Analysis of dechlorination kinetics of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons by Fe(II) in cement slurries.

Degradative solidification/stabilization with ferrous iron (DS/S-Fe(II)) has been found to be effective in degrading a number of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons including 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA), 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (1,1,2,2-TeCA), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1-dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE), vinyl chloride (VC), carbon tetrachloride (CT) and chloroform (CF). Previous studies have characterized degradation kinetics in DS/S-Fe(II) systems as affected by Fe(II) dose, pH and initial target organic concentration. The goal of this study is to investigate the

Towards passive bioremediation of dye-bearing effluents using hydrous ferric oxide wastes: Mechanisms, products and microbiology.

A novel, circular economy-inspired approach for the "passive" (non-powered and reagent-free) treatment of dye-bearing effluent is presented. The treatment utilises the biogeochemical interaction of dye-bearing wastewater with hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) bearing sludges. The work presented demonstrates for the first time the reuse of HFO-rich waste sludges from potable water and mine water treatment. The waste was used directly without modification or reagent addition, as media/substrate in simple flow-through reactors for the decolourisation and biodegradation of methyl orange (MO) and mixed dy

Chromium(III) substitution inhibits the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation of schwertmannite.

Schwertmannite is an Fe(III)-oxyhydroxysulfate which is common in acid mine drainage (AMD) and acid sulfate soil (ASS) environments. Natural schwertmannite is often enriched in Cr(III), yet the effects of Cr(III) substitution on schwertmannite transformation to more stable Fe(III) minerals has not been addressed. Here we examine, for the first time, the effects of Cr(III) substitution on the Fe(II)-accelerated transformation of schwertmannite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy shows that Cr(III) substitution inhibits schwertmann

Iron Sulfides Produced by Thermococcales: An Iron Detoxification Mechanism.

Thermococcales, sulfur-reducing archaea inhabiting the hottest parts of hydrothermal vents, have evolved to thrive in environments rich in iron and sulfide species. In this study, using experimental analogues of sulfur-rich hydrothermal chimneys, we confirm previous suggestions that the precipitation of iron sulfide minerals promoted by Thermococcales contributes to a population-wide adaptation to reactive species induced by the presence of high levels of iron. In parallel with mineral phases identification, cellular metabolic activity was monitored during mineralization, revealing a mechanism

Sustained-Release Reducing Microenvironment Tailors Highly Crystalline FeSx Shells on Zero-Valent Iron for Enhanced Electron Transfer.

The crystallinity of the iron sulfide (FeSx) layer critically determines the interfacial electron transfer and reactivity of sulfidated zero-valent iron (SZVI). However, in heterogeneous synthesis systems, the native oxide layer on ZVI and inefficient sulfur utilization lead to poor FeSx crystallinity, limiting interfacial electron transfer. Therefore, developing regulatory strategies to promote the ordered growth of FeSx is crucial for enhancing the reactivity and environmental adaptability of the SZVI. Herein, we develop a surface-engineered strategy in which a sustained-release agent, L-asc

A shift between mineral and nonmineral sources of iron and sulfur causes proteome-wide changes in Methanosarcina barkeri.

Iron (Fe) and sulfur (S) are required elements for life, and changes in their availability can limit the ecological distribution and function of microorganisms. In anoxic environments, soluble Fe typically exists as ferrous iron [Fe(II)] and S as sulfide (HS-). These species exhibit a strong affinity that ultimately drives the formation of sedimentary pyrite (FeS2). Recently, paradigm-shifting studies indicate that Fe and S in FeS2 can be made bioavailable by methanogens through a reductive dissolution process. However, the impact of the utilization of FeS2, as opposed to canonical Fe and S so

Enhanced Arsenate Immobilization by Kaolinite via Heterogeneous Pathways during Ferrous Iron Oxidation.

Clay minerals are ubiquitous in subsurface environments and have long been recognized as having a limited or negligible impact on the fate of arsenic (As) due to their negatively charged surfaces. Here, we demonstrate the significant role of kaolinite (Kln), a pervasive clay mineral, in enhancing As(V) immobilization during ferrous iron (Fe(II)) oxidation at near-neutral pH. Our results showed that Fe(II) oxidation alone was not capable of immobilizing As(V) at relatively low Fe/As molar ratios (≤2) due to the generation of Fe(III)-As(V) nanocolloids that could still migrate easily as truly di

Iron(II) Complexes with Porphyrin and Tetrabenzoporphyrin: CASSCF/MCQDPT2 Study of the Electronic Structures and UV-Vis Spectra by sTD-DFT.

The geometry and electronic structures of iron(II) complexes with porphyrin (FeP) and tetrabenzoporphyrin (FeTBP) in ground and low-lying excited electronic states are determined by DFT (PBE0/def2-TZVP) calculations and the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method, followed by the multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate second-order perturbation theory (MCQDPT2) approach to determine the dynamic electron correlation. The minima on the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the ground (3A2g) and low-lying, high-spin (5A1g) electronic states correspond to the planar structures of F

The Coupled Effect of Light and Iron on the Photogranulation Phenomenon.

Cyanobacteria occasionally self-immobilize and form spherical aggregates. This photogranulation phenomenon is central for oxygenic photogranules, which present potential for aeration-free and net-autotrophic wastewater treatment. Light and iron are tightly coupled via photochemical cycling of Fe, suggesting that phototrophic systems continually respond to their combined effects. Thus far, photogranulation has not been investigated from this important aspect. Here, we studied the effects of light intensity on the fate of Fe and their combined effects on the photogranulation process. Photogranul

In-situ speciation and estimation of iron(II) and iron(III) contents in anisotropic polysaccharide-based hydrogel by 1H low-field nuclear magnetic resonance.

This article aims to quantify and differentiate in-situ iron(II) and/or iron(III) in heterogeneous polygalacturonate hydrogels using the 1H-NMR relaxometry technique. This holds significant importance, for example, in addressing iron-deficiency anemia through the oral administration of iron(II) supplements. The NMR dispersion profiles of the gels exhibited markedly distinct relaxation behaviors corresponding to the different iron oxidation states. At 20 MHz, two primary relaxation mechanisms must be considered: relaxation arising from water molecules confined within the polygalacturonate fiber

Effects of ferrous addition to Vallisneria natans: An attempt to apply ferrous to submerged macrophyte restoration.

Restoration of submerged macrophytes is an efficient way for endogenous nutrient control and aquatic ecological restoration, but slow growth and limited reproduction of submerged macrophytes still exist. In this research, the effect of ferrous on the seed germination and growth of Vallisneria natans (V. natans) were studied through aquatic simulation experiments and its influence on the rhizosphere microbial community was also explored. The seed germination, growth, and physiological and ecological parameters of V. natans were significantly affected by the ferrous treatments. Ferrous concentra

Co-precipitation of iron and silicon: Reaction kinetics, elemental ratios and the influence of phosphorus.

A sufficient supply of dissolved silicon (DSi) relative to dissolved phosphorus (DP) may decrease the likelihood of harmful algal blooms in eutrophic waters. Oxidative precipitation of Fe(II) at oxic-anoxic interfaces may contribute to the immobilization of DSi, thereby exerting control over the DSi availability in the overlying water. Nevertheless, the efficacy of DSi immobilization in this context remains to be precisely determined. To investigate the behavior of DSi during Fe(II) oxidation, anoxic solutions containing mixtures of aqueous Fe(II), DSi, and dissolved phosphorus (DP) were expos

Remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil mixed with chromite ore processing residue by ferrous sulfate and enzyme residue.

In this study, Cr(VI)-contaminated soil mixed with COPR by using ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), enzyme residue (ER), and their combination under aerobic or anaerobic condition were investigated. The concentration of Cr(VI) decreased from 1498.05 to 104.63 mg kg-1 after the simultaneous addition of FeSO4 (30 %, w/w as FeSO4·7H2O) and ER (30 %, w/w) at 45 d under the anaerobic condition with a reduction efficiency of 93.02 %, which is higher than that by single FeSO4 (72.39 %) or ER (75.47 %) under the anaerobic condition. XRD, XPS, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy were conducted to characterize so

Kinetics of iron absorption from ferrous fumarate with and without galacto-oligosaccharides determined from stable isotope appearance curves in women.

BACKGROUND: Prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are novel enhancers of iron absorption from ferrous fumarate (FeFum). However, the mechanism(s) of this effect, and whether it occurs in the proximal or distal gut, are uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We studied: 1) in vitro, the effect of GOS on iron solubility and dialyzability from FeFum; 2) in volunteers, the absorption kinetics of FeFum given with and without GOS using stable isotope appearance curves (SIAC). METHODS: We measured iron solubility at various pH and dialyzability from FeFum with and without GOS. In crossover design, iron-depleted

Insights into Fe(Ⅱ)-sulfite-based pretreatment strategy for enhancing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge: Performance and mechanism.

This paper proposed a concept of "co-treating" waste activated sludge (WAS) with waste-derived sulfite and environmentally-friendly ferrous iron. The maximal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from WAS anaerobic fermentation ascended by 27.1 times after pretreated by Fe(Ⅱ) activated sulfite with a sulfite dosage of 500 mg S/L and a Fe(Ⅱ)/sulfite ratio of 1.25. Mechanism explorations elucidated that the production of SO4·- and ·OH induced by Fe(Ⅱ)-activated sulfite-auto-oxidation remarkably promoted the disintegration of WAS and the biodegradability of dissolved organic matter, leading

Effects of iron-based substrate on coupling of nitrification, aerobic denitrification and Fe(II) autotrophic denitrification in tidal flow constructed wetlands.

The aerobic properties of nitrification and the anaerobic properties of denitrification in constructed wetlands are difficult to reconcile. In this study, two constructed wetlands were constructed with pyrite and steel slag in combination with zeolite, and their respective nitrification and denitrification capacities were evaluated under different tidal strategies. The steel slag wetland achieved 70.89 % and 46.04 % removal rates of NH4+-N and total nitrogen (TN), and the carbon consumption of denitrification was 1.51 mg BOD/mgN, which was better than pyrite wetland. Microbial analysis showed

Oxygen vacancies and interfacial iron sites in hierarchical BiOCl nanosheet microflowers cooperatively promoting photo-Fenton.

Controllable active site construction, crystal structure regulation and efficient charge separation are core issues in heterogeneous photo-Fenton. Herein, abundant oxygen vacancies and well-dispersed interfacial iron sites are simultaneously constructed in hierarchical nanosheet-assembled BiOCl microflowers. The composites exhibit superior performance in photo-Fenton oxidation of carbamazepine (10 mg L-1) with a low H2O2 concentration (1.3 mM). The high performance highly depends on the synergistic effects between oxygen vacancies and iron species. Rather than modulating the valence band, the
