Dietary supplementation of weaned piglets with a yeast-derived mannan-rich fraction modulates cecal microbial profiles, jejunal morphology and gene expression.

The development of nutritional strategies to improve microbial homeostasis and gut health of piglets post-weaning is required to mitigate the high prevalence of post-weaning diarrhea and subsequent growth checks typically observed during the weaning transition. Therefore the objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplementing piglet creep and nursery feed with a yeast-derived mannan-rich fraction (MRF) on piglet growth performance, cecal microbial profiles, and jejunal morphology and gene expression. Ten litters of piglets (n=106) were selected on postnatal day (PND) 7 and ass

Integrative Analysis of Colonic Biopsies from Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients Identifies an Interaction Between Microbial Bile Acid-inducible Gene Abundance and Human Angiopoietin-like 4 Gene Expression.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Microbial-derived bile acids can modulate host gene expression, and their faecal abundance is decreased in active inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. We analysed the impact of endoscopic inflammation on microbial genes involved in bile acid biotransformation, and their interaction with host transcriptome in the intestinal mucosa of IBD patients. METHODS: Endoscopic mucosal biopsies were collected from non-inflamed and inflamed terminal ileum, ascending and sigmoid colon of IBD patients. Prediction of imputed metagenome functional content from 16S rRNA profile and real-time

Sub-lethal concentration of sulfamethoxazole affects the growth performance of milkfish (Chanos chanos), the microbial composition of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the prevalence of sulfonamide-resistance genes in mariculture.

To investigate the impacts of sub-lethal concentrations of antibiotic agents in mariculture, culturable approach and DNA based detection were employed to isolate and analyse resistant bacteria and resistant genes in this study. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), the target rearing animal was exposed to sulfamethoxazole (SMX; 2 mg/L) for 8 weeks and resulted in reduced survival rate and weight gain to 61.9 % and 28.4 %, respectively compared to control milkfish (p < 0.001). The composition of SMX-resistant bacteria isolated from the culture water and the gastrointestinal tracts of milkfish underwent cha

IPSE, a urogenital parasite-derived immunomodulatory molecule, suppresses bladder pathogenesis and anti-microbial peptide gene expression in bacterial urinary tract infection.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infections can increase susceptibility to bacterial co-infections. This may be true for urogenital schistosomiasis and bacterial urinary tract co-infections (UTI). We previously reported that this co-infection is facilitated by S. haematobium eggs triggering interleukin-4 (IL-4) production and sought to dissect the underlying mechanisms. The interleukin-4-inducing principle from Schistosoma mansoni eggs (IPSE) is one of the most abundant schistosome egg-secreted proteins and binds to IgE on the surface of basophils and mast cells to trigger IL-4 release. IPSE can also tra

The effect of vaginal microbial communities on colonization by Staphylococcus aureus with the gene for toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1): a case-control study.

Menstrual toxic shock syndrome is associated with vaginal colonization by Staphylococcus aureus strains that encode toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (tst+). Interestingly, a small proportion of women are colonized by S. aureus tst+ but do not have symptoms of toxic shock syndrome. Here we sought to determine if differences in the species composition of vaginal bacterial communities reflect a differential risk of colonization by S. aureus capable of producing toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1). The composition of vaginal communities of women that were or were not colonized with S. aureus tst+ we

Noma affected children from Niger have distinct oral microbial communities based on high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments.

We aim to understand the microbial ecology of noma (cancrum oris), a devastating ancient illness which causes severe facial disfigurement in>140,000 malnourished children every year. The cause of noma is still elusive. A chaotic mix of microbial infection, oral hygiene and weakened immune system likely contribute to the development of oral lesions. These lesions are a plausible entry point for unidentified microorganisms that trigger gangrenous facial infections. To catalog bacteria present in noma lesions and identify candidate noma-triggering organisms, we performed a cross-sectional sequenc

Biochar and drilosphere soil synergistically form a low-cadmium, high-nutrient remediation hotspot: Insights from microbial functional gene and enzymatic stoichiometry analyses.

The drilosphere is a biogeochemical hotspot, but its role in biochar-assisted remediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil remains unclear. Comparisons were made between fresh (RS) and aged rice straw (ARS) biochar treatments at different Cd contamination levels to assess their effects on the drilosphere microenvironment. The results showed that ARS biochar was more effective in forming a low‑Cd, high‑nutrient hotspot, reducing total Cd in burrow wall soil (BWS) by 13.42% and increased TOC, TN, and TP by 17.89%, 76.16%, and 132.36% (P < 0.05). Enzyme activity followed BWS > lightly disturbed

External resistance modulates anodic biofilm architecture, electrochemical performance, and EET-related gene expression in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 microbial fuel cells.

External resistance is a key operational variable in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), yet its mechanistic influence on pure-culture electrogenic biofilms remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated how fixed external resistances (10, 100, 500, and 1000 Ω) applied during start-up modulate electrochemical performance, architecture, membrane-integrity-associated viability, and extracellular electron transfer (EET)-related gene expression in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 anodic biofilms. Gene-centered metagenome analysis of Vulcano Island soil (Aeolian archipelago, Italy) reveals diverse microbial key players in methane, hydrogen and sulfur cycles.

The Aeolian archipelago is known worldwide for its volcanic activity and hydrothermal emissions, of mainly carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide are minor components of these emissions which together can feed large quantities of bacteria and archaea that do contribute to the removal of these notorious greenhouse gases. Here we analyzed the metagenome of samples taken from the Levante bay on Vulcano Island, Italy. Using a gene-centric approach, the hydrothermal vent community appeared to be dominated by Proteobacteria, and Sulfurimonas was the most abundant

Anaerobic bacteria Cetobacterium sp. nov C33 plays a crucial role in the intestinal microbial balance and regulation of gene expression to immune and metabolic responses in Nile tilapia.

Aquaculture ranks among the largest global food production industries, with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) being one of the most widely farmed species. However, increasing consumer demand and higher stocking densities place considerable stress on aquaculture systems, often leading to a rise in fish diseases. Probiotics have emerged as valuable tools in this sector, promoting fish health by modulating physiological functions such as metabolism, digestion, immune responses, stress tolerance, and disease resistance. Here, the probiotic potential of Cetobacterium sp. nov C33, an anaerobic ba

Effect of flumetsulam alone and coexistence with polyethylene microplastics on soil microbial carbon and nitrogen cycles: Elucidation of bacterial community structure, functional gene expression, and enzyme activity.

Flumetsulam (FLU) is a new class of broad-spectrum herbicides. With the widespread use of plastic products, polyethylene (PE) microplastics (MPs) may remain in the soil. It is possible for these two novel contaminants to co-exist in the soil environment. In the present study, we used brown soil as the test soil and determined the toxicity of FLU at 0.05, 0.5 and 2.5 mg kg-1 alone and in combination with PE MPs (1%) on soil microorganisms. The obtained results demonstrated that the exposure of FLU and FLU+MPs had an inhibitory effect on the numbers of bacteria and fungi. In addition, FLU and FL

Microbial metabolite deoxycholic acid inhibits noncancerous NCM460 human colon cell proliferation: an inverse correlation between Bmal1:Clock gene expression and cell apoptosis.

High fat diets increase colonic deoxycholic acid (DCA) concentrations, which induce apoptosis, and subsequently enrich a compensatory DCA-resistant mutant colon cell subpopulation. While circadian Bmal1 and Clock genes are key regulators for cell proliferation, little is known about the relationship between DCA-induced apoptosis and circadian gene regulation in normal colon cells. In this study, we employed a noncancerous NCM460 human colon cell model to simulate the effect of DCA on cell proliferation in the colon and hypothesized that DCA-induced apoptosis is regulated by the Bmal1Clock comp

Microbial gene expression during hibernation in arctic ground squirrels: greater differences across gut sections than in response to pre-hibernation dietary protein content.

Obligate seasonal hibernators fast for 5-9 months depending on species yet resist muscle atrophy and emerge with little lean mass loss. The role of the gut microbiome in host nitrogen metabolism during hibernation is therefore of considerable interest, and recent studies support a role for urea nitrogen salvage (UNS) in host-protein conservation. We were interested in the effect of pre-hibernation diet on UNS and the microbial provision of essential amino acids (EAAs) during hibernation; therefore, we conducted a study whereby we fed arctic ground squirrels (Urocitellus parryii) pre-hibernatio
