the Phlebotomine sand fly community from the Venezuelan Andes was studied using null-model tests. The analyses, at the living zones and altitudes scales, revealed C-scores larger than those expected by random, independently of the collection technique (P < 0.05). These results imply that sand fly species are non-aggregated at both scales. Random results for the variance of C-score and for the favored states hypothesis suggest that sand fly species belong to an unique guild. The latter is reinforced by the fact that anthropophilic and zoophilic species use in the same way a com

Influence of housing conditions on the effects of serotonergic drugs on feeding behavior in non-deprived rats.

Serotonin plays an important role in the regulation of food and water intake, and drugs that inhibit the uptake of this neurotransmitter have been used as appetite suppressors. As the clinical usage of anorectics necessarily involves chronic drug administration, the effects of chronic treatment in animals are likely to be of greater clinical relevance than acute drug effects. Besides, little effort has been made to examine whether these effects interact with stressful situations, such as isolation. We have therefore examined the effects of fluoxetine, a selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitor, and g

Targeted disruption of Huntingtin-associated protein-1 (Hap1) results in postnatal death due to depressed feeding behavior.

HAP-1 is a huntingtin-associated protein that is enriched in the brain. To gain insight into the normal physiological role of HAP-1, mice were generated with homozygous disruption at the Hap1 locus. Loss of HAP-1 expression did not alter the gross brain expression levels of its interacting partners, huntingtin and p150glued. Newborn Hap1(-/-) animals are observed at the expected Mendelian frequency suggesting a non-essential role of HAP-1 during embryogenesis. Postnatally, Hap1(-/-) pups show decreased feeding behavior that ultimately leads to malnutrition, dehydration and premature death. Sev

Effects of 4-hydroxyamphetamine on in vivo brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and feeding behavior in the rat.

The influence of 4-hydroxyamphetamine (4-OHAM) on food and water intake and in vivo brown adipose thermogenesis was examined in two experiments. In Experiment 1, female rats were treated with 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, or 2.00 mg/kg 4-OHAM (ip) prior to assessment of interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) thermogenesis. The 4-OHAM treatment induced dose-dependent activation of IBAT thermogenesis consistent with the enhanced serum levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine observed in 4-OHAM-treated rats immediately after temperature measurement. In Experiment 2, the influence of 4-OHAM on food a

Effects of a Plant-Based Diet During the First Month of Feeding on Alevin Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Development of Tongue Sensory System Regulating Feeding Behavior.

Taste perception is essential for animals to detect nutrients, providing critical dietary information necessary for growth and survival. Since the early growth performance of alevin rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) can be affected by food intake influenced by terrestrial ingredients without fish meal and fish oil, our study aimed to evaluate the role of taste receptors in nutrient detection and the associated signaling pathways leading to central nervous system activation in the regulation of feeding behavior. We conducted a nutritional experiment from the first feeding to 30 days, comparin

The effects of ocean warming and elevated CO2 on the feeding behavior and physiology of two sympatric mesograzers.

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased significantly since pre-industrial times, leading to ocean warming and acidification. These environmental changes affect the physiology of marine organisms as they modify metabolic processes. Despite the critical role of temperature and pH in marine biology, studies of their combined effects are limited. This study investigated the interactive effects of ocean warming and acidification on the feeding behavior and physiology of two sympatric amphipods, Hyale niger and Cymadusa filosa. Using an orthogonal experimental design with two temperatures (27
