OBJECTIVES: A rapid evolution has occurred in state policy and industry practices relative to assisted living and expanded use of residential care facilities for people with physical and cognitive frailty, yet relatively little is known about the interrelationship between this housing supply and nursing-home case mix.
METHODS: The association between residential care supply and the proportion of cognitively and physically impaired nursing facility residents was examined in more than 1,500 facilities in five states.
RESULTS: The proportion of nursing-home cases with only physical and cognitiv

Background: Older adults commonly experience a progressive decline in functional capacity and exercise tolerance, particularly among residents of residential care homes. Advanced age is associated with a higher prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and arterial hypertension, both of which further reduce physical activity levels. Evidence indicates that regular, structured physical activity can improve physical functioning and cardiovascular parameters. This study aimed to assess functional capacity and exercise tolerance in residential care home residents with treated arterial hypertensio

INTRODUCTION: Acute pain is a prevalent problem for dementia residents in nursing homes. A variety of intervention strategies have been applied to address this problem. However, there remains an issue of inadequate pain control. This study aims to explore the analgesic efficacy of auricular acupressure (AA) for dementia residents with acute pain in nursing homes.
METHODS: A multicenter, single-blind, randomized, and sham-controlled clinical trial was performed in three nursing homes in Yinchuan, China. All of the 206 eligible patients with acute pain were randomly divided into two groups for

BACKGROUND: Veterans who nearing the end of life (EOL) in unstable housing are not adequately served by current palliative care or homeless programs.
METHODS: Multidisciplinary focus groups, interviews with community and Veterans Affairs (VA) leaders and with 29 homeless veterans were conducted in five cities. A forum of national palliative and homelessness care leaders (n=5) and representatives from each focus group (n=10), then convened. The forum used Nominal Group Process to suggest improvements in EOL care for veterans without homes. Modified Delphi Process was used to consolidate and pr

Objective Although acute care hospitals address pneumonia through antibiotic therapy and provide in-hospital swallowing rehabilitation conducted by speech-language pathologists, post-discharge follow-up is often insufficient. In particular, limited attention is given to monitoring the recurrence of pneumonia and the status of oral intake once residents return to their nursing homes. The aim of this study was to determine the benefits of collaboration between acute care hospitals and nursing homes for dysphagia and whether swallowing tests are a predictor of the development of pneumonia. Method

The dynamic processes and the way they interact in shaping a care system for demented patients are analyzed and discussed. The development of disability/dependency, interpreted in a simulation model based on Katz's index of ADL and Berger's scale "Rating the severity of senility," gave insight into the interplay of four care levels: psychogeriatric long-term care for patients with severe behavioral disturbances, nursing-home care for patients with highly reduced ADL capacity who are often moderately to severely demented, group-living care for the demented with less dominating ADL dependency, a

INTRODUCTION: Early integration of a palliative care approach into the care of dependent older adults constitutes a public health concern owing to multiple factors.
STUDY AIM: To explore the perceptions of nursing home professionals toward palliative care in order to understand how these perceptions influence the adoption of a palliative care approach in residents’ care.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using a multiple case study approach. Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were held with professionals from 21 nursing homes. Data were analyzed using a

AIM: The goal of this study was to clarify how the post-discharge support by a full time psychiatric social worker (PSW) in a dementia ward affected the discharge status of dementia patients.
METHODS: Patients who were discharged from a dementia ward were examined for hospitalization, post-discharge status, nutrition methods, treatment drugs, and relationship with discharge support performed by the PSW.
RESULTS: A total of 192 cases met the requirements for this examination, and approximately half (94, 49.0%) of these patients had Alzheimer disease. Fifty-two patients (32.3%) moved to home c

The frequency and causes of vitamin D deficiency in old age were investigated in 53 hospital patients, 88 persons from old people's homes, 21 tenants of a hostel, and 29 members of a seniors meeting group, aged between 65 and 93 years. In all persons 25-hydroxyvitamin D, calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, leucine arylamidase and creatinine were determined. In 27 cases immunoreactive parathormone was measured. In hospital patients there was evidence of vitamin D deficiency significantly more frequently as compared with the other groups. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was on averag

Supportive housing programs such as the Community Homes for Opportunity (CHO) that provide combined formal (off-site healthcare providers) and informal (on-site supports are effective in reducing erratic housing and homelessness. This study explored the views of the Community Mental Health Agency staff on their experiences with the CHO and related changes for further improvement of the program. We applied focused ethnographic techniques to recruit 47 agency staff from 28 group homes in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Focus group discussions were conducted at two-time points (baseline-spring 2018

Floor dust was collected in the wintertime from the homes of 61 children sensitized to house dust mites, 57 children with sensitization to other aeroallergens, and 57 nonatopic control children. The dust was cultivated and microfungal growth was identified microscopically. Indoor humidity was measured, and condensation on windowpanes was registered during 1 winter week. Housing and sociodemographic and symptom data were obtained by a questionnaire. Penicillium, Alternaria, and Cladosporium were the three most common microfungi. The mean total number of colony-forming units per 30 mg of dust wa

To assess the performance of two wound dressings in the management of chronic wounds, a 5-year retrospective descriptive study was conducted involving 4,200 wounds in 1,891 residents of 30 nursing homes in the state of Florida. Wound and patient variables were abstracted from charts completed by the wound care clinicians providing care in the nursing homes. The chart abstraction time period was chosen to capture a change in wound dressing regimens in these nursing homes. Patient demographic and wound assessment variables, including evidence of surrounding skin stripping information, were abstr

In view of the fact that Swedish nursing home care represents an integrated form of residential housing and health care and it is not possible to classify infections as either "health-care-associated" or "community-acquired". Thus it is not appropriate to use the same surveillance systems as those used in hospitals. The presence of known risk factors for infection--either related to medical devices or due to underlying illness--could however be monitored. Antibiotic treatment favours selection of resistant bacterial strains and should thus be used with prudence. At December 8th, 2000, we inves

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia commonly drive psychotropic prescribing in residential care. Doll therapy is a person-centered, attachment-informed intervention that may reduce distress and support engagement, but evidence from Chinese nursing homes remains limited. This protocol describes an exploratory pilot and feasibility mixed-methods cluster randomized controlled trial of a staff-mediated doll-therapy care package plus routine nursing care versus routine nursing care alone.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Phase I is a pragmatic, parallel-group, 1:1 cluster randomized

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with serious complications. Residents of nursing homes are particularly vulnerable to developing delirium. Nurses play a key role in the prevention, detection, and management of delirium but often report a lack of specific knowledge and understanding. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a tailored e-learning programme on delirium for nurses working in German nursing homes. METHODS: This pilot study employed a single-group pre-post design. Between January and March 2025, nurses from German nursing homes completed a del

A population survey of 1000 7 year old children found a significant excess of wheeze among children whose homes were reported to be mouldy (odds ratio 3.70, 95% confidence limits 2.22, 6.15). The airborne mould flora was quantified by repeated volumetric sampling during the winter in three rooms of the homes of 88 children. All of these had previously completed spirometric tests before and after a six minute free running exercise challenge. Total airborne mould counts varied from 0 to 41,000 colony forming units (CFU)/m3, but were generally in the range 50-1500 CFU/m3, much lower than the conc

Background and Objectives: The number of residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) is expected to increase. Determining the epidemiological situation in the context of organizational conditions is therefore extremely important for planning the necessary future activities in the field of infection prevention. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence rates in Polish nursing vs. residential homes, in the context of the medical and functional burdens of residents and the organizational conditions of both types of units. Material and Methods: the data that were analyzed came from a

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is prevalent in the elderly and persons with complex medical conditions, resulting in considerable medical and psychosocial consequences and reduced quality of life. Many prevalence studies regard OD in relation to age or diagnosis. Knowledge on the prevalence of OD in different healthcare settings is lacking. This systematic review aimed to estimate the prevalence of OD in adults admitted to hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, and palliative care facilities through meta-analyses. A systematic literature search was completed including all dates up
