Synchronized breeding and reproductive resilience in dairy cattle: mitigating metritis, heat stress, and transgenerational fertility impairment.

Heat stress profoundly compromises reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle by disrupting follicular and oocyte development, altering steroid hormone profiles, impairing estrous expression and ovulation, reducing fertilization success, hindering embryonic development, and increasing early embryonic loss. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying these disruptions remain incompletely understood, significant advances in reproductive technologies have been developed to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress on reproductive performance. Estrous cycle synchronization programs, enabling timed

Extensive introgression at late stages of species formation: Insights from grasshopper hybrid zones.

The process of species formation is characterized by the accumulation of multiple reproductive barriers. The evolution of hybrid male sterility, or Haldane's rule, typically characterizes later stages of species formation, when reproductive isolation is strongest. Yet, understanding how quickly reproductive barriers evolve and their consequences for maintaining genetic boundaries between emerging species remains a challenging task because it requires studying taxa that hybridize in nature. Here, we address these questions using the meadow grasshopper Pseudochorthippus parallelus, where populat

The howler monkey genome provides new insights into the distinctive howling and folivorous adaptations of New World monkeys.

BACKGROUND: New World monkeys (Platyrrhini), a highly diverse primate lineage endemic to Mexico, Central and South America, include howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.), one of the most ecologically successful genera in the region. They have evolved key adaptations including a specialized folivorous diet and distinctive howling calls that carry over long distances in tropical rainforests, conferring critical survival advantages. However, the genetic underpinnings of these adaptations-specifically, the genes involved in fiber digestion, fermentation, and metabolic adaptation for folivory, and those r

Mus musculus populations in Western Australia lack VKORC1 mutations conferring resistance to first generation anticoagulant rodenticides: Implications for conservation and biosecurity.

BACKGROUND: Humans routinely attempt to manage pest rodent populations with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). We require information on resistance to ARs within rodent populations to have effective eradication programs that minimise exposure in non-target species. Mutations to the VKORC1 gene have been shown to confer resistance in rodents with high proportions of resistance in mice found in all European populations tested. We screened mutations in Mus musculus within Western Australia, by sampling populations from the capital city (Perth) and a remote island (Browse Island). These are the fir

Identity of Fasciola spp. in sheep in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: In Egypt, liver flukes, Fasciola spp. (Digenea: Fasciolidae), have a serious impact on the farming industry and public health. Both Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica are known to occur in cattle, providing the opportunity for genetic recombination. Little is known on the identity and genetic variability of Fasciola populations in sheep. METHODS: This study was performed to determine the prevalence of liver flukes in sheep in Menofia Province as a representative area of the delta region in Egypt, as measured by postmortem examination of slaughtered animals at three abattoirs

Speciation history and widespread introgression in the European short-call tree frogs (Hyla arborea sensu lato, H. intermedia and H. sarda).

European tree frogs (Hyla) characterized by short temporal parameters of the advertisement call form six genetically differentiated but morphologically cryptic taxa, H. arborea sensu stricto, H. orientalis and H. molleri from across Europe to western Asia (together referred to as H. arborea sensu lato), two putative taxa within H. intermedia (Northern and Southern) from the Italian Peninsula and Sicily, and H. sarda from Sardinia and Corsica. Here, we assess species limits and phylogenetic relationships within these 'short-call tree frogs' based on mitochondrial DNA and nuclear protein-coding

Comparative genomics provides insights into chromosomal evolution and immunological adaptation in horseshoe bats.

Horseshoe bats are natural hosts of zoonotic viruses, yet the genetic basis of their antiviral immunity is poorly understood. Here we generated two new chromosomal-level genome assemblies for horseshoe bat species (Rhinolophus) and three close relatives, and show that, during their diversification, horseshoe bats underwent extensive chromosomal rearrangements and gene expansions linked to segmental duplications. These expansions have generated new adaptive variations in type I interferons and the interferon-stimulated gene ANXA2R, which potentially enhance antiviral states, as suggested by our

Congenic strains for genetic analysis of virulence traits in Cryptococcus gattii.

Cryptococcus gattii is responsible for a large outbreak of potentially fatal disease that started in the late 1990s on Vancouver Island, Canada. How this fungus and the outbreak isolates in particular cause disease in immunocompetent people is unknown, with differing hypotheses. To explore genetic contributions, a pair of congenic a and α mating type strains was generated by a series of 11 backcrosses to introgress the MAT locus from a nonoutbreak strain into the background of strain R265, isolated from a Vancouver Island patient. The congenic pair was used to investigate three traits: mitocho

Analysis of the evolutionary forces shaping mitochondrial genomes of a Neotropical malaria vector complex.

Many vectors of human malaria belong to complexes of morphologically indistinguishable cryptic species. Here we report the analysis of the newly sequenced complete mitochondrial DNA molecules from six recognized or putative species of one such group, the Neotropical Anopheles albitarsis complex. The molecular evolution of these genomes had been driven by purifying selection, particularly strongly acting on the RNA genes. Directional mutation pressure associated with the strand-asynchronous asymmetric mtDNA replication mechanism may have shaped a pronounced DNA strand asymmetry in the nucleotid

The contemporary Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) gene pool includes ancestry from a potential ghost population: inferences from population genomics.

Local extirpations and extreme bottlenecks can deplete genetic variation and obscure population dynamics, especially in highly mobile species. The gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) undertakes some of the longest known migrations among mammals, and two stocks (eastern and western gray whales) were historically recognized in the Pacific. Commercial whaling depleted both stocks, and while the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) stock has rebounded, the western stock was feared extirpated. In the post-whaling era, the origin of a small summer aggregation near Sakhalin Island, Russia (which we refer to as

The Lbw2 locus promotes autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

The lupus-prone New Zealand Black (NZB) strain uniquely develops a genetically imposed severe spontaneous autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) that is very similar to the corresponding human disease. Previous studies have mapped anti-erythrocyte Ab (AEA)-promoting NZB loci to several chromosomal locations, including chromosome 4; however, none of these have been analyzed with interval congenics. In this study, we used NZB.NZW-Lbw2 congenic (designated Lbw2 congenic) mice containing an introgressed fragment of New Zealand White (NZW) on chromosome 4 encompassing Lbw2, a locus previously linked to

Sex Differences in the Cerebral Collateral Circulation.

Premenopausal women and intact female rodents sustain smaller cerebral infarctions than males. Several sex-dependent differences have been identified as potential contributors, but many questions remain unanswered. Mice exhibit wide variation in native collateral number and diameter (collateral extent) that is dependent on differences in genetic background, aging, and other comorbidities and that contributes to their also-wide differences in infarct volume. Likewise, variation in infarct volume correlates with differences in collateral-dependent blood flow in patients with acute ischemic strok

Evolutionary history of Cuban crocodiles Crocodylus rhombifer and Crocodylus acutus inferred from multilocus markers.

Among crocodilians, Crocodylus rhombifer is one of the world's most endangered species with the smallest natural distribution. In Cuba, this endemic species coexists with the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). Hybridization between these two species is well known in captivity and might occur in the wild, but has never been demonstrated genetically. Here, we combined molecular data with environmental, geographic, and fossil data to infer the evolutionary history of Crocodylus in the Cuban Archipelago, and to evaluate genealogical support for species boundaries. We analyzed seven microsatel

Mastomys natalensis (Smith, 1834) as a natural host for Schistosoma haematobium (Bilharz, 1852) Weinland, 1858 x Schistosoma bovis Sonsino, 1876 introgressive hybrids.

Cercarial emission of schistosomes is a determinant in the transmission to the definitive host and constitutes a good marker to identify which definitive host is responsible for transmission, mainly in introgressive hybridization situations. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that micro-mammals play a role in Schistosoma haematobium, S. bovis, and/or S. haematobium x S. bovis transmission. Small mammal sampling was conducted in seven semi-lacustrine villages of southern Benin. Among the 62 animals trapped, 50 individuals were investigated for Schistosoma adults and eggs: 37 Rattus rattus, 3 R

Maintenance of phenotypic divergence in two sympatric monkeyflowers with weak reproductive isolation.

Sympatric species often exhibit permeable reproductive barriers, yet many of them coexist as phenotypically distinct entities. One way to account for this apparent paradox is that selection on loci that underlie divergent traits render them less likely to cross species boundaries. Chromosomal rearrangements can further help counterbalance the homogenizing effects of hybridization if they capture sets of locally adaptive alleles, suppressing recombination among them. Here, we extensively sequenced two young, co-occurring monkeyflower species, Mimulus glaucescens and M. guttatus , that exhibit m

The evolutionary origin of the collective unconscious and the appeal of research on Neanderthals and other ancient humans.

Why does research on Neanderthals attract public attention far beyond its immediate scientific relevance? Such fascination may reflect more than intellectual curiosity; it may involve the activation of deep symbolic structures that Carl Jung termed the collective unconscious. Integrating evolutionary biology, genomics, paleoanthropology, and psychology, I address a question Jung did not explicitly pose: when, along the human evolution, did the collective unconscious originate? I argue that this structure emerged gradually rather than suddenly. Homo erectus established a cognitive floor charact

THE EFFECTS OF HOST-PLANT GENOTYPE, HYBRIDIZATION, AND ENVIRONMENT ON GALL-APHID ATTACK AND SURVIVAL IN COTTONWOOD: THE IMPORTANCE OF GENETIC STUDIES AND THE UTILITY OF RFLPS.

Using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) we show how host-plant genotype and hybridization in cotton wood, Populus sp., affects the attack and survival of the gall-forming aphid, Pemphigus betae. Fremont cottonwoods, hybrid ∗∗∗F1's and backcross ∗∗∗1's were found to be highly resistant, while backcross 2's, 3's, 4's and pure narrowleafs ranged from highly resistant to highly susceptible with only a few trees being highly resistant. Results from our genetic analysis also suggest that resistance is likely polygenic, not the result of single gene resistance. In addition, genetic an

Evidence for divergent patterns of local selection driving venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus).

Snake venoms represent an enriched system for investigating the evolutionary processes that lead to complex and dynamic trophic adaptations. It has long been hypothesized that natural selection may drive geographic variation in venom composition, yet previous studies have lacked the population genetic context to examine these patterns. We leverage range-wide sampling of Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus) and use a combination of venom, morphological, phylogenetic, population genetic, and environmental data to characterize the striking dichotomy of neurotoxic (Type A) and hemorrhagic (Ty

Marine invasions enter the genomic era: three lessons from the past, and the way forward.

The expanding scale and increasing rate of marine biological invasions have been documented since the early 20th century. Besides their global ecological and economic impacts, non-indigenous species (NIS) also have attracted much attention as opportunities to explore important eco-evolutionary processes such as rapid adaptation, long-distance dispersal and range expansion, and secondary contacts between divergent evolutionary lineages. In this context, genetic tools have been extensively used in the past 20 years. Three important issues appear to have emerged from such studies. First, the stud

The genetic architecture of temperature-induced partial fertility restoration in A1 cytoplasm in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench).

High-temperature-induced partial fertility in CMS sorghum is controlled by multiple genes that are distinct from genes involved in fertility restoration, contributing to reduced diversity in elite females. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is used for commercial production of hybrid seed in sorghum. CMS-based hybrid breeding systems require female parental lines (CMS lines) to remain male sterile to prevent self-pollination and enable cross-pollination to generate hybrid seed. However, genetic and environmental factors can lead to the loss of male sterility in the pollen-accepting female parent
