An 18-y-old female llama (Lama glama) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was examined during a routine herd check, and a mass was detected in the ventral cervical area just below the angle of the jaw. No clinical signs were evident except for the mass and chronic loss of body condition. Postmortem examination revealed bilateral enlargement of the thyroid gland with multiple cysts. Histopathology of the thyroid gland revealed follicular compact-cellular carcinoma lesions, with infiltration of neoplastic thyroid follicular cells in regional lymph nodes.

The development of ovarian follicles was studied ultrasonographically in 21 cycles in eight infertile patients with the diagnosis of ovulatory dysfunction in whom conception did not occur after the defect had apparently been corrected. Pelvic ultrasound demonstrated three patterns in 20 of the 21 cycles studied: ovarian hyperstimulation in seven cycles; follicular atresia before ovulation in three cycles; persistent unruptured follicular cysts in 10 cycles. Recognition of these patterns has been helpful in modifying therapy in infertile patients.

The ovarian histopathology of bitches immunized with crude (cPZP) or partially purified (pPZP) porcine zona pellucida proteins was examined in order to determine the cause of abnormal estrous cycles. The case of a 24-year-old male patient affected by follicular occlusion tetrad (acne conglobata, hidradenitis suppurativa, pilonidal cyst and dissecting cellulitis of the scalp) associated with clinical signs of pachyonychia congenita (PC)-2 (focal palmoplantar keratoderma, plantar pain, onycodystrophy and multiple cysts) is reported. The diagnosis was supported by genetic analysis that showed heterozygous mutation within the exon 1 of KRT17 gene. This case may reflect different expressions of a phenotypic spectrum induced by a common genetic alteration.

A 66-year-old man was treated with cyclosporin A (Sandimmun) after a kidney transplant and developed numerous epidermal cysts, comedones and folliculitis in the 2nd year of the immunosuppressive therapy. The eruptions were more marked on the back and in the temporal and retroauricular regions of the face. Histological examination of a cystic tumour revealed a follicular cyst of the acro-infundibular type. While hypertrichosis and gingival hyperplasia are now well known as side effects of cyclosporin A, cystic and acneiform skin lesions must also be attributed to this drug.

Renal mass lesions with a follicular architecture resembling atrophic kidney have been described, but their distinction from thyroid-like follicular carcinoma of the kidney remains controversial. Ovarian cysts were diagnosed by antenatal ultrasonographic examination in 15 fetuses between 19 and 37 weeks' gestation. In six cases there was ultrasonographic evidence of torsion.
