Does Singular and Stacked Corn Affect Choice Behavior for Oviposition and Feed in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)?

Little is known about the effects of genetically modified corn plants on the foraging of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Therefore, this study examines whether singular herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant plants and their stacked events interfere with food preference and oviposition of S. frugiperda. Two non-Bt corn hybrids and three Bt-hybrids, some of them with glyphosate tolerance (GT), were evaluated. Food preference of larvae and biological parameters were assessed. Oviposition preference bioassays involved choice and no choice condition in plants uninfested and previously infeste

Study of the allergenic potential of Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ac toxin following intra-gastric administration in a murine model of food-allergy.

Cry1Ac toxin, from Bacillus thuringiensis, is widely used as a biopesticide and expressed in genetically modified (GM) plants used for human and animal consumption. Since Cry1Ac is also immunogenic and able to activate macrophages, it is crucial to thoroughly evaluate the immunological effects elicited after intra-gastric administration. The allergenic potential of purified Cry1Ac was assessed and compared with that induced in a murine model of food-allergy to ovalbumin (OVA), in which animals are sensitized with the adjuvant Cholera toxin (CT). Mice were weekly intragastrically administered w

Lactic acid bacteria: reviewing the potential of a promising delivery live vector for biomedical purposes.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have a long history of safe exploitation by humans, being used for centuries in food production and preservation and as probiotic agents to promote human health. Interestingly, some species of these Gram-positive bacteria, which are generally recognized as safe organisms by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are able to survive through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), being capable to reach and colonize the intestine, where they play an important role. Besides, during the last decades, an important effort has been done for the development of tools to use LAB

Development of Antisense Oligonucleotide Gapmers for the Treatment of Dyslipidemia and Lipodystrophy.

Although technological advances in molecular genetics over the last few decades have greatly expedited the identification of mutations in many genetic diseases, the translation of the genetic mechanisms into a clinical setting has been quite challenging, with a minimum number of effective treatments available. The advancements in antisense therapy have revolutionized the field of neuromuscular disorders as well as lipid-mediated diseases. With the approval of splice-switching antisense oligonucleotide (AO) therapy for nusinersen and eteplirsen for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)

Changes in food choices and dietary patterns during the lifestyle intervention and their association with type 2 diabetes risk in participants with high or low genetic risk for type 2 diabetes.

PURPOSE: To investigate how a group-based lifestyle intervention affects food choices and if the dietary patterns at the end of the intervention are associated with incidence type 2 diabetes (T2D). We also investigated if the possible associations between diet and T2D risk were modified by the genetic risk for T2D. METHODS: Participants in the T2D-GENE study were men with prediabetes aged 50-75 years, body mass index  ≥ 25 kg/m2, belonging in either low or high genetic risk score (GRS) tertile for T2D. They participated in a 3 year, group-based T2D-GENE lifestyle study (either an intervention

Mercury toxicity, molecular response and tolerance in higher plants.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in soils has become a great concern as a result of its natural release and anthropogenic activities. This review presents broad aspects of our recent understanding of mercury contamination and toxicology in plants including source of Hg contamination, toxicology, tolerant regulation in plants, and minimization strategy. We first introduced the sources of mercury contamination in soils. Mercury exists in different forms, but ionic mercury (Hg(2+)) is the predominant form in soils and readily absorbed by plants. The second issue to be discussed is the uptake, transport

From designer babies to edited food: comparing public attitudes toward CRISPR technology and gene editing in Japan and the United States.

The perception of bioethics is said to vary based on culture and religion, and research has often been confined to specific topics such as genome-edited babies. In this study, four different scenarios using CRISPR technology and gene editing (designer babies, de novo embryo production, crop improvement, and malaria mosquito control) were presented to measure the attitudes of people in Japan and the United States. The most influential demographic factor was age, with older individuals in both countries expressing greater concern. In the United States, the higher the educational level and annual

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and the safety of milk from Canadian dairy cattle.

The detection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in beef cattle closed Canadian beef export markets to 30 countries, including the USA, with devastating financial losses. The detection and confirmation of the fifth and seventh BSE-infected animals but first infected dairy cows extended the problem of risk management to Canadian dairy farmers. As the public are concerned about the safety not only of beef but also of milk and milk products that may contain disease-causing prions, this review examines the evidence for the safety of milk from studies on prions in milk or colostrum and their

Update of the list of QPS-recommended biological agents intentionally added to food or feeds as notified to EFSA.

The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) process was developed to provide a harmonised safety assessment approach to support EFSA Scientific Panels and Units. The QPS approach assesses the taxonomic identity, body of relevant knowledge and safety concerns of microorganisms intentionally added to the food and feed chain. Safety concerns identified for a taxonomic unit (TU) are, where possible, reflected by 'qualifications' that should be assessed at the strain level by EFSA's Scientific Panels. In total, 340 notifications were received between October 2022 and September 2025, of which, 190 wer

The roles of MHC class II genes and post-translational modification in celiac disease.

Our increasing understanding of the etiology of celiac disease, previously considered a simple food hypersensitivity disorder caused by an immune response to cereal gluten proteins, challenges established concepts of autoimmunity. HLA is a chief genetic determinant, and certain HLA-DQ allotypes predispose to the disease by presenting posttranslationally modified (deamidated) gluten peptides to CD4+ T cells. The deamidation of gluten peptides is mediated by transglutaminase 2. Strikingly, celiac disease patients generate highly disease-specific autoantibodies to the transglutaminase 2 enzyme. T

Modification effects of physical activity and protein intake on heritability of body size and composition.

BACKGROUND: The development of obesity is still a poorly understood process that is dependent on both genetic and environmental factors. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine how physical activity and the proportion of energy as protein in the diet modify the genetic variation of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and percentage body fat. DESIGN: Twins from Denmark (756 complete pairs) and Finland (278 complete pairs) aged 18-67 and 21-24 y, respectively, participated. The proportion of energy as protein in the diet was estimated by using food-frequency questionnaires. The partici

Genetics of Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) in the Indian Ethnicity: An Update.

The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is on the rise alongside other noncommunicable diseases including type-2 diabetes and obesity. It is a continuum of disease that starts with simple infiltration of fat in the liver and may progress to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recently the US Food and Drug Administration approved a drug (Rezdiffra/resmetirom) for the treatment of adults with noncirrhotic, MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. This is the only approved drug for the co

Mu Opioid Receptors in Gamma-Aminobutyric Acidergic Forebrain Neurons Moderate Motivation for Heroin and Palatable Food.

BACKGROUND: Mu opioid receptors (MORs) are central to pain control, drug reward, and addictive behaviors, but underlying circuit mechanisms have been poorly explored by genetic approaches. Here we investigate the contribution of MORs expressed in gamma-aminobutyric acidergic forebrain neurons to major biological effects of opiates, and also challenge the canonical disinhibition model of opiate reward. METHODS: We used Dlx5/6-mediated recombination to create conditional Oprm1 mice in gamma-aminobutyric acidergic forebrain neurons. We characterized the genetic deletion by histology, electrophys

[Elements of epidemiology and initiation of carcinogenesis in carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract. Future therapeutic consequence?].

The study of epidemiology and of the carcinogenesis in epidermoid carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract shows that their occurrence is not random. Tobacco abuse plays a major role, especially because of benzopyrene, mutagen of the P53 gene, however it is associated with many other potentiating factors: alcohol, metals, hydrocarbures, virus, food, climate, genetic fragility that create genetic lesions at the origin of carcinogenesis. The latter occurs as "field cancerization" with multiple alterations of the mucosa and general attack of the control systems of the differentiation, growth a

SAT1-Induced Spermidine Depletion Potentiates Food Allergy.

Food allergies affect over 8% of children globally, with a 3.5-fold increase in incidence in the past two decades. However, disease-modifying therapies remain limited due to incomplete understanding of the underlying metabolic mechanisms. Thus, in this study, we aimed to demonstrate if spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SAT1)-mediated spermidine depletion drives food allergy pathogenesis through a previously unrecognized metabolic-immunological axis. Using a peanut allergy mouse model complemented by additional food allergen systems, we show that spermidine levels are significantly redu

Genetic Engineering and Encapsulation Strategies for Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Enhanced Functionalities and Delivery: Recent Advances and Future Approaches.

This review addresses the recent advances made through various genetic engineering techniques to improve the properties of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, not only for industrial applications, but also for the health-related benefits. However, due to the strict regulations on microorganisms intended for human consumption, concerning the insufficient characterization degree of the newly isolated strains and the lack of data regarding the safety of the genetically modified (GM) variants, the feasibility of bringing such L. rhamnosus strains to the market and their safety prospects were evaluated.

Treating patients with geographic atrophy: are we there yet?

Geographic atrophy (GA) is a progressive degenerative disease that significantly contributes to visual impairment in individuals aged 50 years and older. The development of GA is influenced by various modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, including age, smoking, and specific genetic variants, particularly those related to the complement system regulators. Given the multifactorial and complex nature of GA, several treatment approaches have been explored, such as complement inhibition, gene therapy, and cell therapy. The recent approval by the Food and Drug Administration of pegcetacoplan,
