Association between muscle oxygenation dynamics and cardiac workload and ventilation during exercise.

BACKGROUND: Although high muscle oxygenation dynamics in active muscles are expected to decrease cardiac workload and ventilation associated with carbon dioxide excretion at an exercise at equivalent peak oxygen uptake (VO<inf>2</inf>) loads in the whole body, these relationships remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether high muscle oxygenation dynamics contribute to reduced cardiac workload and ventilation during exercise. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy young males were enrolled in this cross-sectional study and divided into two groups: the low muscle oxygenation dynami

NR4A1 Aggravates Myocardial Ischaemia-Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting OPA1-Mediated Mitochondrial Fusion.

Mitochondrial fusion is an important process that protects the myocardium. However, mitochondrial fusion is often inhibited in myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury (IR). The upstream mechanism of this effect is unclear. Nuclear receptor subfamily 4 group A member 1 (NR4A1) can aggravate myocardial IR and increase the level of oxidative stress, thereby affecting mitochondrial function and morphology. Inhibiting NR4A1 can improve oxidative stress levels and mitochondrial function and morphology, thereby reducing IR. Downregulating NR4A1 increases the expression level of the mitochondrial fusi

Dynamics and concordance alterations of regional brain function indices in vestibular migraine: a resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Prior MRI studies on vestibular migraine (VM) have revealed abnormalities in static regional intrinsic brain activity (iBA) and dynamic functional connectivity between brain regions or networks. However, the temporal variation and concordance of regional iBA measures remain to be explored. METHODS: 57 VM patients during the interictal period were compared to 88 healthy controls (HC) in this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. The dynamics and concordance of regional iBA indices, including amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional hom

Situational analysis.

Situational analysis is a qualitative method that allows the analyst to examine highly complex and locally specific situations. As primary care evolves to include increasingly specialized and varied interprofessional collaborative and person-centered care teams, this method may prove valuable to understanding how such teams operate. Situational analysis, an offshoot of grounded theory, provides an accessible but robust methodology for analyzing the situations researchers are interested in and the kind of differences that exist within them, such as situations where groups intersect while workin

Posttraumatic ventriculomegaly: hydrocephalus or atrophy? A new approach for diagnosis using CSF dynamics.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics were correlated to the changes in ventricular size during the first 3 months posttrauma in patients with severe head injury (Glasgow Coma Scale score < or = 8, 75 patients) to distinguish between atrophy and hydrocephalus as the two possible causes of posttraumatic ventriculomegaly. Using the bolus injection technique, the baseline intracranial pressure (ICP), pressure volume index, and resistance for CSF absorption (R0) provided a three-dimensional profile of CSF dynamics that was correlated with ventricular size and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) score at 3, 6

Multidimensional Recurrence Quantification Analysis (MdRQA) for the Analysis of Multidimensional Time-Series: A Software Implementation in MATLAB and Its Application to Group-Level Data in Joint Action.

We introduce Multidimensional Recurrence Quantification Analysis (MdRQA) as a tool to analyze multidimensional time-series data. We show how MdRQA can be used to capture the dynamics of high-dimensional signals, and how MdRQA can be used to assess coupling between two or more variables. In particular, we describe applications of the method in research on joint and collective action, as it provides a coherent analysis framework to systematically investigate dynamics at different group levels-from individual dynamics, to dyadic dynamics, up to global group-level of arbitrary size. Defining multilevel interventions to improve type 2 diabetes management for Black patients in North Florida: a community-based systems dynamics approach.

BACKGROUND: Racism is a driver of community health disparities, and there is a dearth of evidence-based multilevel antiracism interventions developed in partnership with community constituents. Community-engaged systems science defines intervention points within complex systems and was utilized for early-phase multilevel intervention development within the ORBIT translational model to improve type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management among Black patients in the South. METHODS: Group model-building sessions were conducted with five primary care physicians, thirteen nurses, six support staff, and nine

An integrated in silico and in vitro approach to decipher the anti-tubercular potential of novel thiazetidine scaffolds.

The increasing global health concerns posed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) necessitates the development of novel therapeutic agents targeting essential and host-absent biochemical pathways. This study explores a novel series of thiazetidine derivatives as potential inhibitors against two crucial enzymes of the MTb's shikimate pathway: chorismate mutase (CM) and shikimate kinase (SK). Their interactions with CM and SK were characterized following different experimental and computational approaches. Experimental binding assays revealed strong affinities, particularly for compounds 4 g (Kd =

Atomistic Modeling of Bio-Nano Hybrids: Interactions between Iron Oxide Nanoparticles and the Outer Membrane of Shewanella.

Dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria transfer electrons to the external surface of metal oxides during their anaerobic respiration. Combining these bacteria with iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) supports continuous redox processes for bioremediation and bioenergy, yet their molecular interactions between iron oxide NPs and the extracellular membrane, which regulate extracellular electron transfer, remain unexplored. This work investigates the adsorption of an iron oxide (α-Fe2O3) NP with a 3.6 nm diameter onto the outer membrane (OM) of Shewanella in the absence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and

Prediction of mortality benefit based on periodic repolarisation dynamics in patients undergoing prophylactic implantation of a defibrillator: a prospective, controlled, multicentre cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A small proportion of patients undergoing primary prophylactic implantation of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) experiences malignant arrhythmias. We postulated that periodic repolarisation dynamics, a novel marker of sympathetic-activity-associated repolarisation instability, could be used to identify electrically vulnerable patients who would benefit from prophylactic implantation of ICDs by way of a reduction in mortality. METHODS: We did a prespecified substudy of EUropean Comparative Effectiveness Research to Assess the Use of Primary ProphylacTic Implantable Ca

Differences and commonalities in barriers and facilitators experienced by participants enrolled in an online behavioral weight management program: A qualitative comparison.

Online behavioral weight management programs offer a scalable solution to address overweight and obesity but often face high dropout rates and variable success. Understanding the barriers and facilitators experienced by participants who achieve weight loss targets versus those who do not is critical for optimizing programs. This study compared the barriers and facilitators reported by participants achieving ≥5% weight loss with those achieving <5%, using a social-ecological framework to capture influences across individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels. The framework was chosen to r

Irritability: associations with real-time affect dynamics, social interactions, and daily substance use in older adolescents.

Irritability is a common and clinically significant symptom associated with a wide range of negative outcomes. Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a valuable tool for capturing experiences, such as emotions, social interactions, and substance use in real-time, and may be useful in understanding how irritability is related to everyday functioning. We investigated cross-sectional associations between a widely used self-report irritability rating scale and affect dynamics, social interactions, and substance use captured with EMA (5 surveys daily for 14 days) in 349 18-year-olds. We also exam

Social interactions in isolated, confined, and extreme environments: A study of Antarctic winter teams using wearable sensors.

Long-duration space missions expose crews to extreme psychological and social stressors due to prolonged isolation and confinement. To examine how such conditions impact individual and team functioning, we studied a 10-mo Antarctic overwintering mission at Concordia Station, an analog for spaceflight, using self-report measures and wearable proximity sensors. Twelve crew members were assessed at four time-points. Results revealed a progressive increase in feelings of loneliness and conflict, while cohesion and individual performance declined. Close-range interactions were positively associated
