[CHANGES OF SALIVARY CORTISOL LEVELS IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC GINGIVITIS].

Periodontal diseases are widespread in children and adolescents. By the information of World Health Organization, 80% of children have different degrees of inflammatory periodontal diseases, that often develop from the ages of 10-11 years. Pathology of periodontal tissues is developed when there is a disproportional growth and development of tissue structure, as within the system, also in the systems and structures that provide entire organism, which itself supplements the development of periodontal diseases in juveniles. Harmonious development of children and adolescents is, on a certain leve

Distribution of dental plaque and gingivitis within the dental arches.

Objective The natural accumulation of supragingival plaque on surfaces of human teeth is associated with gingival inflammation and the initiation of common oral diseases. This study evaluated the distribution of dental plaque and gingivitis scores within the dental arches after prophylaxis. Methods Adult subjects from the Dharwad, India area representing the general population who provided written informed consent were scheduled for screening. Healthy subjects over the age of 18 years, not currently requiring any medical or dental care, and presenting with a complement of at least 20 natural t

Human Memory B Cells in Healthy Gingiva, Gingivitis, and Periodontitis.

The presence of inflammatory infiltrates with B cells, specifically plasma cells, is the hallmark of periodontitis lesions. The composition of these infiltrates in various stages of homeostasis and disease development is not well documented. Human tissue biopsies from sites with gingival health (n = 29), gingivitis (n = 8), and periodontitis (n = 21) as well as gingival tissue after treated periodontitis (n = 6) were obtained and analyzed for their composition of B cell subsets. Ag specificity, Ig secretion, and expression of receptor activator of NF-κB ligand and granzyme B were performed. Al

Ligneous gingivitis associated with plasminogen deficiency: a challenge in diagnosis.

A 66-year-old female presented with gum bleeding and soreness. Her medical history was significant for delayed wound healing, which appeared to cause blindness in her right eye. A gingival incisional biopsy revealed replacement of fibrous connective tissue by an amorphous and eosinophilic material. Direct immunofluorescent staining for antibodies was negative. After the differential diagnosis of ligneous gingivitis (LG) was rendered, the activity and antigenic level of plasminogen was tested and found to be significantly decreased. Partial improvement was observed within 1 year following a reg

Effect of desquamative gingivitis on periodontal status: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) represents the gingival manifestation associated with several mucocutaneous disorders and systemic conditions. Little is known of whether or not DG could influence the onset or progression of plaque-related periodontitis. In this study, the potential impact of DG on plaque-related attachment loss and pocket formation has been evaluated. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of 12 patients with DG [eight oral lichen planus (OLP), four mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP)], never treated for DG lesions or plaque-related periodontitis, was carried out. Probing

"Strawberry like" gingivitis being the first sign of Wegener's granulomatosis.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a rare granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis of small vessels, affecting vascular structures having predilection for upper airways. If untreated WG can be lethal. WG is also known to cause oral mucosal lesions. We report a case of WG that was first diagnosed on oral gingival mucosa. A 51-year old woman was referred to a specialized dentist because of consistent irritative buccal gingival hyperplasia that did not react to conservative and microbial treatment. The lesion was biopsied and the diagnosis was suggestive for WG. Patient was further referred to the Depa

Interstitial and Langerhans' dendritic cells in chronic periodontitis and gingivitis.

The aim of the present study was to compare quantitatively the distribution of dendritic cell subpopulations in chronic periodontitis and gingivitis. Fourteen biopsies from patients with chronic periodontitis and fifteen from patients with gingivitis were studied. An immunoperoxidase technique was used to quantify the number of Langerhans' cells (CD1a) and interstitial dendritic cells (factor XIIIa) in the oral and sulcular and junctional/pocket epithelia and in the lamina propria. A greater number of factor XIIIa+ dendritic cells in the lamina propria and CD1a+ dendritic cells in the oral epi

Treatment of plaque-induced gingivitis, chronic periodontitis, and clinical conditions.

The inflammatory components of plaque induced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis can be managed effectively for the majority of patients with a plaque control program and non-surgical and/or surgical root debridement coupled with continued periodontal maintenance procedures. Some patients may need additional therapeutic procedures. All of the therapeutic modalities reviewed in this position paper may be utilized by the clinician at various times over the long-term management of the patient's periodontal condition.

Risk indicators of gingivitis in 5-year-old Brazilian children.

PURPOSE: To identify the risk indicators of gingivitis among socioeconomic, clinical and gender variables in 5-year-old children attending preschools in Piracicaba, Brazil, in 2005. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 728 subjects attending 22 public (n = 428) and 18 private (n = 300) preschools. A previously calibrated examiner performed the clinical examination in an outdoor setting, under natural light, using a dental mirror, Community Periodontal Index probe and air-drying. Gingival status was measured using the gingival alteration index for 5-year-olds according to the nationa

Necrotizing gingivitis: a possible oral manifestation of ticlopidine-induced agranulocytosis.

Agranulocytosis is a rare complication of ticlopidine and can be life-threatening. We report a case of ticlopidine-induced agranulocytosis and neutropenia (neutrophil count of 0.1 x 10(9)/L) with necrotizing gingivitis in a 54-year-old Malaysian-Chinese female. She was started on ticlopidine 250 mg twice daily 3 weeks prior to this hospital admission. We started her on intravenous metronidazole and amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin) and concurrently stopped ticlopidine. A series of clinical and laboratory investigations were carried out and a final diagnosis of necrotizing gingivitis

Inhibition of experimental gingivitis in beagle dogs with topical mercaptoalkylguanidines.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide is a free radical produced in host tissues by constitutive and inducible forms of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase. Nitric oxide plays physiological roles, but it is also involved in the pathophysiology of several inflammatory conditions, including arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and circulatory shock. Local increases in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and reactive nitrogen products have also been demonstrated in humans and animals with periodontal disease. This masked, randomized, placebo-controlled preclinical investigation examined the effect of two mercaptoal

Reducing variability and choosing ideal subjects for experimental gingivitis studies.

INTRODUCTION: This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that male, non-smokers, aged 25-50 years, with a proven track record of developing gingivitis would provide suitable subjects for experimental gingivitis studies because the inter-subject variation would be greatly reduced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were required to be men aged between 25 and 50 years, in good general health with at least four sound teeth in one posterior quadrant of the mandible. Subjects who were smokers, taking antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs or had any other medical, surgical or social condition mak

[Relation between biofilm, caries activity and gingivitis in HIV + children].

The utilization of medicines to treat HIV-infected children has been promoting a decrease in the prevalence of soft-tissue oral lesions, as years pass by. In contrast, it has been observed that the experience of caries and gingivitis is constant in this population, mostly because of the chronic influence of some factors involved in the HIV-infection process, such as the chronic utilization of sweetened liquid medicines and carbohydrate-enriched diet, as well as frequent episodes of hospitalization. So, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if the quality and quantity of biofilm are importa

Microbiological aspects of the chemical control of plaque and gingivitis.

Antimicrobial agents, delivered either by mouthrinse or toothpaste, can be used to maintain plaque at levels compatible with oral health by (a) reducing existing plaque, (b) preventing the formation of new plaque, (c) selectively inhibiting those particular bacteria that are associated with disease, and (d) inhibiting the expression of virulence determinants. Although many antimicrobial agents would appear to be suitable for plaque control, few have been found to possess clinical efficacy. This is because of inherent problems in the mode of action of agents in the mouth, and with difficulties

Mechanical devices versus antimicrobial rinses in plaque and gingivitis reduction.

The effectiveness of mechanical oral cleaning and oral antimicrobial rinses was compared for gingivitis and bacterial plaque control in 158 subjects. Teeth were brushed ad lib throughout; four of the five groups used either an interdental cleaner, dental floss, an essential oil mouthwash or a cetypyridinium mouthwash. Gingival bleeding (EIBI), visual inflammation (VGI), and tooth plaque coverage were evaluated at zero, six and 12 weeks of product use. After six weeks, bleeding reduction was 42% greater for the interdental cleaner and 21% greater for the dental floss than for the control. All g

Measurement of chemiluminescence (CL) produced by phagocytic cells spontaneously or upon stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) was performed in patients with gingivitis and adult periodontitis, and in control healthy subjects. The study was performed simultaneously on phagocytic cells obtained from peripheral blood and from gingival blood, and on crevicular leukocytes. An elevated CL production was obtained in quiescent and PMA-stimulated phagocytic cells from peripheral blood in patients with gingivitis or periodontitis compared to non-diseased controls.
