It is a common clinical practice to estimate FSH, LH and testosterone levels in patients with unilateral undescended testis (U/L UDT) as a prognostic pointer to fertility potential. Is this practice correct? To ascertain this aspect, new born rats were operated to create experimental U/L UDT by gubernaculectomy and anchoring the gubernaculum to anterior abdominal wall. Fertility and hormone levels were evaluated later in adult life. Though fertility of rats with U/L UDT was significantly less (p < 0.01) than the controls, no significant alterations were found in the levels of serum testosteron

The gubernaculum, a cordlike structure that extends from the testis to the scrotum and guides the testis in its descent, has a bulbous termination, the pars infravaginalis gubernaculi. We reviewed seven surgically proved cases in which the pars infravaginalis gubernaculi was mistaken for an undescended testis on imaging studies. The studies included sonography (five cases), CT (two cases), and MR imaging (two cases). Identification of the mediastinum testis on sonograms or MR images confirms that a structure is testis and not the pars infravaginalis gubernaculi. In two of these patients, testi

As many as 50 per cent of explorations for intrascrotal masses result in orchiectomy for benign disease. The most common diagnoses are hydrocele, epididymitis and benign testicular tumors. Many of these diagnoses could be made before orchiectomy if the tunica vaginalis and, occasionally, the tunica albuginea were opened, and the lesion biopsied. However, violation of the testicular tunics traditionally has been considered taboo because of the dangers of tumor seeding. In 1906 Chevassu suggested inguinal exploration and occlusion of the testicular vessels before biopsy of suspicious lesions. We

In this paper we have described the case of a 7-yr-old Moroccan osteopetrotic boy, who had received a bone marrow transplant (BMT). He was transplanted from his older brother and, despite immunosuppressive therapy, developed chronic graft-versus-host disease and was placed on corticotherapy. Seven months after the bone marrow transplant, graft versus host disease (GVHD) was stabilized, but corticotherapy had inhibited growth. There was evidence of normalizing bone, his hearing was better but he had not recovered vision. Dental findings before the bone marrow transplant revealed some missing te

The early embryology of the elephant has never been studied before. We have obtained a rare series of African elephant (Loxodonta africana) embryos and fetuses ranging in weight from 0.04 to 18.5 g, estimated gestational ages 58-166 days (duration of gestation is approximately 660 days). Nephrostomes, a feature of aquatic vertebrates, were found in the mesonephric kidneys at all stages of development whereas they have never been recorded in the mesonephric kidneys of other viviparous mammals. The trunk was well developed even in the earliest fetus. The testes were intra-abdominal, and there wa

The testicular descent into the scrotum depends on a series of complex endocrine and mechanical interactions. The first stage or transabdominal that occurs during the first 3 months of gestation is probably produced by the differential growth of the fetus and is believed to be mediated by the Müllerian inhibiting hormone. The second stage or transinguinal migration that occurs during the 8th month of gestation is a complex event depending on the interaction between the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular hormonal axis and mechanical factors as gubernaculum, intra-abdominal pressure, epididymis.

The testosterone level in fluid contained in the tunica vaginalis has been determined in 25 adult men referred for infertility and in 20 boys aged 0-10.5 years operated on for hydrocele. The median concentrations of testosterone were found to be 392 nmole/1 (range 78-957) and 1.1 nmole/1 (range 0.16-182), respectively. The median value for adult men was 20 times the concentration of testosterone found in the peripheral blood of that group while the median value for the boys was 4 times that found in their peripheral blood. It is concluded, firstly, that the high level of testosterone in the pe

INTRODUCTION: About 0.8% of boys have undescended testes at 1 year of age. However, the overall rate of orchidopexy is 2.5 times that expected. While studies have shown ascending testes accounting for a proportion of such discrepancy, the aetiology of this ascent remains controversial. In this study, intra-operative findings of patients underwent orchidopexy for ascending testes are evaluated to infer aetiology.
METHODS: Patients with confirmed ascending testes from a single paediatric surgery unit over a four-year period from June 2015 till June 2019 were included in this observational study

BACKGROUND: Cryptorchidism is the absence of one or both testicles in the scrotum at birth, being a risk factor for testis cancer and infertility. The most effective method to treat cryptorchidism is orchiopexy, followed by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) therapy; however, a portion of treated patients do not show a significant improvement in testis volume and vascularization after adjuvant therapy.
METHODS: In this study, we generated an in vitro model to predict the patient response to hCG by cultivating and treating primary cells derived from five cryptorchid patients' biopsies of guber

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of diethylstilbestrol (DES) at different doses on transabdominal testicular descent in rats and the expression of INSL3 in the testis and HOXA10 in the gubernaculum.
METHOD: Fifty E13.5 (embryonic day 13.5) pregnant female SD rats were randomly divided into five groups that received a subcutaneous injection of DMSO, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 mg/kg DES (group A, B, C, D and E), respectively. Male offspring were killed at E19.5, and then fetal mortality, the degree of transabdominal testicular ascent (DTA) was determined by a stereomicroscope. The mRNA expressions o

Testicular Leydig cell tumors are rare neoplasms of the testes. These tumors are generally benign but malignancy and metastatic potential have been described. Here, we present a case of Leydig cell tumor in a 49-year-old male, incidentally discovered as a testicular mass. The patient had no significant previous medical history. Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic, well-defined, vascularized lesion measuring 7 × 7 × 4 mm adjacent to the tunica albuginea. The patient underwent testis sparing surgery, employing a modified approach including intraoperative ultrasound-guided localization, en-bloc

PURPOSE: To date, ten validated Arthrostoma species were reported. Here, a new hookworm species was found from Asian badger (Meles leucurus).
METHODS: Nineteen hookworms (9 males and 10 females) were collected from the small intestine of two Asian badgers in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China. The hookworms were morphologically examined according to key taxonomic characters, such as anterior extremity direction, structures of oral opening (cutting plates or teeth), vulva location, buccal capsule anatomy (integrated or formed by articulating plates), the length of spicule and

We conducted a parasitological study to identify nematodes infecting the gonads of bigeye barracuda Sphyraena forsteri Cuvier (Sphyraenidae) caught in the West Philippine Sea, off the Mariveles coast, Bataan Province, the Philippine archipelago. Males and very tiny nongravid female philometrid nematodes were collected from the ovaries of the fish. Based on light and scanning electron microscope observations, and supported by molecular analyses of the partial nucleotide sequences of the 18S small subunit ribosomal DNA, the philometrid nematode was determined to be a new species belonging to the

Numerous nematodes were found in the rectum of three fish species Synodontis ocellifer, S. nigrita, and S. schall (Mochokidae, Siluriformes) from the Gambia River and Mare Simenti, National Park Niokolo Koba, Senegal. A nematode species Raillietnema synodontisi Vassiliadès, 1973 (host S. ocellifer), is redescribed using morphometric (including scanning electron microscopy) and molecular characteristics and transferred into the genus Labeonema Puylaert, 1970. It is morphologically and metrically similar to Labeonema intermedium Puylaert, 1970, the other congeneric species (L. bainae Baker, 1982
