Female-on-female child sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Research on child sexual abuse (CSA) tends to focus on research and prevention efforts centered on male perpetrators yet estimates show females may be responsible for up to 20% of offenses. Female-on-female child sexual abuse (FFCSA) remains an especially understudied area, with prior studies being limited to mother-daughter incest. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the abuse characteristics and use of sexual grooming in FFCSA. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included 63 adult survivors of FFCSA who reside in the United States who completed an online, anonymous self-re

Assessment of jaw movements by magnetic sensor in relation to topographies of orofacial behaviour in freely moving rats: Studies with the dopamine D(1)-like receptor agonists SKF 83822 vs SKF 83959.

This study applies new magnetic sensor-electromyographic technology for recording jaw movements in freely moving rats to analyse topographies of orofacial movement that occur in association with individual elements of behaviour under challenge with two dopamine D(1)-like receptor agonists, SKF 83822 ([R/S]-6-chloro-7, 8-dihydroxy-3-allyl-1-[3-methyl-phenyl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine) and SKF 83959([R/S]-3-methyl-6-chloro-7, 8-dihydroxy-1-[3-methyl-phenyl]-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine). Effects of artificially induced infestations of the cattle louse, Linognathus vituli.

Groups of White Shorthorn calves, stanchioned to prevent self-grooming and given high or low levels of nutrition, were exposed to artificial infestations of the cattle louse, Linognathus vituli. Undernutrition caused a significant (P = 0.03) increase in lice numbers. Lice did not significantly affect percentages of packed cells, lymphocytes, polymorphs and eosinophils or the number of red and white cells. Calves were always able to control lice infestations without self-grooming.

The effects of some factors on the time to first successful stand up and sucking of native lambs after parturition.

The study aimed to identify the effects of birth time, birth weight, and the time to first grooming on the time to first successful stand up and sucking of the pure and crossbred native lambs. Data were recorded from pure (22 B-Bafra and 20 AKK-Akkaraman) and crossbred (19 BA F1 (B × AKK) and 13 BA B1 (B × F1)) lambs during the first 3 h after delivery. The time to first successful stand up of lambs was significantly affected by the birth time (P = 0.045), the time to first grooming (P = 0.000), and the time to first successful sucking (P = 0.000). Genotype significantly affects the time to fi

Survival mechanisms of preselected breeder honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies under Varroa-infestation: Selective breeding of natural selection.

Including other stressors, global losses of honeybee colonies are attributed to Varroa destructor. Among control measures, breeding resistant bee strains are promising and eco-friendly, though the mechanisms involved are complex. This study evaluated mite fall, mite population, colony development (brood and adult population), and viral infestations across three groups: Group A (hygienic, low grooming), Group B (non-hygienic, high grooming), and Group C (Intermediate traits) from June to October 2024. Groups B and C had lower colony mortality than Group A. Although the average number of fallen

Long-term alterations in the maternal behavior of neonatally undernourished rats.

The effect of early food and sensory deprivation on the maternal responsiveness of female rats was investigated. Animals that were neonatally undernourished by daily mother-litter separation (involving both food and sensory deprivation) showed significant deficits in maternal care, consisting of a reduction in nest rating, nursing time, and retrieving responses. Moreover, they exhibited exaggerated grooming and circling movements in comparison with the controls. Dams neonatally undernourished by the nipple-ligation of their mothers (a method that minimizes sensory deprivation) displayed less a

Cerebellar Contributions to Hypokinetic Symptoms in an Acute Lesion Parkinsonism Model.

Background: Parkinsonism, characterized by motor symptoms, is typically attributed to basal ganglia dysfunction. Recent evidence suggests that the cerebellum may also influence these symptoms. This study investigated Crus II, the dentate nucleus (DN), and the inferior olive (IO) in a rat model of parkinsonism induced by a bilateral ventrolateral striatal (VLS) lesion. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into control (n = 12) and experimental (n = 12) groups. Monopolar electrodes were implanted in target structures. The experimental group received a bilateral VLS le

Psychopharmacological potentials of methanol leaf extract of Securinega virosa Roxb (Ex Willd) Baill. in mice.

Schizophrenia is a highly disabling chronic psychiatric illness. The existing antipsychotic agents are associated with untoward effects and drug interactions leading to the intensification of search for newer agents with better efficacy and safety profile. Securinega virosa is a commonly used medicinal plant in African traditional medicine. The decoction of the leaves of the plant in combination with other plants is used in the management of mental illness. In this study, we evaluate the antipsychotic potential of the methanol leaf extract (25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1)) of the plant using apomorph

Differential interaction of neuroleptics with apomorphine-induced behavior in rats as a function of changing levels of dopamine receptor stimulation.

Twenty-two neuroleptic drugs were studied for interaction with the behavior induced by intravenous injection of apomorphine in rats. All compounds dose-dependently shortened the duration of the apomorphine-induced agitation and-with the exception of clozapine-shortened the onset of the de-arousal grooming that typically occurs immediately after the agitation phase has been terminated. Progressively higher doses were required to antagonize higher levels of apomorphine at earlier time intervals after the intravenous injection. The compounds also decreased palpebral opening, and most of them supp

Cosmetics in blacks.

Blacks comprise a phenotypically heterogeneous group with respect to skin and hair. They are uniquely multihued with at least 35 different possible shades of pigmentation, and there is considerable variability in hair texture. This accounts for many of the unique skin and hair cosmetic requirements and customs in the black race. These grooming practices may present perplexing problems for the dermatologist when viewed in the context of resultant skin disease; therefore, an awareness and understanding of skin and hair products used by blacks, grooming techniques, and their consequences are esse

Quantifying the impact of braiding and combing on the integrity of natural African hair.

BACKGROUND: Afro hair breakage is most commonly attributed to grooming practices such as braiding, hair extensions and weaves, both for chemically treated hair and natural Afro hair. These grooming practices are also frequently associated with traction alopecia in clinical studies. However, there is little to no quantitative scientific data on the surface and internal hair fibre damage caused by grooming, including combing, on Afro hair. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, cuticle cohesion and tensile testing were used to determine the effect

The evolutionary origin of human kissing.

A kiss has been a signal of special affection across continents and cultures for millennia. Between times and peoples, social norms invariably prescribe kissing to specific affiliations and contexts, implying deeper biological bases. Why the protruding of the lips and slight suction when touching another? Capuchin monkeys stick their fingers in their friends' eyes as sign of affection, why have humans developed kissing? Here I briefly review proposed hypotheses for the evolution of human kissing. Great ape social behavior suggests that kissing is likely the conserved final mouth-contact stage

Repetitive behaviors in the Shank1 knockout mouse model for autism spectrum disorder: developmental aspects and effects of social context.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social behavior and communication, together with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Several ASD candidate genes have been identified, including the SHANK gene family with its three family members SHANK1, SHANK2, and SHANK3. METHODS: Typically, repetitive behavior in mouse models for ASD is assessed by measuring self-grooming behavior. The first aim of the current study was to assess repetitive behaviors in Shank1(-/-) null mutant, Shank1(+/-) heterozygous, and Shank1(+/+) wildtype littermate con

A comparison of behavioural effects of prenatally administered oxazepam in mice exposed to open-fields in the laboratory and the real world.

Prenatal benzodiazepine exposure has been reported to result in abnormal neurobehavioural development in laboratory animals but little is known about the behavioural relevance of this effect ina naturalistic environment. In this study, outbred CD-1 male mice were prenatally exposed to oxazepam (15 mg/kg per os, twice daily) on days 12-16 of fetal life and fostered at birth to untreated dams. At adulthood, each mouse was fitted with a radio collar and its first reactions assessed. Three hours later, behavioural and exploratory activities were recorded in a laboratory open field, and 24 h later

Serotonin 6 receptor blockade reduces repetitive behavior in the BTBR mouse model of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by the expression of restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and impairments in social recognition and communication. Previous studies have found that specific serotonin (5-HT) receptor modulation can attenuate repetitive behaviors expressed in specific mouse strains. The present study examined how 5-HT6 receptor blockade impacts the expression of repetitive behaviors in two different mouse strains that demonstrate elevated restricted, repetitive behavior and impairments in social behavior. BTBR T+ Itpr3tf /J (BTBR), C58/J (C58) and control C57BL/

Evaluation of psychotropic drugs with a modified open field test.

The open field test used to study behavioral alterations induced by psychotropic drugs is based mainly in the defecation, ambulation, rearing and grooming presented by animals subjected to the test. Because of the criticisms raised against the defecation score as a measure of the central effects of drugs, in the present experiment a modification of the test is proposed for the rat. The main points that characterize the new procedure are: (1) defecation scores are not considered; (2) besides ambulation, rearing and grooming, immobility was also recorded; (3) the total time of observation was in

The Number of Louse Eggs on Wild Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) Varies with Age, but Not with Sex or Season.

During grooming, primates remove harmful ectoparasites, such as ticks and lice, and there is direct evidence for a health benefit of tick removal. Grooming behaviors differ among primates with respect to age and sex. Moreover, the number of ectoparasite may exhibit seasonal variation. Therefore the number of ectoparasites on a host may vary with effects, host age and sex, and season. However, these effects have not been a focus of louse infestation studies of primates. Grooming in Japanese macaques is related to sex and age, with developmental changes in behavior corresponding to the timing of

Behaviour-associated alopecia areata in mice.

In 5 different mouse strains, we observed alopecic lesions most commonly in male breeding animals kept with C57BL females. Alopecic areas were located most frequently on the head, but were also found over the shoulders, the back and the pelvic regions. Observations gained through time-lapse photography indicate the cause is a slight increase in self-grooming and a dramatic increase in allogrooming by their female partners. The increased frequency of lesions of males kept with C57BL females suggests that the increased grooming activity may be genetically determined.

Effects of environmental enrichment and stereotypic behavior on maternal behavior and infant viability in a model carnivore, the American mink (Neovison vison).

In several species, stress compromises maternal behaviors that are important for infant viability (e.g. licking and grooming). Understanding how stress in captivity affects maternal behavior could therefore be beneficial, especially for carnivores in zoos and breeding centers where infant mortality is often high. We used a model carnivore--American mink--to test two hypotheses, namely that maternal investment and/or behavior is i. improved by environmental enrichment; and ii. compromised by stereotypic behavior. We observed 22 females raised in an indoor facility, 9 enriched, 13 non-enriched.
