In a 51-year-old woman with a history of fractures and dislocations after low intensity trauma in childhood, intensive blue sclera, short stature, and hearing loss, the diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was suspected. She was referred to our clinic with hand deformities and left knee pain and stiffness. She had difficulty in walking and reported a history of immobilization for 6 months because of knee pain. She had bilateral flexion contracture of the elbows which occurred following dislocations of the elbows in childhood. She had Z deformity of the first phalanges, reducible swan-neck

The author presents the case of a 32-year-old woman with the diagnosis of Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa is a rare form of localized gigantism characterised by an abnormal overgrowth of the mesenchymal elements of one or more digits. For the rheumatologist this disease has interest due the possibility of musculoskeletal complaints, namely compression of the neurovascular structures and local degenerative articular disease.

Index finger polydactyly in a Turkish family is reported. The transmission of the malformation fits the pattern of regular autosomal dominant inheritance. Some of the affected individuals had one or two phalanges on their first digits, but all had triphalangeal second fingers. Subjects with polydactyly had very interesting dermatoglyphs, such as an extra a triradius under the super-numerary index finger, the proximal radiant of this triradius (an extra A-line) ending on the radial border of the hand, and arch tibials in the hallucal areas. The carpal bones, beginning with os multangulum majus,

The authors report a case of a third finger angulation deformity. This radial deviation deformity is owed to a local radiation for verrucae vulgaris at 16 years old. The treatment by corrective osteotomy of the phalange was performed with satisfactory correction and full restoration of function.

As an alternative to amputation of the little finger, we report here seven cases of shortening arthrodesis carried out by resecting the middle phalanx and proximodistal interphalangeal (PDIP) arthrodesis. Our cohort consisted of 6 males and 1 female (58years average age), with a stiff little finger secondary to Dupuytren's disease or trauma. All fingers were approached dorsally; after resection of the middle phalanx and decortication of the subchondral bone, fusion of the remaining phalanges was performed using an intramedullary self-breaking screw-pin. At a mean follow-up of 34.9months, pain

We report on a 4-year-old girl with blepharophimosis, a typical facial gestalt and skeletal abnormalities seen in the blepharofacioskeletal syndrome (BFSS). A comparative review with previous cases provides further evidence that BFSS and Schilbach-Rott syndrome (SRS) are the same condition.

The functional roles of the three-dimensional fibrillar ultrastructure of the proximal interphalangeal joint volar plates of human fingers were studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that the volar plate consists of three layers of fibers. The first layer forms an intracavity wall with two parts, the proximal "membranous portion", and the distal "meniscoid protrusion" that is separated from the middle phalangeal base by a "recess". The second layer contains the "check ligament", which lies parallel to the fibers of the tendon, anchors tightly into th

Corrective osteotomies are often utilised to treat finger deformities that may occur due to a phalangeal malunion. Rotational or angular malalignment, in addition to shortening of the digit may negatively affect hand function and be aesthetically displeasing. Thorough preoperative examination of the malunion and its associated deformities is crucial in determining the type of osteotomy technique to be used. Osteotomies can create bony defects that need to be filled with bone graft or some type of graft substitute. We describe an opening wedge osteotomy with local cancellous bone graft combined

Background: To describe the rate and predictors of pathologic fractures in benign neoplasms of the finger, as variables from prediction models for pathologic fractures of the long bones of the extremities are not necessarily applicable to the bones of the hand. Methods: In this retrospective chart review, 69 histologically confirmed neoplasms affecting the bones of the fingers, 49 phalanges and 20 metacarpals, were identified in patients presenting at 2 urban hospitals over a 24-year period. Different variables were studied as possible predictors of pathologic fractures. Results: Forty-nine pe

BACKGROUND: Various factors are discovered in the development of clinodactyly. The purpose of this retrospective study was to present a group of children with a rare clinodactyly deformity caused by phalangeal intra-articular osteochondroma and evaluate the efficacy of various treatment methods.
METHODS: All child patients that were treated for finger problems in our center between Jan 2017 and Dec 2020 were reviewed. A detailed analysis was made of the diagnosis and treatment methods in eight rare cases. X-rays and histopathology were applied.
RESULTS: A preliminary analysis of 405 patients

Symbrachydactyly is literally defined as a combination of short fingers with syndactyly. Blauth and Gekeler described four types of symbrachydactyly, ranging from simple shortness of middle phalanges to complete absence of digital rays. In type I (short finger) function is quite normal and syndactyly release is usually the only procedure needed. In type II (cleft hand), presence of a thumb and at least one ulnar finger allows pinch function. Surgical treatment, when needed, consists in separation of webbed fingers, resection of nonfunctional digital stumps, or finger translocation. In type III

BACKGROUND: Although treatments have been proposed for calcinosis cutis (CC) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), a standardized and validated method for CC burden quantification is necessary to enable valid clinical trials. We tested the hypothesis that computer vision applied to dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) finger images is a useful approach for precise and accurate CC quantification in SSc patients.
METHODS: De-identified 2-dimensional (2D) DECT images from SSc patients with clinically evident lesser finger CC lesions were obtained. An expert musculoskeletal radiologist con

The proximal phalangeal base is the most commonly fractured hand bone in children. Such fractures are rarely reported as irreducible due to flexor tendon entrapment. Here, we describe a patient who sustained a malunited fracture on the right fifth finger proximal phalanx with flexor tendon entrapment after treatment with closed reduction with K-wires fixation.A 13-year-old patient came to the clinic following a bicycle accident 6 weeks ago. He presented with flexion limitation in his small finger on the right hand. During physical examination, the patient felt no pain, and the neurovascular st

BACKGROUND: The human hand plays a significant role in the identification of sex and identity, especially when partial remains are recovered from crime scenes. This study explores the importance of using digital phalanx lengths to estimate Hand Length (HL), examine sexual dimorphism, and identify the most reliable biometric predictors of sex in the Bengali population. This study collected bilateral palm impressions from 100 university-level students (50 men, 20.18 ± 1.38; 50 women, 19.61 ± 1.48) from North 24 Pargana District. Different phalanx segments were measured and correlated with HL usi

BACKGROUND: The impact of high-intensity, repetitive training on the fingers of adolescent climbers is relatively unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate this effect by ultrasound (US) and to confirm some findings by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The US study was performed in 20 adolescent rock climbers (ages 10-17 years) and 6 non-climbing controls (ages 11-15 years). US was used to examine the third digit of the right hand for differences in thickness of soft tissue, flexor and extensor tendon, volar plate and bony and growth plate adaptations. In four climbers with fing

The majority of the patients, who underwent amputation of one or more fingers or present congenital absence of some phalanges, can be treated by microsurgical reconstruction. Several reconstructive techniques are available, but in some cases the use of osseous-integrated implants to anchor silicon digital prosthesis is a valid alternative. We present one case, a 27 years old male, affected by congenital hypoplasia of the second finger of the right hand who underwent reconstruction by prosthesis and extraoral bone-anchored implant.

A cutmarked bear metatarsal and phalanx from the German open-air sites of Schöningen 12 II-1 and 12 B, respectively, correlated with the interglacial optimum of MIS 9 (ca. 320 ka), provide early evidence for the exploitation of bear skins. Archaeological sites with evidence of bear exploitation from the Lower Paleolithic are rare, with only Boxgrove (United Kingdom) and Bilzingsleben (Germany) yielding cutmarked bear bones indicating skinning. We interpret these finds as evidence for bear hunting and primary access since bear skins are best extracted shortly after the animal's death. The very
