BACKGROUND: In neuromuscular diseases, limb lengthening and foot deformity correction are associated with a high risk of complications associated with distraction callus and joint contracture. We have found no published articles of tibial lengthening and concomitant foot deformity correction using the Ilizarov method or traditional methods. To compare result of gradual distraction with triple arthrodesis for foot deformity combined with tibial lengthening, we investigated healing index and complications of two methods.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 14 patients with permanent deformity aft

Carbon fiber deformable foot orthoses (DFOs) with customizable stiffness may benefit clinical populations by allowing an individual approach to enhancing gait energetics. Prior research suggests that increasing DFO stiffness can decrease energy loss while enhancing energy return at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, making it more spring-like. However, it remains unclear whether increasing DFO stiffness enhances the mechanics of the midtarsal and ankle joints or only the MTP joint, especially during walking. This study investigated whether walking with increasingly stiff DFOs impacted mechan

BACKGROUNDS: Pediatric foot deformities disrupt biomechanics and can lead to long-term musculoskeletal complications. Radiographic parameters, particularly the anteroposterior talo-1st metatarsal angle (AP talo-1MT), are widely used; however, their accuracy may be compromised in the presence of hallux valgus. The clinical utility of the anteroposterior talo-2nd metatarsal angle (AP talo-2MT) has not been well established. This study evaluated radiographic parameters by correlating them with pedobarographic indices, hypothesizing that AP talo-2MT would demonstrate comparable or superior functio

Ankle-foot deformities, such as clubfoot, pose treatment challenges due to complex and patient-specific biomechanics. Accurate assessment of muscle force behavior is essential for tailoring interventions, yet conventional gait analysis is limited in isolating muscle-specific function. Intraoperative force measurements via the muscle's tendon offer a unique opportunity to directly quantify muscle mechanics. This study aimed to characterize the passive and active force-angle relationship of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle, intraoperatively. Ten patients (ages 3-62) undergoing corrective foot s

INTRODUCTION: Clubfoot is the most common deformity seen in children with arthrogryposis. The primary method of treatment for this deformity is serial casting, which has a greater frequency of incomplete correction and recurrence than in idiopathic clubfoot. For both primary and recurring cases, surgical treatments vary from soft-tissue releases to talectomy. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of bony surgical procedures in correcting clubfoot in ambulatory children with arthrogryposis.
METHODS: The study retrospectively examined ambulatory children with arthrogryposis, all of

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and the presence of hallux valgus and flat feet.
METHOD: This retrospective study analyzed KOA patients from January 2022 to March 2024, investigating the correlation between KOA and hallux valgus and flatfoot. The diagnosis of KOA and assessment of its symptoms were conducted using the diagnostic criteria and grading system established by the American College of Rheumatology, specifically the Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grading system and measurement of the femorotibial angle (FTA). Physical examination, weight-bearing X

Neurologic foot contractures pose a challenging situation for orthopaedic surgeons. These deformities are long-standing problems for patients with acute brain injuries, ultimately affecting their quality of life. We report our experience with using arthroscopic assisted, minimally invasive contracture tenotomies paired with a tibio-talo-calcaneal arthrodesis to achieve improved alignment and functional reconstruction of spastic equinovarus foot deformities.

INTRODUCTION: Foot deformities are frequent complications in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) patients, often requiring orthopedic surgery. However, there are no prospective, randomized studies on surgical management, and there is variation in the approaches among centers both within and between countries.
METHODS: In this study we assessed the frequency of foot deformities and surgery among patients recruited into the Inherited Neuropathies Consortium (INC). We also designed a survey addressed to orthopedic surgeons at INC centers to determine whether surgical approaches to orthopedic compl

In the last decade treatment of foot deformities has changed from extensive surgery to casting and minimally invasive surgery. The Ponseti method has become the most preferred treatment for clubfoot deformities and early evaluations showed promising results. Mid-term results for idiopathic clubfoot revealed the need for additional surgery by anterior tibial tendon transfer in 11-32% of cases depending on the duration of bracing. Anterior tibial tendon transfer is the most important surgical procedure for relapses in the Ponseti concept. Casting, recasting in cases of relapses, bracing and ante

OBJECTIVE: To study surgical strategies for ankle and foot deformities secondary to spina bifida and treatment methods for different types of deformities.
METHODS: From January 1990 and July 2009, 107 patients with ankle and foot deformities secondary to spina bifida were retrospectively analyzed. There were 44 males and 63 females, with an average age of 17.7 years (rangd from 1.3 to 52 years). Among the patients, 58 patients had double ankle deformities, 49 patients had unilateral deformities (22 cases on the left side, 27 cases on the right). Ninety-nine patients with equinus deformities w

BACKGROUND: Qualitative assessments of standing plain radiographs are frequently used to determine treatment strategies and assess outcomes for the management of a wide range of foot and ankle conditions in children. A quantitative technique for such analyses would presumably be more precise and reliable. The goal of this study was to compare qualitative and quantitative techniques for the assessment of plain radiographs of the foot and ankle in children with hemiplegic type cerebral palsy (CP).
METHODS: Standing anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the foot and ankle of the involved si

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the clinical evidence of foot deformities in spina bifida occulta and the associated neurophysio-logical damage.
METHODS: The authors studied 47 patients with foot deformities (37 flat foot, 10 pes cavus) and vertebral cleft, variably associated with enuresis, midline cutaneous lesions, and further orthopaedic deformities. An electrophysiological evaluation was performed in an attempt to investigate the peripheral nervous system in greater detail, including conventional motor and sensory nerve conduction, F-wave recording a

External fixators have been used effectively for a variety of traumatic, congenital, and neuromuscular conditions of the lower extremity for many decades. The transition to management of Charcot foot and ankle deformities in the diabetic neuropathic patient is a logical application. External fixation can address the unique challenges in the Charcot foot, including osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, wound healing, and compliance issues. The author's experience has lead to abandoning other methods of fixation in favor of external fixation for most infected and noninfected Charcot deformities of the fo

In correcting foot deformities the author observed a constant relationship between the forefoot and the hindfoot. If the forefoot is adducted, the heel automatically goes into the varus position. On the other hand, abduction of the forefoot will result in a valgus position of the heel. This rule was investigared and validified by experiments on cadavers: it was shown that the position of the hindfoot is automatically normalized by the correction of the forefoot. Our observations have been confirmed by treating foot deformities in children and adults. Therefore we believe that surgery of the ta

BACKGROUND: Progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is a painful and function-limiting condition most commonly affecting middle-aged and older adults. Although custom foot orthoses (CFOs) are routinely prescribed as a conservative intervention, evidence from large clinical cohorts remains limited. This study aimed to characterise patients with PCFD seeking orthotic care, examine demographic factors associated with pain improvement, evaluate clinical and self-reported outcomes following CFO use, and explore potential interaction effects of CFOs on clinical improvement across sex.

BACKGROUND: Subtalar middle facet (MF) subluxation was recognized as a reliable marker for progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) diagnosis. Foot and Ankle Offset (FAO) is an established measurement, predictive of malalignment severity. The objective of this study was to assess the potential association between MF subluxation and FAO in PCFD patients.
METHODS: 56 individuals with flexible PCFD (74 feet) were assessed. Two blinded foot and ankle surgeons calculated MF uncoverage, MF incongruence, and FAO. Agreement was quantified using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). A multivar
