Making the message meaningful: a qualitative assessment of media promoting all-terrain vehicle safety.

BACKGROUND: Millions of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) are used around the world for recreation by both adults and youth. This increase in use has led to a substantial increase in the number of injuries and fatalities each year. Effective strategies for reducing this incidence are clearly needed; however, minimal research exists regarding effective educational interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess rural ATV riders' preferences for and assessment of safety messages. METHODS: 13 focus group discussions with youth and adult ATV riders were conducted. 88 formative research part

Simulated patients' perspectives of and perceived role in medical students' professional identity development.

INTRODUCTION: Much has been written about medical students' professional identity formation, the process of "becoming" a doctor. During their training, medical students interact with a range of teachers and trainers. Among these are simulated patients (SPs) who role-play patients, assisting students with their communication, procedural, and physical examination skills. With SPs regularly interacting with students, this qualitative study explored their views of students' emerging professional identities at one Australian medical school. SPs' contributions to developing professional identities w

Too harts, won sole: Using dysgraphia treatment to address homophone representation.

Previous spoken homophone treatment in aphasia found generalization to untreated homophones and interpreted this as evidence for shared phonological word form representations. Previous written treatment of non-homophones has attributed generalization to orthographic neighbours of treated items to feedback from graphemes to similarly spelled orthographic word forms. This feedback mechanism offers an alternative explanation for generalization found in treatment of spoken homophones. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism underpinning generalization (if any) from treatment of writ

Phospho-relay feedback loops control egress vs. intracellular development in Toxoplasma gondii.

The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii alternates between a motile invasive and a quiescent intracellular replicative form, yet how these transitions are regulated is unknown. A positive feedback loop involving protein kinase G (PKG) and calcium-dependent PKs (CDPKs) controls motility, invasion, and egress by Toxoplasma gondii, while PKA isoform c1 (PKAc1) counteracts this pathway. Shortly after invasion, PKAc1 is activated by cyclic AMP (cAMP) produced by adenylate cyclases, leading to the suppression of the PKG/CDPK pathway. PKAc1 further activates phosphodiesterase 2, which selectivel

The Influence of Facial Attractiveness and Advice Feedback on Advisors' Subsequent Willingness to Continue Giving Advice: Evidence from ERPs.

Advice-giving during social interaction is not a one-way flow of information. Instead, it constitutes a dynamic process that includes offering advice, receiving feedback, and adjusting subsequent behaviors. Few studies have examined how advisees' facial attractiveness and feedback type together shape advisors' willingness to keep providing advice, as well as the corresponding neural temporal patterns. In this study, we adopted an advice-giving game paradigm. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) when 28 participants received feedback and made subsequent advice decisions, to explore the i

A Community-Engaged Research Study to Inform Tailored Programming for Smoking Cessation and Lung Cancer Screening Among At-Risk LGBTQ+ Elders.

Purpose. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, with most cases attributable to cigarette smoking. Many communities within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) umbrella have high rates of smoking, but focused lung cancer prevention is limited. Our objective was to utilize a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to guide the development of a program focused on lung cancer prevention in LGBTQ+ elders. Methods. Through community partnerships, we recruited participants who self-identified as LGBTQ+ and were eligible for lung cancer scre

Educating Families on Urgent Maternal Warning Signs: Learning From a Pilot to Improve Training and Tools for Maternal and Child Home Visiting Programs.

Early recognition of the warning signs of pregnancy-related complications and provision of timely, quality care could prevent many maternal deaths. We piloted a maternal warning signs education intervention with five Maryland-based maternal, infant, and early childhood home visiting programs serving populations disproportionately affected by adverse maternal outcomes. The intervention included a 1.5-hr online training for home visitors, monthly collaborative calls with program managers, and a client education toolkit with a 3-min video, illustrated handout of 15 urgent maternal warning signs,

Development and implementation of an e-visit objective structured clinical examination to evaluate student ability to provide care by telehealth.

The provision of care through telehealth is emerging as a strategy to meet the challenges of a changing health care system; however, educational experiences associated with telehealth are limited in nursing curricula. In 2018, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) recommended incorporating telehealth modalities in nurse practitioner education, including clinical skills assessment. Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) have been used as formative and summative evaluations of health science students since the 1970s to assess application of didactic learni

Inflammatory bowel disease: perspectives from cingulate cortex in the first brain.

The article by Agostini et al. (2013) in this issue of Neurogastroenterology and Motility evaluated patients with Crohn's disease (CD) for volumetric changes throughout the brain. They observed decreased gray matter volumes in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC) and disease duration was negatively correlated with volumes in subgenual anterior cingulate (sACC), posterior MCC (pMCC), ventral posterior cingulate (vPCC), and parahippocampal cortices. As all patients were in remission and suffered from ongoing abdominal pain, this study provides a critical link be

Biomedical risk assessment as an aid for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: A possible strategy for increasing smoking cessation rates could be to provide smokers with feedback on the current or potential future biomedical effects of smoking using, for example, measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), lung function, or genetic susceptibility to lung cancer or other diseases. OBJECTIVES: The main objective was to determine the efficacy of providing smokers with feedback on their exhaled CO measurement, spirometry results, atherosclerotic plaque imaging, and genetic susceptibility to smoking-related diseases in helping them to quit smoking. The Brain's Reward Response Occurs Even Without Actual Reward!

What if the brain's response to reward occurs even when there is no reward? Wouldn't that be a further concern for people prone to problem gambling and other forms of addiction, like those related to eating? Electroencephalography was employed to investigate this possibility using probabilistic feedback manipulations and measures of known event-related potentials (ERPs) related to reward processing. We tested the hypothesis-that reward-based ERPs would occur even in the absence of a tangible reward and when manipulations on expectation are implicit. The well-known P300 response potential was a

Sensory feedback - Dependent neural de-orchestration: The effect of altered sensory feedback on Musician's Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder related to extensive expert music performance training. Similar to other forms of focal dystonia, MD involves sensory deficits and abnormal patterns of sensorimotor integration. The present study investigated the impaired cortical sensorimotor network of pianists who suffer from MD by employing altered auditory and tactile feedback during scale playing with multichannel EEG. METHODS: 9 healthy professional pianists and 9 professional pianists suffering from right hand MD participated in an experiment that required repeated

The impact of faculty development interventions on supervisor narrative feedback quality in competency-based medical education.

OBJECTIVES: Improving the feedback that supervisors provide trainees in medical education is challenging. The development of automated methods of rating the quality of narrative feedback has created an opportunity to quantify the impact of interventions focused on this goal. METHODS: We used a previously developed natural language processing model based on the Quality Assessment of Learning (QuAL) score to rate the quality of each comment in our Royal College Emergency Medicine specialty training program from July 2018 to June 2024. We quantified the effectiveness of three faculty development

Development of a GPT-4-Powered Virtual Simulated Patient and Communication Training Platform for Medical Students to Practice Discussing Abnormal Mammogram Results With Patients: Multiphase Study.

BACKGROUND: Standardized patients (SPs) prepare medical students for difficult conversations with patients. Despite their value, SP-based simulation training is constrained by available resources and competing clinical demands. Researchers are turning to artificial intelligence and large language models, such as generative pretrained transformers, to create communication training that incorporates virtual simulated patients (VSPs). GPT-4 is a large language model advance allowing developers to design virtual simulation scenarios using text-based prompts instead of relying on branching path sim
