Stressful life events and experiences may disrupt the typical day-to-day interactions between sisters and brothers that provide the foundation of sibling socialization. This chapter examines four experiences that may affect patterns of sibling interaction: parental marital conflict, parental divorce and remarriage, foster care placement, and a sibling's developmental disability. We propose a model to guide future research on sibling socialization in distressed families and special populations in which qualities of the sibling relationship moderate the effects of stressful life experiences on c

PURPOSE: Childhood adversity, including neglect, affects over 60% of children globally and fundamentally alters developing biological systems, including the cardiometabolic system. While research has established links between early neglect and disease risk, how neglect might disrupt the coherence and organization of cardiometabolic indicators contributing to risk has been overlooked.
METHODS: We examined whether early neglect alters how markers of metabolic functioning cohere and contribute to overall risk-operationalized as the metabolic syndrome (MetS)-among young adults from the Bucharest

The underlying reasons for recantation in children's disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) have been debated in recent years. In the present study, we examined the largest sample of substantiated CSA cases involving recantations to date (n = 58 cases). We specifically matched those cases to 58 nonrecanters on key variables found to predict recantation in prior research (i.e., child age, alleged parent figure perpetrator, and caregiver unsupportiveness). Bivariate analyses revealed that children were less likely to recant when they were (1) initially removed from home postdisclosure and (2) in

BACKGROUND: This article reports on the analysis of a Child Attachment Interview using the Dynamic Maturational Model (DMM) of attachment coding system developed by Crittenden for use with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). The aim of the study was to see if the two coders could classify the child interviews using the DMM-AAI approach and produce the range of DMM attachment strategies to be expected from previous research and the literature.
METHODS: Two coders independently classified interviews with 41 children aged between 6 and 13 years with an average age of 9.8 years. In total, 24 of

We determined the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in a foster care population and evaluated the performance of the FAS Facial Photographic Screening Tool. All children enrolled in a Washington State Foster Care Passport Program were screened for three conditions: (1) the FAS facial phenotype from a photograph, (2) evidence of brain damage with prenatal alcohol exposure from their Health and Education passport, and/or (3) other syndromes identifiable from a facial photograph. Screen-positives received diagnostic evaluations at a FAS Diagnostic and Prevention Network clinic. The preva

Correlates of three coping outcomes among individuals providing family care homes for mentally retarded residents were investigated. A sample of 104 home providers completed a set of questionnaires providing information on demographic characteristics, client characteristics, clarity of role expectations, neighbor attitudes, training, and social support. These factors were used to predict stress, perceptions of competence, and depression. Social support was the most powerful predictor of stress and perceptions of competence. Negative neighbor attitudes were associated with both stress and lower

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

PURPOSE: No research has examined childbirth from a national perspective among females emancipating from foster care. The present study fills this gap by: (1) documenting the rates of initial and repeat births among females ages 17 and 19 in a national prospective study and (2) identifying risk and protective factors at age 17 that predict childbirth between ages 17 and 19.
METHODS: This study used data from the National Youth in Transition Database and Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System to identify risk and protective factors associated with childbirth in a national sampl

Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO) is an alternative to congregate care, for youth involved in the juvenile justice and/or child welfare systems. Though demonstrated as clinically-and cost-effective across multiple rigorous trials, the long-term cost benefit of TFCO has not been considered. This study follows n = 166 females from adolescence to young adulthood, who were involved in both systems and referred for out-of-home-care. Records of arrest, court, incarceration (juvenile, jail, and prison), monitoring (parole and probation) and child-welfare services were included in a long-term cost-b

We employ a social stress framework, which examines the influence of multiple stressors (e.g., physical abuse, foster care placement) on an individual's ability to function (e.g., mental well-being), to longitudinally examine the effects of stressful life events on mental health and the role of the social environment in this process among 150 homeless youth. Results revealed that numerous stressors, such as physical abuse and running away from home more frequently, were associated with greater depressive symptoms and elevated anxiety. Having mentors and family and friends from home that youth

Care-experienced children are known to have histories of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Exposure to adversity is a well known risk factor for negative outcomes across the lifespan. However, very little is known about the adversity histories of young children in care, and how this may affect their emotional, behavioural, and attachment disorder outcomes over time. Data from 378 young children in foster care, aged 0-5 years old, as part of the Best Services Trial (BeST?) were used. Adversity experiences were identified and coded by reviewers from social care records. Age at entry to care

BACKGROUND: Reliable tools to discriminate between primary and specialist home palliative care are scarce, and no questionnaire has yet been validated in domiciliary oncology practice. The aim of the study was to validate the 17-item CP.BA.SPE 2025 questionnaire for identifying advanced cancer patients who need specialist home palliative care. METHODS: Cross-sectional multicentre study (pilot+multicentre validation) conducted in eight Home Palliative Care Units (HPCU) across Emilia-Romagna, Italy (March 2022-June 2024). The CP.BA.SPE 2025 was completed together with the HPCU’s independent judg

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between initiation of outpatient mental health service use and level of child welfare involvement.
METHODS: Three levels of child welfare involvement were examined: in-home care and no child welfare services beyond an initial investigation, in-home care and additional child welfare services, and placement in out-of-home care (foster care). Longitudinal data were collected for a subsample of children (N=3,592) aged two through 14 years who were enrolled in the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being, a nationally representative sample

This study investigates patients' goal-oriented experiences in the context of home dialysis for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim is to understand how the home care context can be designed to support chronic patients in achieving their goals. Drawing on goal-oriented experience theory, we explore how patients' motivations, desired outcomes, and lived experiences shape their perceptions of home health care. To do so, we employed a co-design-based qualitative methodology, including postal kits, photo diaries, ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews, and participatory workshops with 22

The Family Unification Program-a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development initiative to facilitate interagency collaboration between the child welfare and public housing service systems-aims to stabilize families at risk for parent-child separation by addressing housing needs. Findings from a randomized controlled trial suggest that families referred to the program experienced lower risk for homelessness and out-of-home placement compared with child welfare services as usual. The findings suggest that housing services offer an effective alternative to foster care.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare services that traditionally have been provided in long-term care institutions in Norway are increasingly being delivered at home to a growing population of older people with chronic conditions and functional limitations. Fostering reablement among older people is therefore important if they are to live safety at home for as long as possible. This study examines how healthcare professionals and managers (staff) in Norwegian municipalities promote reablement among community-dwelling older people.
METHODS: Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews lasting between 21 and 89

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spirituality and resilience among Native American emerging adults who were adopted or fostered as children-an understudied population at heightened risk for adverse outcomes due to the intersection of poverty, intergenerational trauma, cultural assimilation, and out-of-home care experiences. Utilizing a retrospective survey, data were collected from 405 Native American emerging adults ages 18 to 30 who were either adopted or fostered as children at any point from birth to age 17. Regression analysis revealed a small but statisti

BACKGROUND: Variation across local administrative units (municipalities) is critical in child welfare, as inconsistencies in out-of-home placement decisions can create inequalities in children's access to support. Given the impact of placement decisions on a child's well-being, and long-term outcomes, ensuring fairness and consistency is essential in promoting equal opportunities for all children.
OBJECTIVE AND SETTING: This study explores municipal variation in out-of-home placement decisions following referrals in Danish child and family welfare using 52.649 out-of-sample predicted risk sco

IMPORTANCE: The burden of the US opioid crisis has fallen heavily on children, a vulnerable population increasingly exposed to parental opioid use disorder (POUD) in utero or during childhood. A paucity of studies have investigated foster care involvement among those experiencing parental opioid use during childhood and the associated health and health care outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the health and health care outcomes of children experiencing POUD with and without foster care involvement.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used nationwide Medicaid cla
