BACKGROUND: Gun violence is a growing public health crisis, with firearm-related vascular injuries leading to significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. Survivors of these injuries often experience severe complications, including limb loss, nerve damage, and prolonged hospital stays, contributing to long-term disability and economic burden. Vascular injuries, particularly those involving significant vessels such as the abdominal aorta, inferior vena cava, and femoral arteries, require complex surgical interventions and extensive postoperative care. These cases are associated with

Head gunshot injuries in civilian settings are severe traumas associated with high morbidity and mortality. Most studies focus on populations from regions with high firearm violence, limiting their applicability to low-violence settings. This study investigates the characteristics, management, and outcomes of head gunshot injuries in the Czech Republic, a country with low firearm-related violence and a unique injury profile dominated by suicides. We analyzed a prospectively collected cohort of 100 patients treated for head gunshot injuries at a single center between 2000 and 2024. Inclusion cr

BACKGROUND: This case report depicts a rare clinical scenario where emergency cardiac surgery was required following a firearm wound resulting in traumatic aortic arch injury. A penetrating injury of the aortic arch is a life-threatening condition with a high overall mortality rate. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper we present a 53-year-old male who presented to the emergency department after being shot. The patient's management started with a comprehensive assessment including contrast-enhanced computer tomography (CT) scan, crucial in delineating the precise anatomical extension of the injury

BACKGROUND: French Guiana (FG) is a French territory located in South America with the highest rate of armed assaults. FG presents a poorly developed road system and a young and precarious population that makes the geographical and socio-demographic characteristics specific. No data concerning the firearm injury management are available in this country. Studying thesis trauma could permit to improve the management of victims. The objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiology of firearm injuries in FG, to define characteristics of the victims, and to assess factors associated with

OBJECTIVES: Functional limitations may be associated with firearm ownership among veterans by amplifying perceptions of vulnerability and the need for security, yet their role remains underexplored despite emerging research on health-related factors influencing firearm acquisition in this group. This study examines the relationship between the number of functional limitations and recent firearm purchasing among a sample of low-income US military veterans.
METHODS: Data are from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study, which surveyed US veterans in household

This article presents two cases of fatal injuries from rifled weapons with unconventional shapes of inlets and exits mismatched with the distance of firing. According to forensic literature, in long-distance ranges, we expected to see rounded entry wounds smaller than bullet size, circular in shape without associates with limited damage in the tissues. In the first case, there were large wounds which did not match a distance of more than 2 m, while in the second case, the distance was more than 30 m with large wounds 21 × 10 cm and massive damage to bones and lungs. In the first case, a 25-yea

AIMS: Firearms have become an increasingly common method of suicide among women Veterans, yet this population has rarely been a focus in firearm suicide prevention research. Limited knowledge is available regarding the preferences, experiences, or needs of women Veterans with respect to firearm lethal means counseling (LMC), an evidence-based suicide prevention strategy. Understanding is necessary to optimize delivery for this population.
METHOD: Our sample included forty women Veterans with lifetime suicidal ideation or suicide attempt(s) and firearm access following military separation, all

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how characteristics of victims and types of incidents described in a media account of gun violence affect public support for three categories of policies that regulate firearms.
METHODS: A randomized experiment with a sample of US public (N = 3410).
RESULTS: Victim race, particularly if the victim was Black, was a strong predictor of less public support for all tested categories of firearm regulation. Respondents were less supportive of policies to address gun suicide or accidents and more supportive of policy solutions to mass shootings, compared to street-le

This study examined the prevalence of firearm ownership among low-income U.S. military veterans and associated sociodemographic, trauma, and clinical characteristics. Data were analyzed from a nationally representative study of low-income U.S. veterans conducted in 2021 (n = 1,004). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses identified characteristics associated with firearm ownership and mental health correlates of firearm ownership. The results revealed 41.7% of low-income U.S. veterans (95% confidence interval [CI] = 38.7-44.8%) reported owning firearms in their household. Controlling for ot

After high-profile events involving firearms, gun violence often becomes the center stage of public discourse with national media attention, overshadowing less common causes of homicidal deaths, such as sharp force injury, blunt trauma, and asphyxia. A retrospective analysis of all cases referred for medicolegal autopsy to the Medical and Forensic Autopsy Division of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2013 to 2018 documented 793 deaths where the manner was classified as homicide. Of these, 18% (144) of the deaths were caused by

OBJECTIVE: To describe the adult functional, participation, education, employment, and quality of life outcomes of children who incurred spinal cord injury (SCI) as the result of gun injuries vs. non-violent etiologies, as well as their utilization of health services.
DESIGN: Retrospective-cohort study. Eligibility criteria were current age at least 18 years, at least 5 years after SCI, and injury prior to 19 years of age. After enrolling the gun injury group, we matched individuals with non-violent etiologies from the Midwest Regional SCI Model System database to the gun injury group's demog

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the association between direct exposure, indirect exposure, and perpetration of gun violence and suicidal ideation among young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH).
METHODS: YAEH (n = 1,426) in seven cities across the U.S. were surveyed. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between lifetime gun violence exposure and suicidal ideation in the past 12 months.
RESULTS: Forty-five percent (n = 641) of YAEH had experienced direct or indirect gun violence, whereas 17% (n = 247) had engaged in gun violence perpetration. Gun vi

IMPORTANCE: Firearm injuries and fatalities among children are an important public health problem. Children living with an adult misusing alcohol may be at a heightened risk for self-harm or unintentional injury, highlighting the need to investigate the association between household firearm storage and adult alcohol misuse.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize household firearm presence among children by various sociodemographic characteristics, and to assess the association between children living in a home with an unsafely stored firearm and an adult reporting alcohol misuse.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use, mental disorders, and arrest are markers of increased firearm injury risk. It is unclear how these markers vary by intent. Examining these interrelated factors together can clarify their associations with assault-related, self-inflicted, unintentional, and legal intervention firearm injuries, informing intent-specific interventions.
METHODS: In 2017-2018, 2-year diagnosis and arrest histories of intent-specific firearm injury cases were compared with those of unintentionally injured motor vehicle collision passenger controls. Fatal and nonfatal firearm and motor v

A loaded firearm in the home increases the risk of firearm-related mortality. Furthermore, firearms are often used in fatal cases of intimate partner physical violence (IPPV) during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Young children are often caught in the crossfire. Although firearms are more prevalent in homes with IPPV compared with homes without IPPV, little is known about the relationship between a loaded firearm and maternal IPPV. The objective was to determine whether maternal IPPV in the context of additional psychosocial factors is associated with a loaded firearm in the home. We

BACKGROUND: Penetrating injuries to the head and neck may not be able to cause unstable fractures without concomitant spinal cord injury, rendering prehospital spinal immobilization (PHSI) ineffectual, and possibly harmful. However, this premise is based on reports including predominantly chest and abdominal injuries, which are unlikely to cause cervical spine (CS) injuries.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients presenting with a penetrating wound to the head or neck over a 4-year period at an urban, level 1 trauma center to determine if there was a benefit of PHSI.

To establish a finite element (FE) model of the pig head for simulating firearm wounds. An experimental study was carried out by measuring impact load parameters from 17 fresh pig heads that were shot at the right part of cranium by a standard 7.62 mm M43 bullet. FE analysis was executed through the LS-DYNA code under impact loads similar to those obtained from the experimental study. The residual velocity, the transferred energy from the bullet to the cranium, and the surface area of the entrance showed no statistical differences between the FE simulation and the experimental study. However,
