Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) has been reported to stimulate growth hormone (GH) release in a variety of pathological conditions, including some studies of major depression. Because of the considerable phenomenological and neuroendocrine overlap between major depression and panic disorder, we investigated the rate of positive GH responses to TRH in 38 patients with panic disorder and 23 normal controls. There were no between-group differences in mean GH response to TRH or in the proportion of subjects with positive responses. These findings are discussed in the context of neuroendocrine

Asmundson and Asmundson's (2018) bibliometric study demonstrates that the anxiety disorders remain a major focus of clinical research. Yet striking differences emerged among these syndromes. For example, in contrast to panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder has increasingly flourished as a major focus of publications. The purpose of my commentary is to discuss the basis for the remarkable success of traumatology relative to other areas (e.g., panic disorder research).

BACKGROUND The immune system may have a role in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including typical and atypical autism. The aim of this study was to determine whether a cytokine and growth factor panel could be identified for the diagnosis and prognosis in children with ASD, including typical and atypical autism. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 26 children with ASD (typical or atypical) and 11 of their siblings who did not have ASD. A panel of ten serum cytokines and growth factors were investigated using addressable laser bead assay (ALBIA) and enzyme-linked immuno

Previous animal studies have suggested that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) could be associated with depression- and anxiety-related behaviors. Our aim was to relate serum HGF levels with State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Profile of Mood State (POMS), and Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) scores in patients with panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) and healthy controls. We examined 67 patients with panic disorders and 97 controls. Patients were split into two groups according to whether they exhibited a 50% improvement in test scores (good/high response group: n = 26) or

Verbal skills were assessed at approximately ages 2, 3, 5, and 9 years for 206 children with a clinical diagnosis of autism (n = 98), pervasive developmental disorders-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS; n = 58), or nonspectrum developmental disabilities (n = 50). Growth curve analyses were used to analyze verbal skills trajectories over time. Nonverbal IQ and joint attention emerged as strong positive predictors of verbal outcome. The gap between the autism and other 2 groups widened with time as the latter improved at a higher rate. However, there was considerable variability within diagnostic

The case is compelling for the involvement of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the pathogenesis of lower urinary tract disease, especially in conditions with altered neural function. Remodeling of the micturition pathways occurs following experimental bladder-outlet obstruction, denervation, spinal cord injury, cystitis, and diabetes mellitus. Clinically, NGF levels are elevated in the bladders of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, women with interstitial cystitis and in patients with idiopathic overactive bladder. Blockade of NGF, using either an endogenous antibody or an antibody against the

80 children aged 1-3 years were examined. They were divided into 3 groups by the degree and structure of disorders of mental development: children with predominant delay of speech development (group 1); with a delay of psychic development due to organic damage of CNS (group 2); with deviation of psychic development and the most pronounced psychopathologic symptomatology (group 3). There was a significant (p < 0.001) elevation in the blood level of autoantibodies to nerve growth factor (NGF) in children from all groups as compared with control one (0.75 +/- 0.24 OD units). The level of such aut

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a clinical predictive model for predicting the likelihood of a poor therapeutic response during the first year of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment in children with growth disorders.
METHODS: A total of 627 pediatric patients with growth disorders (GHD, ISS, TS, SGA) from The LG Growth Study cohort were evaluated. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were utilized to investigate the association between predictors and the risk of poor rhGH response. Variables were selected using LASSO regression, and multivariate logistic

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fetal growth restriction (FGR), formerly known as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), is defined as a fetus' failure to reach its genetically predetermined growth potential. FGR has also been implicated in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), though strong supporting literature has yet to be published. This study aims to review the existing associations between FGR and autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as studied in relevant literature, as well as the mechanisms that

Although previous reports have documented mean-level declines in personality disorder (PD) symptoms over time, little is known about whether personality pathology sometimes emerges among nonsymptomatic adults, or whether rates of change differ qualitatively among symptomatic persons. Our study sought to characterize heterogeneity in the longitudinal course of PD symptoms with the goal of testing for and describing latent trajectories. Participants were 250 young adults selected into two groups using a PD screening measure: those who met diagnostic criteria for a DSM-III-R PD (PPD, n = 129), an

Stress-induced upregulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6) signaling and its downstream pathophysiological consequences have garnered considerable attention in recent years. However, no comprehensive review has specifically examined the association between stress-induced IL-6 and its implications for bone health in children. During childhood, linear growth and peak bone mass acquisition are tightly regulated processes. Hence, this review aims to investigate current evidence on stress-induced IL-6 upregulation and its detrimental effects on pediatric bone health. Findings from animal models, knockout

OBJECTIVE: Fetal growth restriction is associated with increased perinatal mortality and morbidity. We aimed to evaluate whether the combined assessment of birthweight centile (BWc) and cerebroplacental ratio expressed as multiples of the median (CPR MoM) during the late third trimester can identify distinct risk profiles for intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC) in late-onset fetal growth disorders and to propose a risk-based classification to guide birth management.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 1530 singleton pregnancies with births between 34 and 41 weeks' gestatio

Transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) is a severe genetic chronic hemolytic disease, and growth retardation is a common clinical feature in patients with TDT. Due to the need for regular blood transfusions, these patients often experience iron overload, which leads to various endocrine dysfunctions, including abnormalities in the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor axis, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, hypogonadism, adrenal insufficiency, and decreased bone density. This paper reviews the clinical monitoring and intervention measures for growth disorders and related endocrine funct

BACKGROUND: Children born very preterm (VP) display altered growth in corticolimbic structures compared with full-term peers. Given the association between the cortiocolimbic system and anxiety, this study aimed to compare developmental trajectories of corticolimbic regions in VP children with and without anxiety diagnosis at 13 years.
METHODS: MRI data from 124 VP children were used to calculate whole brain and corticolimbic region volumes at term-equivalent age (TEA), 7 and 13 years. The presence of an anxiety disorder was assessed at 13 years using a structured clinical interview.

BACKGROUND: Severe malocclusions appear in up to 20 per cent of the population. Many neuropsychiatric diseases are likely to have a neurodevelopmental, partially genetic background with their origins as early as fetal life. However, the possible relationship between neurodevelopmental disorders and severe malocclusions is unclear. The aim of this study was in a population-based setting (270 000 inhabitants) to investigate whether patients with severe malocclusions have more mental and behavioural disorders and growth or speech problems than controls without severe malocclusion.

Marfan Syndrome (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz Syndrome (LDS) represent heritable connective tissue disorders that cosegregate with a similar pattern of cardiovascular defects (thoracic aortic aneurysm, mitral valve prolapse/regurgitation, and aortic root dilatation with regurgitation). This pattern of cardiovascular defects appears to be expressed along a spectrum of severity in many heritable connective tissue disorders and raises suspicion of a relationship between the normal development of connective tissues and the cardiovascular system. Given the evidence of increased transforming growth factor-b

Satellite cells (SCs) are the muscle stem cells responsible for longitudinal and cross-sectional postnatal growth and repair after injury and which provide new myonuclei when needed. We review their morphology and contribution to development and their role in sarcomere and myonuclear addition. SCs, similar to other tissue stem cells, cycle through different states, such as quiescence, activation, and self-renewal, and thus we consider the signaling mechanisms involved in maintenance of these states. The role of the SC niche and their interactions with other cells, such as fibroblasts and the e

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/VEGF receptor pathways are essential for the regulation of angiogenesis during embryonic development and tumor progression. VEGF receptor 1 (VEGFR-1) has been shown to promote tumor growth and metastasis through the regulation of multiple biological functions in cancer cells, vasculature, stroma and other tumor-associated cells. VEGFR-1 signaling is required for the survival of endothelial cells and macrophages and the mobilization of cancer cells, endothelial cells, myeloid progenitors, and monocyte/macrophages. VEGFR-1 was reported to have a func
