PURPOSE: Recent reports indicate decreased susceptibility of S. typhi to fluoroquinolones, especially ciprofloxacin. Chloramphenicol has been suggested as first line therapy of enteric fever in many studies. This is a prospective study that describes the trends of antimicrobial susceptibility of S. typhi and S. paratyphi A causing bacteraemia in children and reports therapeutic failure to ciprofloxacin and evaluates the possible use of chloramphenicol, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin and third generation cephalosporins as first line therapy in the treatment of enteric fever in children.

Fifty-six E. coli, 37 P. multocida und 8 M. haemolytica were isolated from 157 nasal swabs taken from calves in 52 dairy herds. The antibiotic susceptibility of the organisms was determined by measurement of the minimal inhibitory concentrations. Of the 56 E. coli isolates, 55.3% exhibited resistance to tetracyclines, 55.3% to sulfonamides, 39.3% to beta-lactams, 30.3% to aminoglycosides, 8.9% to fluorochinolones and 3.5% to 3rd generation cephalosporins. The 3rd generation cephalosporin- resistant isolates contained the extended spectrum-beta-lactamase gene blaCTX-M-14 and came from 2 farms w

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening complication in patients with ascites caused by advanced liver disease. While gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia are the common pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes has been recognized as a very rare pathogen. Empirical treatment with third generation cephalosporins does not provide adequate antibiotics coverage against L. monocytogenes. Diagnosis is often delayed as it requires confirmation from ascitic fluid culture. Herein, we describe the first case of SBP caused by L. monocytogenes in a patie

Morganella morganii is a gram-negative bacillus with intrinsic resistance to many β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and first-/second-generation cephalosporins. It is frequently associated with urinary tract, wound, and respiratory infections, and can develop into bacteremia in older adults due to age-related comorbidities and immunosenescence, but this has rarely been described in children. In this report, we present the case of a 13-year-old male with a urinary tract infection complicated by M. morganii bacteremia, who was successfully treated with antibiotics. To our knowledge, th

A retrospective study of four sporadic cases of Listeria monocytogenes meningitis is reported. Contrary to the conventional epidemiology these patients were adults who were not immuno-compromised. Although all four cases produced positive cerebrospinal fluid cultures, in three, listeria was not microscopically identified. Protein and glucose contents of cerebrospinal fluids were variable and all samples showed lymphocytic pleocytosis. All four had neutrophil leucocytosis in peripheral blood. The unwary may dismiss lymphocytic meningitis as being of 'viral' origin, thereby making an important d

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1988eng
Nine cases of septic arthritis following arthroscopy are reviewed retrospectively. All cases of septic arthritis followed arthroscopic surgery. The average age of the patients was 49 years. The diagnosis was confirmed by bacterial cultures of the joint aspirates. All cases were treated by appropriate antibiotics supplemented by repeat arthroscopy and placement of a suction irrigation system. The average stay in hospital was 21 days. The authors suggest that it is not possible to predict such a major complication based on risk factors and therefore present a cost/benefit analysis of antibiotic

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has been reported to impact antimicrobial consumption (AMC) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide. We aimed to assess this correlation in Klebsiella pneumoniae before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to estimate the burden of each antibiotic. Methods: We collected data on AMC of penicillins and beta-lactamase inhibitors (PBIs), anti-pseudomonal activity penicillins and beta-lactamase inhibitors (AAPBIs), cephalosporins, carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, and AMR in K. pneumoniae strains. The correlation between AMC and AMR wa

β-Lactamases are the leading mechanism of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in Enterobacterales. Here, we report the detection and characteristics of SED-2, a new member of the Citrobacter sedlakii class A chromosomal β-lactamase SED family. A C. sedlakii isolate recovered during routine screening was subjected to whole genome sequencing. A new variant of SED-1 was identified and named SED-2. blaSED-1 and blaSED-2 were cloned into E. coli DH10β. The donor C. sedlakii and the recombinant Escherichia coli-SED-1 and E. coli-SED-2 were further characterized. Antibiotic susceptibilities were deter

BACKGROUND: The first line of prevention of surgical site infection relies on the timely administration of antibiotic prophylaxis. First- and second-generation cephalosporins are the most recommended antibiotics in elective surgery. The incidence of cefazolin allergy has increased worldwide over the years. The sensitization mechanism of cefazolin is currently unknown, and data supporting cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins are lacking. Sensitization could occur through previous exposure either to cefazolin or to structurally related chemical agents. The objective of this st

BACKGROUND: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) are a frequent cause of invasive infections in sub-Saharan Africa. They are frequently multidrug resistant (co-resistant to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol), and resistance to third-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone non-susceptibility have been reported. Third-generation cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are often used to treat invasive NTS infections, but azithromycin might be an alternative. However, data on antibiotic treatment efficacy in invasive NTS infections are lacking. In this study, we aimed to as

BACKGROUND: Excessive antibiotic use contributes to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The Japanese government implemented an antimicrobial stewardship incentive program for the paediatric population in 2018. However, its effect on prescription patterns and the AMR rates remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the implementation of the antimicrobial stewardship incentive program on AMR rates through changes in antimicrobial prescribing patterns.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed prescription patterns using data from a nationwide cl

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate variability among hospitals in susceptibility of common uropathogens to antimicrobial agents frequently used in transurethral procedures in order to examine whether state-based guidelines might be more appropriate than national prophylactic guidelines.
METHODS: Hospital-level antibiograms were requested from all hospitals throughout the state of Missouri. We studied Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Proteus sensitivities to evaluate common guideline recommended antimicrobials including trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), third-generation cephalosporins, cefazolin,

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing health problem worldwide with serious implications in global health. The overuse and misuse of antimicrobials has resulted in the spread of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms in humans, animals and the environment. Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance provides important information contributing to understanding dissemination within these environments. These data are often unavailable in low- and middle-income countries, such as Peru. This review aimed to determine the levels of antimicrobial resistance in non-clinical Escherichia col

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common cause of fever in children. Despite the increasing numbers of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing organisms in the community, the empirical therapy of choice is still third-generation cephalosporins. This study was performed to investigate whether inappropriate empirical therapy (IAT) of community-onset UTI results in adverse clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied a cohort of pediatric patients with first-episode community-onset UTI caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus spp. at Ramathibodi Hos

In Japan, hospitals' pharmaceutical affairs committees freely select the drugs to be purchased depending on the regulations of each hospital. This system poses a risk of the absence of essential drugs or an excess of similar drugs, and may promote inappropriate use of third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) and quinolones. Against this backdrop, we researched availability of antibacterial agents in Japanese hospitals. We conducted a questionnaire-based study in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Questionnaires were sent to 33 hospitals that had established an interactive regional partnership o

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases ranking next to upper respiratory tract infections. UTIs are often significantly associated with morbidity and mortality. The inappropriate administration of antibiotics to treat these infections increased infection resistance to antibiotics. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of antibiotic resistance pattern in UTIs.
METHODS: We searched several databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Iran Medex, Magiran, IranDoc, MedLib, and Scientific Information Database to

Among the aetiological agents of treatable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Neissseria gonorrhoeae is considered to be most important because of emerging antibiotic resistant strains that compromise the effectiveness of treatment of the disease - gonorrhoea. In most of the developing countries, treatment of gonorrhoea relies mainly on syndromic management rather than the aetiological based therapy. Gonococcal infections are usually treated with single-dose therapy with an agent found to cure > 95 per cent of cases. Unfortunately during the last few decades, N. gonorrhoeae has developed re
