Food safety/food security aspects related to the environmental release of pharmaceuticals.

The environmental presence of pharmaceuticals in top soil and in water where extensive animal farming occurs may represent an involuntary source of residues in food that might affect both food safety and food security. We modelled the presence of residues in animal matrices from the inventoried environmental concentration of selected drugs in surface waters (range: 0.1-10μgL(-1)) and agriculture soils (range: 1-100μgkg(-1) dry weight), accounting for animal production parameters (i.e., forages, water intake and milk and egg production) and drug pharmacokinetics. The results indicate that the c

EAACI food allergy and anaphylaxis guidelines: diagnosis and management of food allergy.

Food allergy can result in considerable morbidity, impact negatively on quality of life, and prove costly in terms of medical care. These guidelines have been prepared by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology's (EAACI) Guidelines for Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Group, building on previous EAACI position papers on adverse reaction to foods and three recent systematic reviews on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of food allergy, and provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of food allergy. While the primary audience is allergists, this

Clinical evaluation of food allergy and food intolerance dietary treatment in children.

Dietary treatment with Humana SL (33) or Prosobee (42) was administered to 75 children at the age from 1 month to 3 years with cow's milk allergy (36), coeliac disease (9), secondary enteropathy (30). The treatment time ranged from a few days (in case of intolerance symptoms) to 12 months. In 13 children intolerance symptoms or unwillingness to take food was observed: in 4 (12%) after the application of Humana SL and in 9 (21%) after Prosobee. Lack of improvement after Prosobee treatment was observed in 4 (10%) children, and in 4 (12%) children with Humana SL. The partial or total relief of sy

Algal Toxins, Food Safety, and Bioterrorism: A Food and Water Defense Perspective.

Food defense encompasses both the prevention of accidental contamination and the protection of food and water systems against deliberate adulteration. Within this framework, algal toxins deserve greater attention because they occupy a critical intersection of water security, seafood and drinking-water safety, environmental change, supply-chain continuity, and public health preparedness. The novelty of this review lies in reframing algal toxins from a primarily environmental, seafood safety, or clinical toxicology topic into an integrated food and water defense problem. This perspective brings

Decoupling food insecurity from shocks: A global analysis of food system resilience.

Food systems worldwide are increasingly exposed to climate extremes, conflicts, pandemics, and economic shocks, raising concerns about their capacity to safeguard food security and nutrition. Although resilience is now central in global policy debates, empirical evidence on what enables national food systems to withstand shocks remains limited. Here, we analyze a unique multi-country dataset integrating measures of shock severity, governance, economic conditions, social capitals, and food-system characteristics. Using a causal resilience-as-capacity framework and a series of hybrid econometric

Outcomes of oral food challenge in children with IgE-mediated food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Oral food challenges (OFCs) are the gold standard for diagnosing IgE-mediated food allergies in children, although they carry an inherent risk of inducing allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. This study examined clinical outcomes and predictors of positive OFC results in a pediatric cohort from a region with high exposure to sesame and tree nuts. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 310 OFCs in 211 children (median age: 21 months [IQR: 14-37.3]) at a tertiary pediatric allergy center from January 1 to December 31, 2023. Reaction patterns and predictors of OFC positivity, inc

Exploring the relationship between food literacy and food insecurity: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Interest in food insecurity (FI) has intensified amid global efforts to address dietary and nutritional issues. Food literacy (FL) has emerged as a key competency for promoting healthy eating behaviors and potentially mitigating FI. This systematic review synthesized evidence on the relationship between FL and FI by summarizing their definitions and components, comparing measurement tools, and examining overall trends and characteristics of their association. MATERIALS/METHODS: This review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020

Incidence of food allergic reactions among adolescents engaged in food allergy management.

BACKGROUND: Although fatal food-induced anaphylaxis is rare, adolescence is the period of highest risk. However, we lack strong estimates of the incidence of food allergic reactions among adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of food allergic and anaphylactic reactions among adolescents with food allergy who have a prescription for epinephrine. METHODS: As part of a cohort study that was embedded in a randomized trial to promote safe food allergy management, we followed adolescents aged 15 to 19 years with food allergy and a current prescription for epinephrine for a period of 15

Gut microbial composition modulates food-specific CD4 + T cells in food allergy.

The growing food allergy epidemic is thought to be related to changing environmental factors, particularly changes in the gut microbiome. While prior work has demonstrated that food allergy can be modulated by gut microbes, little is known about how food allergen-specific CD4 + T cells are affected by gut microbial composition. Here, we report that food allergy severity differs between mice obtained from two different specific pathogen-free mouse vendors (Jackson Labs [Jax] and Taconic Biosciences [Tac]). Mice from Tac develop diarrhea and anaphylaxis after fewer allergen exposures than mice f

Transepidermal water loss rises before food anaphylaxis and predicts food challenge outcomes.

BACKGROUNDFood allergy (FA) is a growing health problem requiring physiologic confirmation via the oral food challenge (OFC). Many OFCs result in clinical anaphylaxis, causing discomfort and risk while limiting OFC utility. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement provides a potential solution to detect food anaphylaxis in real time prior to clinical symptoms. We evaluated whether TEWL changes during an OFC could predict anaphylaxis onset.METHODSPhysicians and nurses blinded to the TEWL results conducted and adjudicated the results of all 209 OFCs in this study. Food Image Recognition and Food Safety Detection Method Based on Deep Learning.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

With the development of machine learning, as a branch of machine learning, deep learning has been applied in many fields such as image recognition, image segmentation, video segmentation, and so on. In recent years, deep learning has also been gradually applied to food recognition. However, in the field of food recognition, the degree of complexity is high, the situation is complex, and the accuracy and speed of recognition are worrying. This paper tries to solve the above problems and proposes a food image recognition method based on neural network. Combining Tiny-YOLO and twin network, this

Food trust in low trust environments. Negotiating food trust in belgian prisons.

This article examines how food trust is negotiated in Belgian penitentiaries. The study of food trust in prison, provides a particular context where the process can be understood in a low trust environment, and framed within a wider debate about food trust that has focused predominantly on how confidence is constructed in the context of outside society. A qualitative study, based on 60 in-depth interviews conducted with prisoners (41) and prison staff (19) and participant observations in prison kitchens, was carried out in five Belgian prisons. The findings show first, that trust in prisoners

Food-Related Contact Dermatitis, Contact Urticaria, and Atopy Patch Test with Food.

A wide variety of foods may cause or aggravate skin diseases such as contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, or atopic dermatitis (AD), both in occupational and private settings. The mechanism of action underlying allergic disease to food, food additives, and spices may be immunologic and non-immunologic. The classification and understanding of these reactions is a complex field, and knowledge of the possible reaction patterns and appropriate diagnostic test methods is essential. In addition, certain foods may cause worsening of atopic dermatitis lesions in children. The atopy patch test (APT)

Food safety knowledge, attitudes and practices of institutional food-handlers in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: In large scale cooking, food is handled by many individuals, thereby increasing the chances of food contamination due to improper handling. Deliberate or accidental contamination of food during large scale production might endanger the health of consumers, and have very expensive repercussions on a country. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices among institutional food- handlers in Ghana. METHODS: The study was conducted using a descriptive, cross-sectional survey of 29 institutions by conducting face to face interview and ad

Food, food choice and nutrition promotion in a remote Australian Aboriginal community.

Contemporary diets of Aboriginal people living in remote Australia are characterised by processed foods high in fat and sugar. Within the 'new' food system, evidence suggests many Aboriginal people understand food in their own terms but lack access to consumer information about store-purchased foods, and parents feel inadequate as role models. In a remote Australian Aboriginal community, purposive sampling identified adults who participated in semistructured interviews guided by food-based themes relating to the contemporary food system, parental guidance of children's food choice and channels

Food-specific serum immunoglobulin E measurements in children presenting with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: In children with food allergy, multiple food-specific serum IgE levels to common food allergens are frequently measured. OBJECTIVE: To compare food-specific serum IgE measurements among common food allergens in children with food allergy to determine the characteristics of the measurements, their ability to discriminate between foods associated and not associated with a presenting clinical reaction, and their change over time. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of food-specific serum IgE to cow's milk, egg white and yolk, peanuts, almond, and soy, for up to 3 subsequ

Think twice: misleading food-induced respiratory symptoms in children with food allergy.

Reported food-related symptoms of patients may sometimes be misleading. A correct delineation of food-induced symptoms is often difficult and various differential diagnoses have to be considered. We report on two cases of food-induced, predominantly respiratory symptoms (in one case life-threatening) in children with food allergy. First, a two-year-old boy with no history of allergies and suspected foreign body aspiration which was finally diagnosed as an anaphylactic reaction to fish, and secondly a six-year-old girl with multiple food allergies and allergic asthma who during an electively pe
