OBJECTIVES: Candida species are among the most important causes of hospital acquired blood borne infections, and with high rates of mortality and morbidity, these infections are still a major problem today. History of gastrointestinal surgery, administration of total parenteral nutrition and/or wide spectrum antibiotics and immune suppression following organ transplantations are considered serious risk factors for these infections. This study aimed to evaluate the patients from our general surgery department with diagnosed candidemia; by means of strain, treatment and prognosis.

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of nails caused by dermatophytes, yeasts or non-dermatophytes moulds. In this study, 500 patients suspected of having onychomycosis reffered from the out patient department (OPD), Dermatology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital Imphal Manipur during the period from January 2007 to December 2008 were processed in the Department of Microbiology RIMS. Blastoschizomyces capitatus is an emerging pathogenic fungus that can cause deep invasive diseases in neutropenic patients. We developed a model of disseminated blastoschizomycosis in immunosuppressed mice to evaluate the effectiveness of amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole and voriconazole. High-dose fluconazole was the most effective drug at prolonging the survival of mice and at reducing fungal burden in the kidneys, spleen and liver.

UNLABELLED: Fungemia is classically caused by a single species and the detection of more than one species in blood samples is uncommon.
