A comparison of haemolytic responses in fore-foot and rear-foot distance runners.

This study examined the haemolytic effects of an interval-based running task in fore-foot and rear-foot striking runners. Nineteen male distance runners (10 fore-foot, 9 rear-foot) completed 8 × 3 min repeats at 90% vVO2peak on a motorised treadmill. Pre- and post-exercise venous blood samples were analysed for serum haptoglobin to quantify the haemolytic response to running. Vertical ground reaction forces were also captured via a force plate beneath the treadmill belt. Haptoglobin levels were significantly decreased following exercise (P = 0.001) in both groups (but not between groups), sugg

The role of foot morphology on foot function in diabetic subjects with or without neuropathy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of foot morphology, related with respect to diabetes and peripheral neuropathy in altering foot kinematics and plantar pressure during gait. Healthy and diabetic subjects with or without neuropathy with different foot types were analyzed. Three dimensional multisegment foot kinematics and plantar pressures were assessed on 120 feet: 40 feet (24 cavus, 20 with valgus heel and 11 with hallux valgus) in the control group, 80 feet in the diabetic (25 cavus 13 with valgus heel and 13 with hallux valgus) and the neuropathic groups (28 cavus, 24 with

Correlation of foot radiographs with foot function as analyzed by plantar pressure distribution.

The goal of this study was to correlate radiographic measurements to the dynamic plantar pressure of the residual clubfoot. This was done by comparing radiographs and EMED plantar pressure results in 61 idiopathic clubfeet in 39 children at an average of 8 years after complete subtalar release. Radiographic measures were obtained using the standard method outlined by Simons, and pressure data were collected for eight regions of the foot. Pearson correlation analysis was performed and the most significant correlation was found between the calcaneal/first metatarsal angle in the lateral radiogra

The effect of foot deformities on the interplay of forces within the foot: An analysis of multi-segment foot joint moments in cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Foot deformities are common in cerebral palsy (CP) and are likely caused by a disturbed interplay of forces in the foot. Evaluation of foot joint moments would therefore be highly relevant. However, kinetic foot models have not previously been applied to children with CP. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the difference in multi-segment foot joint moments between children with CP with foot deformities and children with typically developing (TD) feet? METHODS: Children with spastic paresis were retrospectively included and compared to TD children. All children underwent clinical gait ana

Accuracy of a foot temperature monitoring mat for predicting diabetic foot ulcers in patients with recent wounds or partial foot amputation.

AIMS: To assess the accuracy of once-daily foot temperature monitoring for predicting foot ulceration in diabetic patients with recent wounds and partial foot amputation, complications previously perceived as challenging. METHODS: We completed a planned analysis of existing data from a recent study in 129 participants with a previously-healed diabetic foot ulcer. We considered four cohorts: all participants, participants with partial foot amputation, participants with a recent wound, and participants without partial foot amputation and without a recent wound. We reported the prediction specif

Custom Ankle-Foot Orthosis in Foot Drop: Influence on Body Joints Kinematics.

Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) are external supports typically prescribed in clinical practice to address foot drop deficits. Lower limb orthoses have been shown to have positive effects on spatio-temporal gait metrics, while the impact on body joint kinematics is less clear and varies in the literature. The objective of this study is to investigate the presence of a common movement pattern in body joints that compensates for the foot drop deficit. The study focuses on the trunk, knee, and hip joints. Eight patients with unilateral foot drop participated in walking trials on an instrumented treadm

Reliability of peak foot pressure in patients with previous diabetic foot ulceration.

BACKGROUND: Previous reliability studies on peak plantar pressure measurements in patients with previous diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) did not stratify their analyses according to whether the foot had a previous ulcer. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does test-retest reliability of peak foot pressure measurements from the various foot regions differ between the ulcerated and non-ulcerated feet? METHODS: Data from 23 participants with peripheral neuropathy and healed plantar DFU were analysed in this test-retest reliability comparison study. Plantar pressure was evaluated on two sessions using Pedar®-X i

Parametric study of orthopedic insole of valgus foot on partial foot amputation.

Orthopedic insole was important for partial foot amputation (PFA) to achieve foot balance and avoid foot deformity. The inapposite insole orthosis was thought to be one of the risk factors of reamputation for foot valgus patient, but biomechanical effects of internal tissues on valgus foot had not been clearly addressed. In this study, plantar pressure on heel and metatarsal regions of PFA was measured using F-Scan. The three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of partial foot evaluated different medial wedge angles (MWAs) (0.0°-10.0°) of orthopedic insole on valgus foot. The effect of ortho

Foot type biomechanics part 1: structure and function of the asymptomatic foot.

BACKGROUND: Differences in foot structure are thought to be associated with differences in foot function during movement. Many foot pathologies are of a biomechanical nature and often associated with foot type. Fundamental to the understanding of foot pathomechanics is the question: do different foot types have distinctly different structure and function? AIM: To determine if objective measures of foot structure and function differ between planus, rectus and cavus foot types in asymptomatic individuals. METHODS: Sixty-one asymptomatic healthy adults between 18 and 77 years old, that had the

Natural gaits of the non-pathological flat foot and high-arched foot.

There has been a controversy as to whether or not the non-pathological flat foot and high-arched foot have an effect on human walking activities. The 3D foot scanning system was employed to obtain static footprints from subjects adopting a half-weight-bearing stance. Based upon their footprints, the subjects were divided into two groups: the flat-footed and the high-arched. The plantar pressure measurement system was used to measure and record the subjects' successive natural gaits. Two indices were proposed: distribution of vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) of plantar and the rate of chan

Dynamics of below-knee child amputee gait: SACH foot versus Flex foot.

Gait kinematics and dynamics during stance of unilateral, below-knee child amputees were analyzed for self-selected, comfortable (0.9 m s-1) and fast (1.3 m s-1) speeds with the SACH foot and the energy-storing Flex-foot prostheses. The three-dimensional movements of the lower limbs were recorded and synchronized with ground reaction forces for 12 subjects (7 girls and 5 boys, ages 6-16 yr). Each lower limb was modeled as a set of interconnected rigid links (thigh, leg, and foot) with frictionless joints (hip, knee, and ankle) to calculate moment and joint power profiles. Marked asymmetries we

Assessment of foot disorders using biomechanical analysis of foot loads during locomotion.

The aim of this study was to investigate techniques for assessment of surgical procedures for foot disorders. An optoelectronic system was used to obtain position data during walking for the knee joint, ankle joint and the second metatarsal joint. The ground reaction forces were simultaneously measured and the moment of force at the mentioned joints were analysed. Pressure transducers in the shoe were used to measure the local pressure at the great toe, first and fifth metatarsal heads, and heel pad. Among studied procedures were Keller's operation for hallux rigidus and distal oblique osteoto
