Roles of gender, age, race/ethnicity, and residential socioeconomics in obstructive sleep apnea syndromes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Review recent research on the roles of gender, race/ethnicity, residential socioeconomics and age in obstructive sleep apnea syndromes (OSA) and their treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Men have a higher prevalence of OSA than women and require higher continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) pressures for treatment, given similar severity of OSA. When comparing age, women have less severe apnea at all ages. Menopause, pregnancy and polycystic ovarian syndrome increase the risk for OSA in women. Neck fat and BMI influence apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) severity in women; abdominal fa

Exploring the role of gender and risk perceptions in people's decisions to register as a bone marrow donor.

Increasing the number of bone marrow (BM) donors is important to ensure sufficient diversity on BM registries to meet the needs of patients. This study used an experimental approach to test the hypothesis that providing information about the risks of BM donation to allay unsubstantiated fears would reduce male and female participants' perceptions of risk for donation and joining the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR). Males' and females' intentions to register on the ABMDR and their attitudes, norms and perceived behavioural control (efficacy) in relation to registering were also ex

Hostile intent attributions and relational aggression: the moderating roles of emotional sensitivity, gender, and victimization.

The current study adopts a relational vulnerability model to examine the association between hostile attribution bias and relational aggression. Specifically, the relational vulnerability model implicates the interactive effects of a number of relational risk factors in the development of relational aggression. A sample of 635 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students (50.2% females) completed a self-report measure assessing hostile attribution bias and emotional distress for relational provocations. Peer nominations and teacher reports of relational aggression and relational victimization were also co

Gender differences in the ST segment: effect of androgen-deprivation therapy and possible role of testosterone.

BACKGROUND: ST-segment elevation in a structurally normal heart is observed in Brugada- and early repolarization syndrome. The incidence of both syndromes is much higher in males than females. Clinical and basic studies suggest that testosterone plays an important role in ventricular repolarization. METHODS AND RESULTS: Standard surface 12-lead electrocardiograms recorded in 640 healthy subjects were studied (310 males, 330 females ranging in age from 5 to 89 years) (Study 1). The 3 ST levels (ST-J, -M, and -E) were measured in leads V(2) and V(5), which are representative of the right and le

Racial and gender disparities in hereditary colorectal cancer risk assessment: the role of family history.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to examine racial/ethnic and gender differences in self-reported family cancer history knowledge in patients at high risk for hereditary colon cancer syndromes. METHODS: We performed retrospective analysis of all referrals to the University of Chicago High Risk Colon Cancer Clinic between 1995 and 2003. RESULTS: We found hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer and familial adenomatous polyposis in 17% and 9% of Whites, respectively, and 6% and 0% of Blacks, respectively. Unknown paternal history was found in 6.5% of Whites and 18.9% of Blacks (23% men, 1

Bone mass in prepubertal children: gender differences and the role of physical activity and sunlight exposure.

Retrospective studies have suggested that the prepubertal years may be an important window of opportunity to increase bone mass, but there have been few direct studies and little exploration of gender differences in this age group. In this study, we report the associations among physical activity measures, sunlight exposure, body composition, and bone mass in 8-yr-old children. We studied 330 children in 1996 (115 girls and 215 boys; response rate, 60%) who had previously taken part in a cohort study of cot death in 1988. They had measurement of anthropometrics (height, weight, and body compos

The role of individual differences in lipoprotein, artery wall, gender, and behavioral responses in the development of atherosclerosis.

Striking individual differences exist in the response of animals to atherogenic diets. In this communication, we have summarized the accumulated data that relate to a better understanding of this individuality in susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Described herein, are the accumulated data concerning individual differences in the ways in which animals respond to dietary cholesterol. Also contained in this review, are beginning efforts to understand individual differences in susceptibility to coronary artery atherosclerosis at the level of the artery wall ("mesenchymal susceptibility"). Child Sexual Abuse, Self-esteem, and Delinquent Behaviors During Adolescence: The Moderating Role of Gender.

To reflect the complex phenomena of child sexual abuse (CSA), studies should examine possible gender specificities and explore potentially explanatory mechanisms. The current study aimed to test the moderating effect of gender in the mediated relationship between CSA, self-esteem, and delinquency during adolescence. A moderated mediation model was tested among a representative sample of 8,194 high school students (57.8% girls and 42.2% boys) age 14 to 18 in the province of Quebec in Canada. Results showed that self-esteem has an indirect effect on the relationship between CSA and delinquency.

Effects of recalled childhood gender nonconformity on adult genitoerotic role and AIDS exposure. HNRC Group.

The connections between childhood gender nonconformity (assessed by the Freund Feminine Gender Identity Scale, or FGI) and adult genitoerotic role (assessed by a sex history) were examined. The core sample was a group of 106 men who had sex with other men before 1980 and who are currently enrolled in two longitudinal studies of AIDS. Although other workers have cautioned against assuming a priori that childhood gender role is inherently related to adult preferences for particular sexual acts, our data suggest that there is at least a statistical association between these two concepts. In parti

Adaptive Functioning, Sensory Processing, and Behavioral Problems in Autistic Children: The Moderating Role of Gender.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently experience elevated emotional and behavioral difficulties, yet factors associated with variability remain incompletely understood. Adaptive functioning and sensory processing differences have been linked to behavioral problems, but little is known about whether associations differ between boys and girls. This study examined relationships between adaptive functioning, sensory processing, and behavioral problems in children with ASD, focusing on gender as a moderator. The purposive sampling included 110 autistic children (M age = 85.61 mont

Wanting, Yet Doubting: Moderating Role of Gender on the Relationship Between Ambivalence and Childbearing Desires.

Childbearing ambivalence-the coexistence of positive and negative evaluations regarding having children-has become an important focus in fertility research. Prior studies have primarily examined its role in contraceptive use and parenthood postponement, yet little is known about how ambivalence relates to the desire for children, particularly in the early, motivational stages of reproductive decision-making. This study investigates the association between subjective ambivalence towards childbearing and individuals' childbearing desires, with particular attention to gender differences. The anal

[Mental health in the workplace - What role do socioeconomic-, gender-, and migration-related inequalities play?].

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for mental health can be found in socio-economic-, gender- and migration-specific inequalities. These factors and the extent of depression, anxiety, and somatization among employees were examined in the present study. METHODS: As part of the Early Intervention in the Workplace Study (friaa), mentally burdened employees at five locations in Germany were surveyed on socio-demographic-, work-, migration-, and health-related content. Regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between these factors and depression (Patient-Health-Questionnaire-9, PHQ-9), anxi

The role of normal nasal morphological variations from race and gender differences on respiratory physiology.

This study identifies anatomical and airflow-induced relationships based on nasal morphological variations due to inter- and intra-racial differences and gender. Subject-specific nasal airway reconstruction was created from computed tomography images in 16 subjects: 4 subjects from each ethnic group (Black, East Asian, Caucasian, and Latino) comprising of 2 males and 2 females. Volume, surface area and nasal index were calculated, as well as airflow rate and nasal resistance after computational fluid dynamics simulations in the nasal airway. Results showed that nasal airspace surface area (p =

Prognostic role of patient gender in limited-disease small-cell lung cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that female gender could be a prognostic factor in limited-disease (LD) small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), but the correlation between patient gender and survival parameters remains unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 179 LD SCLC patients treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) were reviewed. Influence of patient gender on time to progression (TTP), local control (LC), brain metastasis-free (BMFS), distant metastasis-free (DMFS) and overall survival (OS) was analysed. RESULTS: Definitive CRT was completed by 179 (110 men/69 women) patie

Adult Binge Drinking: Childhood Sexual Abuse, Gender and the Role of Adolescent Alcohol-Related Experiences.

AIMS: This study examines gender differences in the pathway from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to adult binge drinking. METHODS: Using longitudinal data on 313 males and females (31-41 years old, mean = 36.21) in the Lehigh Longitudinal Study, we test for gender differences in the pathway from CSA to adolescent drinking, norms and pro-alcohol peers, to adult binge drinking. RESULTS: Controlling for family history of alcohol problems, socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnicity, we found that for females there was a significant direct effect of CSA on adult binge drinking. For males there was no

Gender differences in self-rated health and mortality association: role of pain-inducing musculoskeletal disorders.

AIMS: We aimed to examine whether pain-inducing musculoskeletal disorders might explain the gender difference in the strength of the self-rated health (SRH)-mortality association. METHODS: We pooled data from two National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (conducted in 1998 and 2001), which were linked to national mortality data of Korea using 13-digit unique personal identification numbers. There were 9,912 study participants, and 456 deaths were recorded (average length of follow-up = 5.7 years). Using a checklist of chronic conditions, the prevalences of major pain-causing musculosk

Protracted cannabinoid administration elicits antidepressant behavioral responses in rats: role of gender and noradrenergic transmission.

Research has shown that enhancement of cannabinoid CB(1) receptor activity elicits an antidepressant-like response in the forced swim test (FST); however, the effects of chronic administration of cannabinoid agents in the FST are not well characterized. In Experiment 1, the CB(1) receptor agonist HU-210 (0.1 mg/kg) was administered for 10 days to male rats, following which animals were exposed to the FST. In Experiment 2, the same protocol was utilized; however, prior to the FST animals were co-treated with either prazosin (1 mg/kg; an alpha(1)-adrenoreceptor antagonist) or propranolol (2.5 mg
