Evaluating bromeliads as environmental reservoirs for Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and amphibian disease dynamics in equatorial forests.

The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is widely distributed across tropical ecosystems, yet the microhabitats that facilitate its environmental persistence remain poorly understood. We evaluated Bd detection in bromeliad tank contents and infection in amphibian communities across an elevational gradient in Ecuadorian forests. We sampled amphibians at eight sites using skin swabs, and canopy and subcanopy bromeliads at five sites using eDNA. Overall, Bd prevalence was 23.0% in amphibians and 11.3% in bromeliads. Subcanopy bromeliads showed a significantly lower probab

Disturbance Mosaics Shape Multiple Pollinator Taxa Across Spatial and Temporal Scales in Fire-Managed Forests.

Because forests are critical to a large fraction of global pollinator diversity, there is great interest in better understanding how changes in forest cover, structure, and composition affect these essential organisms. Fire is one of the key drivers of such changes worldwide, yet the effects of variation in fire regimes on pollinator communities remain poorly understood. We tested how fire history, roads, and tree composition jointly influence the richness, abundance, assemblage composition, and trait structure of bees, butterflies, and hover flies in a fire-managed forest landscape in the sou

Adaptive silviculture for climate change in North American forests: Operationalizing the resistance-resilience-transition framework.

The impacts of global climate change have compelled forest managers to evaluate their practices and ecosystems, considering when and how to resist change, promote resilience, or facilitate transitions. Forest adaptation has made significant strides to move from theory to practice over the last two decades, with widespread examples of intentional, thoughtful, explicit adaptation. However, very few of these examples exist within a research framework, and their underlying theories of change are unlikely to be rigorously tested. The Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) Network addresses

Papiliomyces australis sp. nov. (Clavicipitaceae), infecting lepidopteran hepialid larvae in temperate forests of southern Chile.

Papiliomyces is a recently described genus of Cordyceps-like entomopathogens known to date only from Asia and typically associated with soil-dwelling ghost moth larvae (Hepialidae, Lepidoptera). Here we describe Papiliomyces australis sp. nov. from temperate Nothofagus forests in southern Chile, representing the first confirmed report of the genus in the Americas. The fungus was collected from buried hepialid larvae and isolated in culture. Stromata are cream to greyish white with immersed perithecia; asci are cylindrical with a distinct apical cap; ascospores are filiform, multiseptate and do

Assembly processes and ecological network patterns of multitrophic soil mite communities in karst primary forests.

Multitrophic interactions are essential for understanding the mechanisms that sustain the local coexistence of diverse soil organisms. Although stable-isotope evidence has revealed clear trophic niche differentiation among mites, co-occurrence network patterns and assembly mechanisms across trophic groups remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a comprehensive survey of soil mites across four forest types along an elevational gradient in the Shibing World Natural Heritage Site. We aimed to elucidate the community assembly processes and ecological network complexity of predators, fungal fe

Enhancing short-term predictions of mortality risk for liver transplant candidates through random survival forests.

MELD-based scores do not fully account for systemic and metabolic risk in liver transplant candidates, with notable gaps for those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In this retrospective, outcome-anchored, single-center proof-of-concept study, we analyzed adult patients listed for liver transplantation at our institute from 2004 to 2025. We analyzed clinical and laboratory data collected 3-12 months prior to death, transplantation, or censoring, focusing on advanced disease stages. Exclusion criteria included hepatocellular carcinoma and incomplete MELD 3.0

Increased Soil Nitrogen Availability Suppresses Annual Soil Respiration in Mixed Temperate Forests Regardless of Acidification.

Soil respiration (Rsoil) is the second largest terrestrial carbon (C) flux, and therefore, it is imperative to understand and quantify its responses to global environmental change. Rsoil consists of two component CO2 fluxes: autotrophic respiration from the metabolic activity of roots (Ra-root) and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) derived from the metabolic activity of mycorrhizal fungi and microbial decomposition of detritus, soil organic matter, and rhizodeposits. Increased nitrogen (N) availability often reduces Rsoil in forest ecosystems, but it remains unclear which contributing fluxes gove

Rewetting drained boreal peatland forests does not mitigate climate warming in the twenty-first century.

Rewetting drained peatland forests restores pristine ecosystem functions, improves peatland ecological status, and has been considered to mitigate climate change. We quantified climate impact of rewetting boreal peatland forests in Northern Europe by comparing the radiative forcing of alternative restoration pathways to that of continued forestry use. We considered changes in soil carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide balance, tree stand carbon sink-source dynamics, albedo change, and included the wood product carbon storage and release. We show that restoring nutrient-rich drained boreal

Responses of soil organic carbon compounds to phosphorus addition between tropical monoculture and multispecies forests.

Tropical forests are sensitive to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability, and under nutrient application the variation of soil organic carbon (SOC) preserving mechanism remains to be explored. To reveal the forest-specific SOC preservation via biochemical selection in response to nutrient application, we investigated a monoculture (Acacia plantation) and a multispecies forest both with chronic fertilization in subtropical regions, and measured specific fingerprints of plant- and microbial-derived C compounds. In addition, to quantify the effect of P application on SOC content among tropi

Historical ecology identifies long-term rewilding strategy for conserving Mediterranean mountain forests in south Italy.

In the context of global decline in old-growth forest, historical ecology is a valuable tool to derive insights into vegetation legacies and dynamics and develop new conservation and restoration strategies. In this cross-disciplinary study, we integrate palynology (Lago del Pesce record), history, dendrochronology, and historical and contemporary land cover maps to assess drivers of vegetation change over the last millennium in a Mediterranean mountain forest (Pollino National Park, southern Italy) and discuss implications in conservation ecology. The study site hosts a remnant beech-fir (Fagu

Effects of nitrogen deposition on soil microbial communities in temperate and subtropical forests in China.

Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition has aroused large concerns because of its potential negative effects on forest ecosystems. Although microorganisms play a vital role in ecosystem carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, the effect of N deposition on soil microbiota still remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the responses of microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) and microbial community composition to 4-5years of experimentally simulated N deposition in temperate needle-leaf forests and subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests in eastern China, using chloroform fumigation extraction and phos

Light-driven growth in Amazon evergreen forests explained by seasonal variations of vertical canopy structure.

Light-regime variability is an important limiting factor constraining tree growth in tropical forests. However, there is considerable debate about whether radiation-induced green-up during the dry season is real, or an apparent artifact of the remote-sensing techniques used to infer seasonal changes in canopy leaf area. Direct and widespread observations of vertical canopy structures that drive radiation regimes have been largely absent. Here we analyze seasonal dynamic patterns between the canopy and understory layers in Amazon evergreen forests using observations of vertical canopy structure

Infection of Ixodes ricinus by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in peri-urban forests of France.

Lyme borreliosis is the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. In Europe, it is transmitted by Ixodes ticks that carry bacteria belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. The objective of this work was to explore eco-epidemiological factors of Lyme borreliosis in peri-urban forests of France (Sénart, Notre-Dame and Rambouillet). We investigated whether the introduction of Tamias sibiricus in Sénart could alter the density of infected ticks. Moreover, the density and tick infection were investigated according to the tree species found in various patches of Sén

Spatio-temporal analysis of Xyleborus glabratus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae [corrected] Scolytinae) invasion in eastern U.S. forests.

The non-native redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), has recently emerged as a significant pest of southeastern U.S. coastal forests. Specifically, a fungal symbiont (Raffaelea sp.) of X. glabratus has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia) and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) trees in the region; several other Lauraceae species also seem susceptible. Although the range of X. glabratus continues to expand rapidly, little is known about the species' biology and behavior. In turn, there has been no broad-scale assessment of the threat it

Source profiles of organic compounds emitted upon combustion of green vegetation from temperate climate forests.

Biomass burning is an important primary source of particles containing biomarker compounds, which are introduced into smoke primarily by direct volatilization/steam stripping and by thermal alteration based on combustion conditions. This study presents comprehensive organic compound source profiles for smoke from controlled burning of green vegetation native to the predominant temperate and semiarid forests of the western United States. Smoke particles were extracted with dichloromethane/methanol (2:1, v/v), and the extracts were analyzed as their TMS derivatives by gas chromatography-mass spe

Resource availability and the abundance of an N-based defense in Australian tropical rain forests.

Plant defense theories predict that relatively resource-rich environments (those with more fertile soil) will support a greater abundance of plants with nitrogen-based chemical defense, but this has yet to be adequately tested. We tested this prediction by measuring the diversity and contribution to total biomass of cyanogenic plants (those that release hydrogen cyanide from endogenous cyanide-containing compounds) in the Australian tropical rain forest. We examined 401 species in thirty 200-m2 plots, six at each of five sites, for cyanogenesis. In upland/highland rain forest, two pairs of sit

Preemptive and salvage harvesting of New England forests: when doing nothing is a viable alternative.

One unexpected consequence of natural disturbances in forested areas is that managers often initiate activities that may impose greater ecosystem impacts than the disturbances themselves. By salvage logging areas affected by windstorms or other impacts, by harvesting host trees in advance of insect infestation or disease, or by preemptively harvesting forests in an attempt to improve their resilience to future disturbances and stresses, managers initiate substantial changes in the ecosystem structure and function. Much of this activity is undertaken in the absence of information on the qualita

Impact of habitat degradation on phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) of tropical dry forests in Northern Colombia.

We examined changes in the phlebotomine fauna resulting from human intervention in a tropical dry forest of Northern Colombia where visceral and cutaneous leishmaniases are endemic. A natural forest reserve (Colosó) and a highly degraded area (San Andrés de Sotavento [SAS]) were sampled monthly for 8 mo using Shannon traps, sticky traps, and resting-site collections. Overall abundances were higher in Colosó (15,988) than in SAS (2,324). and species richness of phlebotomines was greater in the forest reserve (11 species) than in the degraded habitat (seven species). Trypanosomatid species infecting bats in the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station, an urban forested fragment in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trypanosomatids (Protozoa; Kinetoplastea) are obligate parasitic protozoans that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including bats - the only volant mammals, widely distributed across the globe. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Atlantic Forest remnants persist within urban landscapes, including the Fiocruz Atlantic Forest Biological Station (EFMA), a unit embedded in a highly urbanized environment. Between 2013 and 2019 (excluding 2015), field surveys were conducted in four landscape physiognomies with different degrees of environmental degradation. Blood and other tissue samples (spleen, live
