Persistent motor and sensory abnormalities after surgery may affect the rehabilitation process. Patients with continued weakness may be perceived as lacking motivation by health care providers. However, there may be an underlying pathophysiologic abnormality preventing patients from progressing through their rehabilitation programs. We report a case of a 20-year-old man who underwent surgical repair of multiple knee structures with the use of a pneumatic tourniquet. Several weeks after surgery, electromyographic evaluation was done because he was having difficulty in his rehabilitation because

In laparoscopic hernia repairs, the staples used to affix prosthetic mesh have resulted in entrapment neuropathies. This paper describes the diagnosis and treatment of nine cases of entrapment neuropathy. Injuries to all the branches of the lumbar plexus, with the exception of the obdurator nerve, have been treated. Generally, the entrapments are self-limiting, but chronic disability requiring surgical intervention can occur. Staple removal and neurolysis controlled the severe, chronic pain of one femoral nerve entrapment. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of these nerves can prevent sta

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). There are many variations in the course of the LFCN. A 55-year-old woman presented with pain and tingling sensations on the anterolateral aspect of her left thigh. Physical examination revealed hypoesthesia of the proximal anterolateral thigh on the left side. During the electrodiagnostic study, sensory nerve action potential of the LFCN could not be obtained on both sides. Through those clinical and electrophysiological findings, we prediagnosed the case as MP and planned to perform diagnosti

Compression of a peripheral nerve or nerve trunk can occur during pregnancy and delivery. The injury may be caused by the fetal head, the application of forceps, trauma or hematoma due to cesarean section, or improper positioning in leg holders. Often, no cause of the injury is found. The most common nerve compression syndromes during pregnancy and delivery are carpal tunnel syndrome, femoral neuropathy, and post partal foot drop. Obturator neuropathy, meralgia paraesthetica, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and syndrome of the rectus abdominis muscle occur less frequently. Symptoms, such as paraesthes

We reviewed 508 consecutive total hip replacements in 370 patients with old developmental dysplasia of the hip, to relate the amount of leg lengthening to the incidence of nerve palsies after operation. There were eight nerve palsies (two femoral, six sciatic), two complete and six incomplete. We found no statistical correlation between the amount of lengthening and the incidence of nerve damage (p = 0.47), but in seven of the eight hips, the surgeon had rated the intervention as difficult because of previous surgery, severe deformity, a defect of the acetabular roof, or considerable flexion d

AIM: To test the incremental value of 3T magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) in a series of unilateral radiculopathy patients with non-contributory magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: Ten subjects (3 men, 7 women; mean age 54 year and range 22-74 year) with unilateral lumbar radiculopathy and with previous non-contributory lumbar spine MRI underwent lumbosacral (LS) plexus MRN over a period of one year. Lumbar spine MRI performed as part of the MRN LS protocol as well as bilateral L4-S1 nerves, sciatic, femoral and lateral femoral cutaneous nerves were evaluated in each subject for ne

Electrodiagnostic testing (EDX) has been the diagnostic tool of choice in peripheral nerve disease for many years, but in recent years, peripheral nerve imaging has been used ever more frequently in daily clinical practice. Nerve ultrasound and magnetic resonance (MR) neurography are able to visualize nerve structures reliably. These techniques can aid in localizing nerve pathology and can reveal significant anatomical abnormalities underlying nerve pathology that may have been otherwise undetected by EDX. As such, nerve ultrasound and MR neurography can significantly improve diagnostic accura

AIMS: We examined whether diabetic neuropathy is associated with altered muscle morphology, strength, and physical performance, and whether muscle characteristics relate to skeletal health.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 123 individuals with type 2 diabetes were classified into +/- neuropathy based on peripheral and autonomic assessments. Tibial muscle morphology and bone microarchitecture were assessed using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography, while dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry assessed appendicular lean mass (ALM/height2) and femoral neck bone mineral d

Diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy is often confused with radiculopathy in the context of spinal degenerative disc disease including spinal stenosis. Accuracy in diagnosis may prevent unnecessary interventional procedures including selective nerve root blocks or epidural steroid injections or even surgery in selected cases. Our patient with known diabetes and lumbar disc disease presented with acute onset of pain in L5-S1 distribution of the left lower extremity. Initial MR imaging of the lumbar spine did not show sufficient structural changes to explain her symptomatology. An MR n

Meralgia paraesthetica (MP) is the consequence of an entrapment or stretch injury of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve at the crossing region with the inguinal ligament where the nerve exits the pelvis. It results in temporary or permanent sensory loss, paraesthesia and pain in the anterolateral region of the thigh. Idiopathic forms are known for example as seat belt syndrome or jeans syndrome. An MP can also occur as a complication of surgical or intensive care patient positioning. In focus are the lithotomy position, prone position and beach chair position. We analyzed 21 complaints about M

Meralgia paresthetica is a non-life-threatening neurological disorder characterized by numbness, tingling, and burning pain over the anterolateral thigh due to impingement of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. This disorder has been seen in patients with diabetes mellitus and obesity, but has also been observed in patients after procedures such as posterior spine surgery, iliac crest bone grafts, lumbar disk surgery, hernia repair, appendectomies, and pelvic osteotomies that ultimately lead to compression or damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Overall, permanent sequelae of meralg

Meralgia paresthetica is a neurological disorder caused by a neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Its aetiology can be spontaneous or iatrogenic. It is characterized by pain, paresthesia, and numbness in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, although image and neurophysiological tests can be useful as well. Despite conservative measures use to be effective in most of patients, refractory cases can benefit from alternative treatments. Available surgical procedures are: nerve decompression (neurolysis) or section (neurectomy) and radiofr

We report the case of an iliopsoas hematoma caused by an iliolumbar branch pseudoaneurysm, following a relatively minor blunt pelvic trauma. Laboratory investigation revealed an as yet undiagnosed von Willebrand's disease. The pseudoaneurysm was successfully embolized superselectively and the hematoma, causing femoral neuropathy, was subsequently drained surgically without major bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of entrapment neuropathies based on nerve decompression. A different approach applies in the case of meralgia paraesthetica affecting the purely sensory lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Established treatment options include both decompression and LFCN neurectomy. The latter not only provides symptomatic relief but also enables proper histopathological analysis, offering deeper insight into the etiopathogenesis of meralgia paraesthetica.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 14 LFCNs neurectomies were performed 13 patients at our department between 2015 and 2022. Histopath

OBJECTIVE: Suprainguinal re-resection of the proximal nerve stump can be performed in case of persistent or recurrent symptoms of meralgia paresthetica after previous transection of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Currently, no long-term results for this procedure have been reported in the literature.
METHODS: In this study, 20 consecutive patients with persistent (13 cases) or recurrent (7 cases) symptoms of meralgia paresthetica were reoperated at a mean interval of 16 months after the first transection of the LFCN. The proximal nerve stump was sent for histopathologic analysis

A 4 months and half female child come to our attention for congenital dislocation of the left hip, previously treated in another hospital with abduction bracing, without satisfactory results. After progressive longitudinal bilateral traction, closed reduction under general anesthesia was performed and a spica cast was applied in the so-called human position. The patients remained in the spica cast for 6 weeks and then the plaster cast was renewed in narcosis for another 6 weeks. Once the second cast has been removed left femoral nerve palsy was detected. Orthopaedic treatment was interrupted a
