Dental abnormalities associated with failure of tooth eruption in src knockout and op/op mice.

c-src knockout and op/op mice develop osteopetrosis as a result of defective osteoclast function and osteoclast formation, respectively. The mutant mice can be distinguished readily from their wild-type littermates around 10-12 days after birth because their incisors do not erupt, but the morphology of their teeth and surrounding bone has not been reported previously in detail. Histologic examination of jaws of src-mutant mice reveals unerupted, abnormal incisors within their bony crypts. The tooth roots are distorted by foci of haphazard proliferation of odontogenic epithelium associated with

Intentional replantation of periodontally compromised teeth with concentrated growth factors.

BACKGROUND: Intentional replantation (IR) has been described as a potential treatment modality for periodontally compromised anterior teeth deemed hopeless, particularly when combined with regenerative biomaterials such as concentrated growth factor (CGF). However, high-level evidence documenting cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based outcomes in such cases remains limited. This paper evaluates the clinical and radiographic outcomes of IR using CGF in anterior teeth with advanced periodontal bone loss over a 1-year follow-up period. METHODS: Ten patients with single-rooted anterior teeth

Cementoblastoma and osteoblastoma: a comparison of histologic features.

Three cases of cementoblastoma (CB) and three cases of osteoblastoma (OB) were histologically compared. The aim of the study was to investigate whether CB and OB are different in other aspects than being connected with a tooth. CB cases were the following: maxillary lesions in a 23-year-old woman and a 22-yr-old man and a mandibular lesion in a 28-yr-old man. In one case the tumor was fused to the roots of two teeth. Of the OB cases, one occurred in the mandible of a 27-yr-old man, one in the ankle of a 19-yr-old male and one in the thoracic vertebrae of a 27-yr-old man. Histologically, CB and

New species of Ontocetus (Pinnipedia: Odobenidae) from the Lower Pleistocene of the North Atlantic shows similar feeding adaptation independent to the extant walrus (Odobenus rosmarus).

Ontocetus is one of the most notable extinct odobenines owing to its global distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. Originating in the Late Miocene of the western North Pacific, this lineage quickly spread to the Atlantic Ocean during the Pliocene, with notable occurrences in England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Morocco and the eastern seaboard of the United States. Reassessment of a pair of mandibles from the Lower Pleistocene of Norwich (United Kingdom) and a mandible from the Upper Pliocene of Antwerp (Belgium) that were referred to as Ontocetus emmonsi reveals existences of features of both

The role of saliva in dental erosion and a prosthetic approach to treatment: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe the relationship of some salivary parameters to dental erosion resulting from excessive citric acid consumption and present a description of a prosthetic approach used to restore the damaged dentition of a patient with severe erosion. BACKGROUND: The high consumption of dietary sources of acids can lead to erosion or the excessive wear of dental hard tissues. Erosion may be modified by salivary parameters such as flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations and composite resin veneers can be used successfully to

Endodontic management of mandibular second molar fused to odontome with 12-month follow-up using cone beam computed tomography: A case report.

Fusion is a developmental anomaly characterised by the union of two adjacent teeth or tooth-like substance. Odontomes are malformation of the dental tissue which arise during normal tooth development. They are usually asymptomatic but often associated with tooth eruption disturbance. In this paper, we report a rare case of fusion involving permanent mandibular second molar with an odontome, which led to a partial eruption of the molar as well as its devitalisation. Successful endodontic management was carried out in this case with a supplementary disinfection procedure using XP Endo finisher (

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Two case reports with 20-year follow-up.

These two case reports highlight the enormous clinical difficulties faced by dentists in providing satisfactory long-term dental care to patients who suffer from Epidermolysis bullosa. Problems of bullae formation in oral soft tissues and subsequent scarring are outlined in relation to the difficulty of maintaining satisfactory oral hygiene and a diet leading to minimal dental caries experience. The behavioural problems of maintaining patient compliance for preventive and restorative dentistry in this painful and debilitating disease are illustrated in these case reports. Difficulties in provi

Treatment of a horizontal open bite with an invisible multiloop appliance in a girl with tooth trauma.

This case report presents the treatment of a girl with a Class II horizontal open bite and severe crowding with an invisible appliance. She had been in a severe traffic accident at 5 years 10 months of age. Her teeth, especially the mandibular right lateral incisor, canine, and first premolar had ankylosed, and their roots were severely resorbed and fused to the alveolar bone. Orthodontic treatment started at the age of 12 years. The mandibular left first premolar and both maxillary first premolars were extracted to reduce overjet and crowding. The left first premolar was extracted and transpl

The convergent evolution of the pelvic suction cup: A unique key innovation in spiny-finned fishes.

Key innovations open ecological opportunities and can redirect evolutionary trajectories. In spiny-finned fishes, the pelvic suction cup-a fused adhesive structure formed from the pelvic fins and supported by a modified girdle-appears to be one such trait. Using a novel 960-species phylogeny spanning 940 exons and 67 newly sequenced snailfish genomes, we show that the suction cup evolved independently three times across lineages separated by over 100 million years. By enabling adhesion in high-energy habitats such as tide pools and waterfalls, the suction cup set the stage for body depression

Refinement of facial reconstructive surgery by stereo-model planning.

The development of rapid prototyping has evolved from crude milled models to laser polymerized stereolithographic models of excellent accuracy. The technology was advanced further with the recent introduction of fused deposition modelling and a three-dimensional ink-jet printing technique in stereo-model fabrication. The concept of using a three-dimensional model in planning the operation has amazed maxillofacial surgeons since its first application in grafting a skull defect in 1995. It was followed by many bright ideas for applications in the field of facial reconstructive surgery. Stereo-mo

Local RANKL gene transfer to the periodontal tissue accelerates orthodontic tooth movement.

It has been reported that not only selective alveolar-bone resorption, but also receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) expression is induced on the compressed side of an orthodontically moving tooth. Numerous reports have described the pharmacological acceleration of tooth movement (TM) through the activation of osteoclasts. However, because of rapid flush out by blood circulation, daily systemic administration or daily local injection is needed. Previously, we discovered that every-3-days OPG gene transfer to the periodontal-tissue inhibited RANKL-mediated osteoclastogene

Moving an ankylosed central incisor using orthodontics, surgery and distraction osteogenesis.

When a dentist replants an avulsed tooth, the repair process sometimes results in the cementum of the root and the alveolar bone fusing together, with the replanted tooth becoming ankylosed. When this occurs, the usual process of tooth movement with bone deposition and bone resorption at the periodontium cannot function. If dental ankylosis occurs in the maxillary incisor of a growing child, the ankylosed tooth also cannot move vertically with the subsequent vertical growth of the alveolar process. This results in the ankylosed tooth leaving the plane of occlusion and often becoming esthetical

Automatic Dental Plaque Segmentation Based on Local-to-Global Features Fused Self-Attention Network.

The accurate detection of dental plaque at an early stage will definitely prevent periodontal diseases and dental caries. However, it remains difficult for the current dental examination to accurately recognize dental plaque without using medical dyeing reagent due to the low contrast between dental plaque and healthy teeth. To combat this problem, this paper proposes a novel network enhanced by a self-attention module for intelligent dental plaque segmentation. The key motivation is to directly utilize oral endoscope images (bypassing the need for dyeing reagent) and get accurate pixel-level
