OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecurity (FI) among families living in rural and urban areas of Brazil.
METHODS: Cross-sectional and descriptive study based on the analysis of two nationally representative surveys conducted using probabilistic sampling by clusters in urban and rural areas of Brazil (2020 and 2022). FI was measured using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. The households were classified as food secure, mild FI, or moderate/severe FI. Prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and analyses were performed in Stata 16 considering the resp

Lower executive functioning is associated with more reactive, coercive general parenting practices. Parents who experience poverty, a chronic stressor, may have compromised executive functioning that impacts parenting practices, but less is known about the impact on parent feeding practices. This study examined associations between maternal executive functioning and feeding practices among families living in low-income contexts. Participants included 137 mothers of children enrolled in Head Start who completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version, Child Feeding Que

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity (FI) and social isolation (SI) are interconnected social determinants of health that disproportionately affect older adults. While FI and SI have been studied independently, their combined effects on malnutrition and quality of life (QoL) have not been adequately synthesized. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combined FI and SI interventions over the past decade, identify reported facilitators and barriers, and explore technology-based approaches to inform future research.
METHODS: This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for System

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, particularly depression. However, there is a paucity of community-based studies investigating this association, especially in southern India. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of food insecurity and examine its association with depressive symptoms among adults in a rural village in Telangana, India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 537 participants aged 18-60 years from Moinabad village using a multistage cluster sampling technique. Food insecurity was assessed using the Food

BACKGROUND: Social isolation (SI) and food insecurity (FI) are important social determinants of health that can negatively impact well-being in old age. While research on the association between FI and SI is limited in LMICs, the mediators of this association are largely unknown. This cross-sectional study examined whether FI is associated with SI among older adults in Ghana and whether psychological factors (i.e., depression, anxiety, and sleep problems) mediated the association.
METHODS: Our study consisted of adults aged ≥50 years in the Aging, Health, Well-being, and Health-seeking Behavi

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the correlation between overactive bladder (OAB) and food insecurity.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis utilizing extensive population data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018. The status of Household food insecurity is evaluated by the US Food Security Survey Module. To explore the relationship between food insecurity and OAB, three multivariable logistic regression models were carried out. Additionally, interaction and stratified analyses were also performed to find whether some factors have the pot

This study examined the association between food insecurity and both binge eating and unhealthy weight-control behaviors (UWCBs) and assessed whether such associations differ by factors within the family environment. Data were collected from a diverse sample of adolescents (Mage = 14.5 years; 54.1% female) and their parents/guardians (N = 2137 dyads) participating in EAT 2010 (Eating and Activity over Time). Food-insecure adolescents were more likely to report binge eating (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.41-2.69) and UWCBs (PR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.21-1.49) than food

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is an increasingly recognized public health issue. Identifying risk factors for food insecurity would support public health initiatives to provide targeted nutrition interventions to high-risk individuals. Food insecurity has not been investigated in the orthopedic trauma population.
METHODS: From April 27, 2021 to June 23, 2021, we surveyed patients within six months of operative pelvic and/or extremity fracture fixation at a single institution. Food insecurity was assessed using the validated United States Department of Agriculture Household Food Insecurity quest

AIMS: The primary objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of existing literature on the association between food insecurity and housing instability with CVD and its subtypes-related outcomes. Summarizing the comprehensive evidence for independent/interchangeable relationship of food and housing instability with CVD outcomes may inform specific interventions strategies to reduce CVD-risk.
DATA SYNTHESIS: The search focused on English-language articles in PubMed/Medline, from January 1, 2010, to June 1, 2021, with restriction to the US adult population. We included studies est

To examine the relationship between food and housing insecurity and the continuation of breastfeeding, interviews were conducted with 203 birthing parents in English or Spanish. The study was conducted between August 2019 and March 2021 in the southeastern U.S. The breastfeeding rate among participants was 52%. Multivariate analysis indicated that birthing parents experiencing housing insecurity were less likely to be breastfeeding at 4 months of infant's age (p = 0.019). Future research is warranted to understand how housing insecurity might contribute to the discontinuation of breastfeeding

Background The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends routine screening and resource provision for food insecurity (FI). The authors describe documentation of FI, as well as social, developmental, and health care utilization characteristics, among patients with and without FI in a pediatric clinic. Methods This data-only case-control study describes patients with and without FI seen by pediatricians who identified at least 10 patients with FI between January 2019 and January 2020. Controls were seen by the same pediatrician on the same day, matched 2:1 with cases. Chart review identified FI

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a social determinant of health associated with cognitive impairments in older adults and people living with HIV (PLWH). Few studies have examined this relation longitudinally, and no studies have explored how the frequency of food insecurity over time may impact cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the impact of food insecurity on cognitive impairment over a 2-y follow-up period in a cohort of people living with and without HIV.
METHODS: This was a 2-y longitudinal analysis of primarily economically disadvantaged, middle-aged, Black, and

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to determine the association between food insecurity, mental health, and sleep outcomes among young adults. Young adulthood represents an important developmental period when educational and economic transitions may increase the risk for food insecurity; however, little is known about associations between food insecurity and health outcomes in this period.
METHODS: Cross-sectional nationally representative data of U.S. young adults aged 24-32 years from Wave IV (2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were analyzed in 2018. Multi

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, the uncertain ability to access adequate food, can limit adherence to dietary measures needed to prevent and manage cardiometabolic conditions. However, little is known about temporal trends in food insecurity among those with diet-sensitive cardiometabolic conditions.
METHODS: We used data from the Continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2012, analyzed in 2015-2016, to calculate trends in age-standardized rates of food insecurity for those with and without the following diet-sensitive cardiometabolic conditions: diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is strongly associated with mental health and also varies by demographic group but the role that socio-demography plays in shaping the relationship between food insecurity and mental health remains under-researched, particularly in the United Kingdom where food insecurity is an escalating public health emergency. This article explores how socio-demographic characteristics - specifically, income, parenting, and ethnicity - shape the lived experience of food insecurity and mental health in the UK.
METHODS: A diverse sample of 62 people living on a low income in Engla

INTRODUCTION: The Hunger Vital Sign (HVS) is a two-item, validated food insecurity screener recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Given its brevity, HVS could be useful in assessing food insecurity in pregnant populations, for whom high-quality nutrition and food access is essential. However, the HVS has not been evaluated in obstetric settings. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the performance of the HVS compared to the gold standard, the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) among low-income, urban pregnant people.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study at a mult
