BACKGROUND/AIM: Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic are inherently uncertain, dynamic and generate broader consequences on organisations, challenging traditional crisis management approaches. Conventional approaches often neglect the mechanisms and processes frontline practitioners enact in their local practices to adapt effectively. This study explores how healthcare professionals (HPs) at a university hospital centre developed and mobilised local knowledge to rapidly respond to the evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We conducted an interpretive single case study at a desig

We aimed to identify circumstances associated with feelings of pride in healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. A prospective cohort of Canadian HCWs reported pride-reinforcing events in April 2020 (Phase 1). In spring/summer 2022 (Phase 4), they completed a self-reported retrospective comparison rating of whether they 'now feel more [professional] pride than before the pandemic'. Among 4964 HCWs, 4360 (88%) described pride-reinforcing events in Phase 1; 3926 (79%) rated feeling more professional pride than before the pandemic in Phase 4. Teamwork (34%) and public appreciation

BACKGROUND: Although motorcycle-based food delivery workers face a significant risk of accidents, previous research has primarily focused on traffic accidents, neglecting the multidimensional nature of safety, which includes perceived accident risk, near-miss experiences, and accident-related anxiety.
OBJECTIVE: This study addresses this gap by investigating how occupational fatigue and health behaviors are associated with the Traffic Accident Risk Index (TARI) and its subdomains (near-miss experiences, self-rated accident anxiety, and other-rated accident anxiety).
METHODS: A cross-sectiona

Research on sexual and reproductive health including contraception use has predominantly focussed on women's behaviour. Much less is known about men's behaviour. We investigated the links between marriage practices and decision-making about contraception use among young married men in rural Odisha. This cross-sectional study used a mixed methods design. Data were collected through household surveys and in-depth interviews. Study findings revealed that over half of men were ill prepared for marriage and lacked understanding about what it would entail. Familiarity and communication between spous

Work with clients who have trauma-related problems is reported to lead to a constellation of reactions including vicarious traumatization, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Traumatic experiences are ubiquitous in the lives of homeless people, stemming from multiple life events prior to, and as a result of, experiencing homelessness. While most studies examine either burnout and vicarious traumatization or potential PTSD in people who work with those who are traumatized, they generally do not look at the possible co-existence of all three factors. They also do not explore if these factors indica

BACKGROUND: Sickness absence (SA) is a key indicator of health and job performance. The COVID-19 pandemic increased workload and stress, potentially affecting healthcare workers' (HCWs) health and retention. This study aimed at identifying vulnerable HCW groups by analysing SA trajectories before and after the pandemic.
METHODS: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted using administrative data from HCWs at Hospital del Mar, Barcelona, Spain, 2018-2023. SA was measured as cumulative days per semester. Latent Class Growth Analysis with zero-inflated Poisson models identified SA traject

BACKGROUND: Stress among health care workers (HCWs) contributes to burnout, workforce attrition, and adverse patient outcomes. Although virtual reality (VR), psychoeducation, ecological momentary assessments (EMAs), and wearables have independently shown promise in stress research, no integrated digital suite has combined controlled stress induction, intervention delivery, and longitudinal real-world monitoring in HCWs.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, engagement, and preliminary effectiveness of a multimodal Digital Health Monitoring and Intervention suite for Stress

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have been psychologically impacted by SARS-CoV-2. The pandemic presented substantial challenges to healthcare systems globally. Given the limited data available from EMRO countries, our systematic review aimed to specifically examine risk factors correlated with mental health symptoms among HCWs within this region. METHODS: We investigated PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases from January 2020 to August 2024. Relevant research articles that examined risk factors correlated with mental health symptoms among HCWs during

BACKGROUND: Lay health workers (LHWs) can support the HIV response by bridging gaps in human resources for health. Innovative strategies are needed to expand LHW programs in many low- and middle-income countries. Youth Health Africa (YHA) is a novel LHW approach implemented in South Africa that places young adults needing work experience in one-year non-clinical internships at health facilities to support HIV programs (e.g., as HIV testers, data clerks). While research suggests YHA can increase HIV service delivery, we need to understand healthcare worker perceptions to know if this is an acce
