Ossifying fibroma of the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses: A report of a rare case and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Fibro-osseous lesions include a variety of bone lesions with different clinical and histopathological features. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of cemento-ossifying lesion involving the left ethmoid and sphenoid sinus in a 17-year-old male patient. Computed tomography showed an expansile hyperdense lesion with sclerosed peripheral mantle epicentered on the left ethmoid and sphenoid sinus and extending into the left nasal cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging was done for preoperative planning. Transnasal endoscopic resection was performed and histopathological examination confirme

Preserving periodontal tissue in the treatment of a large peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case study.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive, benign gingival enlargement. Its etiology is not fully known. It can be seen in many different sizes in the mouth. The histopathological appearance of POF is mineralized tissue and fibrous proliferation. All relevant soft and hard tissues must be removed to prevent recurrence. Periodontal tissue remaining after excision is important for tooth preservation. With large lesions, the loss of healthy periodontal tissue is also large. Periodontal surgical approaches are important to preserve the remaining periodontal tissue. The positive effects of a

Assessing the contribution of HRPT2 to the pathogenesis of jaw fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and osteosarcoma.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate HRPT2 in jaw ossifying fibroma (OF), fibrous dysplasia (FD), and osteosarcoma (OS). STUDY DESIGN: We combined microsatellite loss of heterozygosity (LOH), HRPT2 sequence alterations at the mRNA level by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cDNA sequencing, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) in a total of 19 OF, 15 FD, and 9 OS. Because HRPT2 (parafibromin) interacts with cyclin D1, we investigated cyclin D1 expression with the use of qPCR and IHC. RESULTS: LOH was detected in 3/5 FD, 6/9 OF, and 2/2 OS heterozygous samples.

Nonrandom chromosome breakpoints at Xq26 and 2q33 characterize cemento-ossifying fibromas of the orbit.

BACKGROUND: Cytogenetic reports of histologically benign fibroosseous lesions are rare, with only nine previously reported cases. None of these previous studies revealed consistent numerical or structural chromosome aberrations, and to the authors' knowledge, no karyotypic abnormalities in cemento-ossifying fibromas of the orbit have been reported. METHODS: Short term in situ culture and Giesma-band chromosome methods were used to analyze three cementifying fibromas of the orbit: one from a 13-year-old African American male, one from a 14-year-old Hispanic male, and one from a 17-year-old whi

Craniofacial Ossifying Fibromas in Children: Clinical Variability and Surgical Outcomes in a Case Series.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare benign fibro-osseous tumor affecting the craniofacial skeleton in children and adolescents. Although nonmalignant, it may behave aggressively and extend into adjacent structures such as the orbit or anterior skull base. Early symptoms are often subtle, delaying diagnosis. Two histologic variants exist - trabecular and psammomatoid - each with distinct clinical behavior and recurrence potential. We describe a case series of three pediatric patients (an 8-year-old male, a 13-year-old female, and a 16-year-old male) diagnosed with craniofacial JOF betwee

Unveiling a Silent Bone Lesion: Pathological Fracture in a Child With Non-Ossifying Fibroma.

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is a benign, self-limiting fibrous bone lesion commonly seen in children and adolescents, generally affecting the metaphysis of long bones. Although typically asymptomatic, larger NOF lesions can predispose patients to pathological fractures, especially in weight-bearing bones. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency room following a minor knee trauma that caused pain and an inability to bear weight on the affected leg. Imaging studies identified a large, well-defined lytic lesion in the distal femur, primarily suspected to be an aneurysmal or simple bone cyst

Non-ossifying Fibroma of Mandible in a Four-Year-Old Girl: A Case Report.

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is not prevelant in the mandible. It appears mostly in the long tubular bones in children and adolescents. We are presenting a case of a four-year-old girl reported to the maxillofacial department with painless swelling over the lower right side of the jaw. On the orthopantomogram (OPG), a well-defined multilocular radiolucency with a sclerotic margin was present. On computed tomography (CT), an expansile lytic lesion with cortical thinning without a breach in cortical continuity was noted. By correlating clinical and radiological features, a diagnosis of odontogeni

Radiotherapy for juvenile ossifying fibroma of the maxillary sinus: Case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that can be locally aggressive. It is typically treated with surgical excision. A few cases using adjuvant radiotherapy have been reported in the literature. METHODS: We report a case of JOF treated with surgical excision and adjuvant radiotherapy to minimize the risk of local recurrence. We also review the literature. RESULTS: Our patient tolerated radiotherapy without complication and had not experienced a local recurrence at the time of writing this manuscript. CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first reports of a

Non-ossifying fibromas: Case series, including in uncommon upper extremity sites.

AIM: To investigate non-ossifying fibromas (NOFs) common fibrous bone lesions in children that occur in bones of the lower extremities. METHODS: We analyzed 44 cases of NOF including 47 lesions, which were referred with a working diagnosis of neoplastic lesions. Lesions were located in the upper extremities (1 proximal humerus, 1 distal radius) and the lower extremities (25 distal femurs, 12 proximal and 4 distal tibias, and 4 proximal fibulas). RESULTS: Three cases had NOFs in multiple anatomical locations (femur and fibula in 1 case, femur and tibia in 2 cases). Overall, larger lesions > 4

Incidental Detection of Ossifying Fibroma of the Frontal Sinus on 99mTc-MDP Bone Scan.

Sinonasal ossifying fibroma is rare and frequently occurs in young adulthood with a female predominance. We present a case of a 48-year-old man with a history of newly diagnosed lung cancer, referred for whole-body bone scan for evaluation of metastatic disease, which showed 2 focal intense areas of tracer uptake in the frontal sinus region without other abnormalities. SPECT/CT revealed the activities were located in the frontal sinus, associated with scattered calcifications and well-defined margins. The postoperative pathological diagnosis was ossifying fibroma.

Ossifying fibroma of the mandible with primary hyperparathyroidism due to non-familial parathyroid adenoma.

Ossifying fibroma is an uncommon benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from cells of the periodontal ligament, typically with a slowly progressive enlargement of the affected bone. The neoplasm sometimes presents with hyperparathyroidism, most of which cases are due to familial parathyroid tumours. We report a rare case of ossifying fibroma of the mandible which showed very rapid growth and presented with primary hyperparathyroidism due to non-familial parathyroid adenoma. Despite improvement of parathyroid dysfunction after removal of the parathyroid adenoma, the tumour continued to grow very ag

Ossifying fibroma of the head and neck: involvement of the temporal bone- and unusual and challenging site.

Ossifying fibroma of the head and neck is most commonly described in the mandible and maxilla. A few isolated reports in the literature exhibit the rare existence of this lesion in the nasal bones, orbit, ethmoid sinus, sphenoid sinus, occiput, and in only two well-documented cases, the temporal bone. We present the case of an extensive ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone that presented as a suspected case of hyperostosis of the external auditory canal and conductive hearing loss, without any cosmetic deformity. A review of the recent literature concerning the sites, radiologic presentation

Pathological fractures through non-ossifying fibromas. Review of the Mayo Clinic experience.

Twenty-three cases of a pathological fracture through a lesion verified histologically as non-ossifying fibroma were seen over a forty-nine-year period. The average age of the patients at the time of fracture was twelve years. All fractures except one were located in the lower extremity, most frequently in the distal end of the tibia (ten). The percentage of bone occupied by the fibroma in the transverse plane exceeded 50 per cent on both the anteroposterior and the lateral radiographs in every patient. The vertical length was always the maximum dimension and in all non-fibular lesions exceede

[The differential diagnosis of aneurysmal bones cysts and non-ossifying fibromas (author's transl)].

With the help of intraosseous angiography, and bearing in mind the plain films and histopathological basis of the lesions, it is now possible to differentiate with certainty between a non-ossifying fibroma and an aneurysmal bone cyst. Since 20% of aneurysmal bone cysts recur after curretage or excision and most non-ossifying fibromas disappear spontaneously, intraosseous angiography has a valuable place in diagnosis.

Two-stage surgical treatment for a giant sellar psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma: case report.

Psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma (PJOF) is an uncommon, benign fibro-osseous tumor. It is a purely surgical disease, and a review of the literature revealed that adjuvant therapies, including chemotherapy and radiation, play a limited role. The authors report the case of a 16-year-old male refugee who presented with a giant sinonasal PJOF with parasellar invasion, after having been unable to undergo earlier surgical treatment. The delay in presentation resulted in a large lesion with bilateral optic nerve compression, blindness, and frontal lobe compression. The patient was surgically t

Unilateral visual loss resulting from orbital encroachment of an ethmoidal juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma.

Ossifying fibromas are mainly found in the mandible and maxilla. Reports of them arising in the ethmoid sinuses and orbits are rare. We present a case of an otherwise healthy 20-year-old man with gradual onset of right visual disturbance signified by right relative afferent pupillary defect due to a large unilateral ossifying fibroma arising from the ethmoid sinus compressing the medial half of the right orbit. We emphasise the multidisciplinary combined endoscopic endonasal and external approach to ensure a successful debulking of the fibroma.

Psammomatoid and trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma of the craniofacial skeleton: two distinct clinicopathologic entities.

The term juvenile ossifying fibroma is used in the literature in naming 2 microscopically distinct fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial skeleton. One is characterized by small uniform spherical ossicles resembling psammoma bodies (psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma). The other is distinguished by trabeculae of fibrillary osteoid and woven bone (trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma). Three new cases of each type are reported, and the literature is extensively reviewed for published cases of these 2 entities.Psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma is reported more commonly than trabec

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma in the frontal sinus: An intriguing clinical encounter-A detailed case report.

BACKGROUND: Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) is a rare craniofacial neoplasm, primarily affecting the maxillofacial region, and typically observed in adolescents and young adults. This case report presents a unique occurrence of POF in a 50-year-old male, defying the conventional age range and exhibiting an unusual anatomical location within the frontal sinus. CASE: A 50-year-old male with a prior history of cecal adenocarcinoma and colectomy presented with left eye proptosis and new-onset headaches. Imaging revealed a well-defined calcified mass in the left frontal sinus, leading to a di
