Prevalence of domestic violence and its related factors among pregnant women: Systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Domestic violence (DV) and gender-based violence (GBV) significantly impact women globally, with severe consequences for maternal and fetal health, especially during pregnancy. Prevalence rates of partner abuse during pregnancy vary widely, ranging from 2 percent to 57 percent. This study aims to assess the overall prevalence and types of DV among pregnant women through a systematic review and meta-analysis.The present study was conducted using a systematic review approach based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive searc

Gender sensitive approach in response to climate change: Why and how?

Global gender inequalities are intensifying, driven by intersecting social, political, and environmental pressures. Recent evidence shows that women bear a disproportionate burden of poverty, food insecurity, poor health, and gender-based violence. Climate change further compounds these vulnerabilities, threatening to reverse hard-won gains in gender equality, particularly in fragile and low-resource settings. Without urgent, gender-responsive and climate-informed action, millions more women and girls risk being pushed into extreme poverty in the coming decades.

Female violence against men.

The phenomenon of violence against men is a significantly less researched topic compared to violence against women. The issue of female violence against men is often overlooked, marginalized, and sometimes even considered less harmful or important. Established social patterns frequently depict women as weaker and defenseless individuals, and men as attackers and aggressors. In reality, there are situations where women become the initiators and perpetrators of acts of violence, and their victims are men. The phenomenon of violence against men is also a shameful topic, which results in a strong

Is violence against men a problem in Sri Lanka?

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) among men is a universally present phenomenon that is mostly unacknowledged. The relative lack of research in this area leads to a deficiency of evidence ascribing due recognition to GBV among men. This, in turn, leads to not identifying it as a social problem, hence, poor development of resources for victims as well as poor help-seeking behaviour patterns are prevalent, especially in Southeast Asia. AIMS: We aimed to determine the prevalence of GBV among men in Colombo, Sri Lanka. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional analytical community survey was c

Intersectional violence and the health of migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian emigrant women abroad: a scoping review.

Migratory flows have expanded with the increased movement of women from Latin America and other continents to Brazil, in addition to the emigration of Brazilian women to the Global North. Considering the context of the feminization of migration and the importance of understanding women's oppression in the face of displacement, this scoping review analyzes, from an intersectional perspective, scientific evidence on health and expressions of violence against migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian women abroad. The adopted databases are VHL, Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Sci

Digital gender violence and family honor coercion: cyberbullying and digital blackmail among Palestinian women.

BACKGROUND: Cyberbullying and digital blackmail (ibtizaz) have emerged as serious threats to psychological well-being, especially for women in conservative and honor-based societies. In Palestine, these digital abuses intersect with patriarchal norms, cultural stigma, and the broader context of political occupation. While global research addresses cyberbullying's psychological impact, there remains limited empirical insight into how these phenomena manifest in occupied Palestinian territories and affect women subject to collective codes of honor, shame, and silence. AIMS: This study aims to f

AWhen screams go unheard: covert violence, women victims, and social denial.

BACKGROUND: Covert violence-defined as a pattern of subtle, intentionally hidden, and socially camouflaged abusive behaviors that systematically erode a victim's reality, autonomy, and self-worth-remains a critically understudied dimension of gender-based violence. Distinct from overt psychological aggression, covert violence operates through tactics such as gaslighting, micro-invalidations, coercive control, and economic manipulation, often evading detection while inflicting profound harm. This scoping review systematically maps the evidence on its manifestations, psychosocial impacts, and th

Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence and Abuse in Asian Societies: A Scoping Review.

Technology-facilitated sexual violence and abuse (TFSVA) has rapidly emerged as a pervasive form of gender-based violence in Asia, yet regionally grounded syntheses remain scarce. This scoping review systematically reviewed empirical studies on TFSVA in Asian societies, focusing on how cultural contexts and platform ecosystems shape victimization, coping, and governance. Using PRISMA-ScR-consistent procedures, 22 studies published between 2021 and 2025 were identified across databases and analyzed, with all included studies focusing on adult populations. Across studies, TFSVA appears as a cont

Participation, equality, and justice in Rwanda for people who experience communication disability: Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.

PURPOSE: The right to communicate, by any means, is key to participation in peaceful and just societies. Participation relies on societal equality which, in turn, depends upon consensus that everyone has the same rights, as well as responsibility to uphold the rights of all. People who experience communication disability are, however, often invisible, misunderstood, stigmatised, and under-enumerated, particularly in resource-limited settings, including humanitarian contexts. A lack of identification and understanding of needs exclude this group from equal societal participation and exposes the

Forced displacement and gendered violence in conflict zones in the southern Philippines: the experiences of internally displaced people from Zamboanga and Marawi.

Migration is not always by choice, but rather, influenced by circumstance. Displacement due to human-made disasters, such as armed conflict, constitutes forced migration, also known as involuntary migration. This paper examines the experience of forced displacement due to armed conflict and the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) in conflict zones in the southern Philippines, focusing on the survivors of the 2013 Zamboanga Siege and the 2017 Marawi Siege. The researcher examines the dynamics of violence during armed conflict from a gendered perspective and illuminates the extent to which gende

Reimagining VAWA: Why Criminalization Is a Failed Policy and What a Non-Carceral VAWA Could Look Like.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is the signature federal legislative accomplishment of the anti-violence movement and has ensured that criminalization is the primary response to intimate partner violence in the United States. But at the time of its passage, some anti-violence activists, particularly women of color, warned that criminalization would be problematic for a number of reasons, a caution that has borne fruit in the 25 years since VAWA's passage. This article critiques the effectiveness of criminalization as anti-domestic violence policy and imagines what a non-carceral VAWA cou

Violence Against Women: Representations, Interpretations, and Education.

Cultural representations of violence against women have been mystified, eroticized, and depicted as heroic, camouflaging, and trivializing acts of violence as a societal norm for thousands of years. This themed issue invites people to re/claim identities and power, and enter into a global cultural discourse connected with cross-disciplinary channels and creative work.

Mental Health in Women Victims of Gender Violence: Descriptive and Multivariate Analysis of Neuropsychological Functions and Depressive Symptomatology.

Female victims of abuse, as well as suffering from psychopathological disorders such as depression, can have neuropsychological sequelae affecting memory and attention, with serious consequences, both physical and psychological, in their daily lives. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyse these sequelae that affect attention and memory, as well as the possible association of these sequelae to depression. A total of 68 women, victims of gender-based violence, between the ages of 15 and 62 participated in this study. The Luria DNA Battery (Neuropsychological Diagnosis of Adults) by

X Views and Counting: Interest in Rape-Oriented Pornography as Gendered Microaggression.

Academics and activists called to attention decades prior the importance of identifying, analyzing, and tracking the transmission of attitudes, behaviors, and norms correlated with violence against women. A specific call to attention reflected the media as a mode of transmission. This research builds on prior studies of media, with an emphasis on Internet search queries. Using Google search data, for the period 2004 to 2012, this research provides regional analysis of associated interest in rape-oriented pornography and pornographic hubs. Results indicate minor regional variations in interest,

A comparison of two population-based household surveys in Uganda for assessment of violence against youth.

Violence is associated with health-risk behaviors, potentially contributing to gender-related HIV incidence disparities in sub-Saharan Africa. Previous research has demonstrated that violence, gender, and HIV are linked via complex mechanisms that may be direct, such as through forced sex, or indirect, such as an inability to negotiate safe sex. Accurately estimating violence prevalence and its association with HIV is critical in monitoring programmatic efforts to reduce both violence and HIV. We compared prevalence estimates of violence in youth aged 15-24 years from two Ugandan population-ba
