Bacteremia originating from the oral cavity is common, but the role of bacteremia in the genesis of infective endocarditis and other distant site infections is unclear. Only a small percentage of oral flora have been associated with distant site infection. Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain an important cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality and generate considerable additional healthcare and societal costs. Most SSIs are caused by skin-derived bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci. The effects of increased doses of mixed-field neutron-gamma-photon irradiation on bacterial translocation and subsequent sepsis, and the influence of antimicrobial therapy on these events, were studied in the C3H/HeN mouse. Animals were given 4.25, 4.50, 4.75, 5.00 and 5.25 Gy of mixed-field [n/(n+gamma) = 0.7] radiation. The mortality rate of mice and recovery of bacteria were directly related to the radiation dose. Enterobacteriaceae were mostly isolated from the livers of mice exposed to 5.00 and 5.25 Gy, and aerobic Gram-positive cocci were recovered from those exposed to 4.50 and 4.75 Gy.

A 66-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) was brought to the emergency room with seizures and high-grade fever. Seizure in adult NF1 patients raises concern for intracranial lesions. We report a case of microbial keratitis in a patient with lamellar ichthyosis. An 11-year-old boy, a known case of lamellar ichthyosis, presented with microbial keratitis. Microbiological evaluation of corneal scraping revealed a mixed infection caused by gram-negative bacilli and gram-positive cocci. He was treated with topical ciprofloxacin and fortified cefazolin eyedrops. Microbial keratitis in patients with lamellar ichthyosis has a poor prognosis.

Infantile acute dacryocystitis is an acute inflammation of the lacrimal sac in infants. The most common pathogens are Gram-positive cocci and Gram-negative rods. We report a case of infantile polymicrobial acute dacryocystitis. A 6-week-old girl presented emergently with eye edema, discharge, and fever. Symptoms resolved with nasolacrimal probing and systemic antibiotics. Intraoperative cultures were positive for Serratia marcescens, Haemophilus aphrophilus, and Prevotella intermedia.
