Linguoverted mandibular canine teeth (LMC) are a common cause of class 1 malocclusion, which may result in a traumatic occlusion. When deciduous LMC are diagnosed, extraction is commonly performed to alleviate traumatic occlusion. This retrospective study was designed to observe the outcome of the permanent dentition in dogs with a class 1 malocclusion receiving treatment for deciduous LMC. Medical records from a veterinary dental referral hospital were used to identify patients that underwent extraction of deciduous LMC's prior to the eruption of the permanent mandibular canine teeth. The per

Peri-implantitis surrounding oral implants is an inflammatory process affecting the soft and hard tissues resulting in rapid loss of supporting bone associated with bleeding and suppuration. The etiopathogenesis of early and late peri-implantitis is less well understood and seems to be related to the peri-implant environment and to the soft tissues/implant interface, to patient-related factors (smoke, systemic diseases, plaque control) and to host-parasite equilibrium. However, there is wide scientific evidence that demonstrates the direct correlation between oral microbiota and peri-implant m

Biopsy specimens were taken at gingivectomy from 18 adult patients undergoing treatment for chronic marginal periodontitis. They were embedded so that the cut surface of the gingiva was parallel to the top of the block to obtain a comprehensive view in a transversal plane of the inflammatory cell infiltrate near the bottom of the pocket. Sections were stained with HES or with toluidine blue for histological description, and acid alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) was used to differentially stain T lymphocytes, plasma cells and monocytes/macrophages. Sections stained with HES showed that th

Gingival fibromatosis with hypertrichosis syndrome is an extremely rare genetic condition characterized by profound overgrowth of hair and gums, as well as other variable features. Gingival fibromatosis is characterized by a large increase in the gingival dimension which extends above the dental crowns, covering them partially or completely. They were found to have a genetic origin, may also occur in isolation or be part of a syndrome, or acquired origin, due to specific drugs administered systemically. Congenital generalized hypertrichosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases with continuing

Plaque induced gingival enlargement is most commonly seen and when encountered simultaneously with erosive lichen planus poses a challenge to the treating dentist. Prognosis of one condition may influence the prognosis of another condition. The presented case highlights the significance of proper diagnosis and the management of simultaneously occurring gingival lesions. A 49-year-old hypertensive female presented with painful enlarged bleeding and suppurating gums with burning sensation on eating food along with long-term usage of antihypertensive drug amlodipine known for its gingival enlarge

INTRODUCTION: In the present study, we aimed to assess MMP-9 and type IV collagen in the gingival tissue in patients with gingival overgrowth (GO) after orthodontic treatment, with or without clinical signs of inflammation to appreciate the role of balance between those two markers in the onset of GO during tooth movement.
MATERIALS: Gingival tissue was harvested from 45 patients divided in three groups: 15 patients with orthodontic appliance that developed GO on at least two teeth; 15 patients with chronic gingivitis with GO; 15 patients (control group) with healthy periodontal tissues, with

The patient is suffering from Anderson-Fabry disease. This was documented by family history, clinical findings, histochemical and electronmicroscopic demonstration of ceramide in the blood vessels, and enzyme studies. The patient, at age 17, developed a unique gingival enlargement, gingivitis granulomatosa, a cobbled tongue, glossitis granulomatosa, and a lip enlargement, cheilitis granulomatosa. This was not found in other members of the family. The clinical, histological, and electronmicroscopic findings were analogous to Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome. The patient did not have sarcoidosis or

Gingival enlargement is common among patients and can be caused by a variety of etiological factors. The most common reason is poor oral hygiene and high bacterial load that leads to gingival inflammation and enlargement. Other implicated factors include systemic drugs, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) taken by epileptic patients, calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine (Procardia) and verapamil (Calan) for the treatment of hypertension, arrhythmia and angina. Another class of medication associated with gingival enlargement is immunosuppressive agents given to organ-transplant patients to prev

BACKGROUND: The host response to microbial challenge depends on the recruitment of homing leucocytes and may be related to the experience to infectious insults over years.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the soft tissue reactions to de novo plaque formation at sites treated with either open flap debridement or with the use of resective means during periodontal therapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients, who had been treated for periodontal disease (severe generalized chronic periodontitis), participated in the study. Surgical therapy was performed using either gingivec

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with facial pain, ipsilateral facial dystonia, and phantom supernumerary teeth, beginning after resection of hypertrophic gums. She had familial sensorineural deafness.
BACKGROUND: Atypical cranial dystonia subsequent to dental procedures is associated with facial pain, dysesthesias, or phantom phenomena, but not with phantom supernumerary teeth. Patients with migraine are susceptible to experience cephalic phantom phenomena after dental procedures. Wynne syndrome is a hereditary autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital sensorineural deafness an

BACKGROUND: Hyperplastic gingivitis and gingival hyperplasia accompanying gestation have been termed "pregnancy gingivitis" and "pregnancy tumor." The condition is benign but, rarely, is complicated by severe bleeding that is difficult to manage. A single case of a pregnancy tumor is reported.
CASE: A 28-year-old woman in the third trimester was evaluated for treatment of a pregnancy granuloma with recurrent episodes of severe bleeding for two weeks. Conservative management by firm pressure on gauze packs was applied to control the bleeding, but in vain. Induction of labor was conducted at 37

Zimmermann-Laband Syndrome (ZLS; MIM 135500) is a rare genetic disorder with the main clinical manifestations of gingival fibromatosis and finger/toe nail hypoplasia. KCNH1 (potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily H, member-1), KCNN3 (potassium channel, voltage-gated, subfamily H, member-3) and ATP6V1B2 (ATPase H+ transporting V1 subunit B2) genes are considered causative genes for ZLS. However, there are limited reports about the diverse clinical presentation and genetic heterogeneity. Reporting more information on phenotype-genotype correlation and the treatment of ZLS is necessary. This

A new technique of periodontal flap surgery was performed on 5 patients with severe periodontal recessions of the upper or lower anterior teeth. The procedure begins with a thorough root and soft tissue scaling. For the surgical approach the periosteum was incised and mobilized at the apical part of the mucoperiosteum flap; it will further be used to cover the defect. The mucoperiosteum flap is then readapted and sutured. Prior to surgery the following clinical parameters were registered: sulcus bleeding index, periodontal probing depths, attachment loss and the height of the attached gingiva.

Constant efforts are made to achieve simpler, faster, and less-invasive surgical approaches for harvesting autologous connective tissue grafts. While the palate is considered a gold-standard har-vesting site, its association with complications and patient discomfort have led clinicians to explore alternative sites, like the tuberosity. However, current tuberosity harvesting techniques face several limitations. Through a multiple-recessions clinical case intended as a proof of concept, this article describes a novel harvesting technique based on a gingivectomy that triggers the tuberosity tange

This study evaluated the success rate of orthodontic treatment of linguoverted mandibular canines in dogs using a directly applied inclined plane device. Medical records were retrospectively evaluated at 11 veterinary dental specialty hospitals from 1999 to 2021. Malocclusion classes included 41.7% in class 1, 47.2% in class 2, 6.9% in class 3, and 4.2% in class 4. The severity of linguoversion was mild in 7.6% of teeth, moderate in 33.9%, and severe in 58.5%. There was complete resolution of linguoversion in 71.2% of teeth, functional resolution in 25.4%, and failure in 3.4%. The median treat

Gingival fibromatosis is characterized by gingival tissue overgrowth of a firm and fibrotic nature. The growth is slow and progressive and is drug-induced, idiopathic, or hereditary in etiology. It occurs isolated or frequently as a component of various syndromes. Our patient presented with the complaint of gingival enlargement associated with progressive deafness, characteristic of Jones syndrome. This case report is important and unique since it is the first known one to have a Jones syndrome-like presentation without a family history. A male patient aged 14 years reported with the chief com

Gingival enlargement is a side effect of different drug classes, with calcium channel blockers being among the most often cited examples. Most often accompanied by a disruption in the oral biofilm, this form of gingival overgrowth, with histological signs of hyperplasia and hypertrophy, becomes a chronic inflammatory condition with the oral biofilm a primary cause. This periodontal disease is now classified as 'dental biofilm-induced gingivitis', and its preferred name is drug-influenced gingival expansion. The present study presented the case of a patient with gingival enlargement while being
