In 1980, when the diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was introduced into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), survivor guilt--a symptom long associated with trauma of the Holocaust and other extreme experiences--was included in the list of symptom criteria. But in the revised edition of the manual of 1987 (DSM-IIIR), survivor guilt was demoted to the status of merely an "associated feature" of the condition. Now that survivor guilt has disappeared from the official lexicon of trauma, shame has come to take its pl

Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the conduct disorders (CD) express a contrasting symptomatology, they could represent different answers to a common matrix about morality. In the literature, some theoretical models describe people with OCD as individuals who experience high levels of responsibility and guilt. On the other hand, adolescents with a CD are described as if they do not feel guilty at all or consider anti-social purposes as more important than existing moral purposes. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of forgiveness in responsibility and guilt level

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data suggest that global negative affect (NA) increases prior to and decreases following episodes of binge eating and purging, providing support for the affect regulation model of BN. The current study examined whether facets of NA are differentially related to bulimic behaviors. Women with bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 133) completed a 2-week EMA protocol. Momentary assessments of 4 facets of NA (Fear, Guilt, Hostility, and Sadness) were derived from the PANAS subscales. Trajectories of the NA facets were modeled prior to and following binge-only, purge-only,

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Body image disturbance is a well-established risk factor for eating disorders; however, the psychological mechanisms through which it exerts its influence remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the mediating roles of guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and distress in the relationship between body image disturbance and eating disorder behaviors in adults.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,576 adults aged 19-64 years from Elazığ province, Turkey. Participants completed the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ), Eating Disorder Examination

This multi-method, two-study investigation tested the hypothesis that, controlling for guilt and negative affect, shame increases following binge eating. Support for this hypothesis constitutes the first step in testing the theory that shame mediates the link between binge eating and comorbid psychopathology. Study 1 employed a laboratory binge-eating paradigm in n = 51 women [21 with bulimia nervosa, 30 controls]. Study 2 employed a naturalistic test of prospective relationships among binge eating, shame, guilt, and negative affect in n = 302 college women over three months. In Study 1, women

INTRODUCTION: Shame- and guilt-proneness represent relatively stable tendencies to experience self-conscious emotions following perceived transgressions. Shame-proneness has traditionally been linked to negative self-evaluation, whereas guilt-proneness has been associated with responsibility-taking and repair. However, both tendencies are increasingly considered in relation to broader emotional functioning and regulatory processes.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated whether the emotional-style dimensions outlook (sustained positive affect) and resilience (recovery from negative

Background: Psychophysiological dysregulations and negative alterations in cognitions and mood characterize post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (C-PTSD), contributing to an increased risk of disorder persistence and chronic health problems. However, understanding the differences in physiological stress reactivity and negative cognitive-emotional patterns between adolescents with PTSD and C-PTSD remains a notable research gap. Objective: This study examined group differences in autonomic nervous system (ANS) reactivity during the sharing of a short trauma narrative, including

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the trajectory of five types of negative affect (global negative affect, fear, guilt, hostility, sadness) prior to and following three types of eating episodes (overeating in the absence of loss of control [OE-only], loss of control eating in the absence of overeating [LOC-only], and binge eating) among obese adults using ecological momentary assessment (EMA).
METHOD: Fifty obese adults (84% female) completed a two-week EMA protocol during which they were asked to record all eating episodes and rate each episode on continua of overeating and loss of con

Psychopathy is a personality construct encompassing impaired interpersonal-affective functioning, combined with the inclination to lead an erratic lifestyle and to engage in antisocial acts. Individuals with elevated psychopathic traits often make decisions that have a negative impact on others. Some findings suggest that a lack of empathy and guilt is a key explanatory factor, while other results point toward a decreased sense of fairness in individuals with elevated psychopathic traits. The goal of the present study was to directly compare these hypotheses. Eighty-six healthy individuals com

BACKGROUND: The bidirectional associations between negative self-conscious emotions such as shame and guilt and substance use are poorly understood. Longitudinal research is needed to examine the causes, consequences, and moderators of negative self-conscious emotions in people who use substances.
METHODS: Using parallel process latent growth curve modeling, we assessed bidirectional associations between shame and guilt and substance use (i.e., number of days in the past 30 used stimulants, alcohol to intoxication, other substances, or injected drugs) as well as the moderating role of positiv

The self-conscious emotions (SCE) of guilt, shame, pride, and embarrassment are moral emotions, which motivate adherence to social norms and personal standards and emerge in early childhood following the development of self-awareness. Gender stereotypes of emotion maintain that women experience more guilt, shame, and embarrassment but that men experience more pride. To estimate the magnitude of gender differences in SCE experience and to determine the circumstances under which these gender differences vary, we meta-analyzed 697 effect sizes representing 236,304 individual ratings of SCE states

Despite the proliferation of studies documenting outcomes in sexually abused victims, gender differences remain understudied. The bulk of studies have relied on retrospective samples of adults with insufficient representation of male victims to explore gender specificities. This study examined differential outcomes among boy and girl victims of sexual abuse. A predictive model of outcomes including abuse characteristics and sense of guilt as mediators was proposed. Path analysis was conducted with a sample of 447 sexually abused children (319 girls and 128 boys), aged 6-12. Being a girl was a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Involvement in wartime combat often conveys a number of deleterious outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, hostility, aggression, and suicidal ideation. Less studied is the effect of engagement in wartime atrocities, including witnessing and perpetrating abusive violence.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This study employed path analysis to examine the direct effects of involvement in wartime atrocities on hostility, aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation independent of combat exposure, as well as the indirect effects via guilt and PTSD symp

According to appraisal theorists, anger involves a negative event, usually blocking a goal, caused by another person. Critics argue that other-agency is unnecessary, since people can be angry at themselves, and thus that appraisal theory is wrong about anger. In two studies, we compared anger, self-anger, shame, and guilt, and found that self-anger shared some appraisals, action tendencies, and associated emotions with anger, others with shame and guilt. Self-anger was not simply anger with a different agency appraisal. Anger, shame, and guilt almost always involved other people, but almost ha

INTRODUCTION: Little research has explored the constructs of grief and shame-proneness for pregnant and early parenting women seeking recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) and the impact on parents' and children's well-being.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the contexts of reported guilt and shame and the associations with grief and loss among pregnant and early parenting women in SUD recovery.
METHODS: Using a community based participatory research (CBPR) approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 30 pregnant and early parenting women with SUD who were recruited from a resid

BACKGROUND: OBJECTIVE: Having a child diagnosed with cancer is stressful for the whole family and may cause significant psychological impact on parents and siblings. Chronic, life-altering diseases may also have similar effects in siblings due to the daily life changes in the family to accommodate the child with chronic disease. We investigated the impact of having a sibling with cancer or type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on the psychological features of adolescents, with particular focus on self-conscious emotions such as guilt and shame-which are associated with the development of psychopatho

BACKGROUND: Research has consistently linked symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to diminished social support. Key factors that may explain this relationship are trauma-related shame, guilt, and self-blame, which are common among survivors of sexual violence.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the mediating role of trauma-related shame, guilt cognitions, and self-blame in the association between PTSD symptoms and perceived social support among Arabic-speaking women with a history of sexual violence exposure.
METHODS: Participants included N = 3,419 Arabic-speaking, treatment-se

Previously, using fMRI, we demonstrated lower connectivity between right anterior superior temporal (ATL) and anterior subgenual cingulate (SCC) regions while patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) experience guilt. This neural signature was detected despite symptomatic remission which suggested a putative role in vulnerability. This randomised controlled double-blind parallel group clinical trial investigated whether patients with MDD are able to voluntarily modulate this neural signature. To this end, we developed a fMRI neurofeedback software (FRIEND), which measures ATL-SCC coupling

The current project seeks to integrate literatures on personality risk for antisocial behavior (ASB) by examining how callous-unemotional traits relate to (a) the development of disinhibited traits and (b) the association between disinhibited traits and ASB. In Study 1, using a nationally representative sample of youth (N > 7,000), we examined whether conduct problems and lack of guilt assessed during ages 4-10 years predicted levels of and changes in disinhibited traits over the course of adolescence, and moderated associations between these traits and ASB. High levels of childhood conduct pr

This study investigates how parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems during early adolescence are linked to adolescents' social adjustment through family-level mechanisms, including marital conflict, psychological control through guilt, and emotional insecurity. Drawing on emotional security theory and a three-wave longitudinal design, data were collected from 281 families beginning when adolescents were in seventh grade and followed annually over 3 years. Structural equation modeling revealed that parental depressive symptoms and drinking problems at Time 1 predicted increased destr
