OBJECTIVES: Pregnant/lactating women in some sub-Saharan Africa settings are at substantial risk of HIV acquisition and could benefit from preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), but safety data in pregnancy/lactation are limited.
DESIGN: Systematic data review through August 2016.
METHODS: We reviewed research reports/conference abstracts with maternal/child adverse outcome data in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected pregnant/lactating women receiving TDF alone or in combination with other drugs compared with non-TDF regimens.

CLINICAL CASE: A 55-year-old woman started therapy with dimethyl-fumarate on June 2014; it was well-tolerated aside from moderate flushing. Starting September 2014 she noticed a progressive hair loss, that neither the dermatological examination nor clinical and medical history nor blood investigations could explain. We report on two cases of adverse reactions to topical treatment with monoethyl fumarate. One patient suffering from atopic dermatitis reacted with contact dermatitis; the other, suffering from psoriasis, developed a generalized, partly pustulous exanthema as well as signs of systemic involvement, such as tachycardia and dyspnea. As the causative mechanism we suggest non-immunological contact urticaria syndrome.

Fumarate hydratase-deficient uterine leiomyoma is a rare, unique subtype of uterine leiomyoma. It may occur sporadically or in the context of the hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma syndrome.
