Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections have a significant impact on small ruminants worldwide. The widespread multidrug resistance in nematodes has led to the investigation of novel compounds. The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro effect of recently synthesized diaryl dichalcogenides: diacetal ditelluride (LQ07), diacetal diselenide (LQ62), and diacetyl diselenide (LQ68), individually and in combination with ivermectin (IVM) against GIN, predominantly Haemonchus contortus (78 %). The compounds were tested through the egg hatch (EHT) and the larval migration inhibition test (L

The primary aim of this study was to compare the in vivo responses to orally administered doses of albendazole (5 mg/kg body weight) between experimentally infected sheep and goats. Fifty-four Improved Valachian lambs and 54 Saanen goat kids were split into six groups of nine animals. The sheep and goats were infected with larvae of the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Haemonchus contortus containing 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80 % of the isotype-1 β-tubulin gene codon 200 alleles previously shown to be associated with benzimidazole (BZ)-resistance. All groups of goats generally had higher mean

Haemonchus contortus is the most pathogenic and economically restrictive gastrointestinal nematode in the small ruminant industry globally. Morbidity, poor cross-bodily state, and mortality of sheep in Lesotho suggest the presence of H. contortus. The present study investigated the morphological, molecular, and population genetics of H. contortus third-stage larvae infecting sheep in four ecological zones (EZ) of Lesotho. Coprocultures were prepared for larval morphological identification and PCR determination. Larvae were identified morphologically as 100% H. contortus. The Second Internal Tr

Santa Ines, an indigenous Brazilian hair sheep, in comparison with European sheep breeds (e.g., Ile de France), show greater resistance against gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections, mainly to Haemonchus contortus. Here we bring novel findings that address some gaps regarding the resistance traits involved in the development of the immunity of young lambs in the first few weeks of life to H. contortus infection. This study aimed to compare parasitological, humoral, and local effector cell-mediated responses, also the histopathological differences in the abomasal mucosa of Santa Ines (SI)

BACKGROUND: Benzimidazole (BZ) anthelmintics are widely used to control infections with parasitic nematodes, but BZ resistance is an emerging threat among several nematode species infecting humans and animals. In Sudan, BZ-resistant Haemonchus contortus populations were recently reported in goats in South Darfur State. The objective of this study was to collect data regarding the situation of BZ resistance in cattle parasitic nematodes in South Darfur using phenotypic and molecular approaches, besides providing some epidemiological data on nematodes in cattle.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major constraint to the survival and productivity of animals. In southern China, goats are the most important small domestic ruminants.
METHODS: From May 2013 to May 2017, we conducted a longitudinal study of hircine GIN infections in Huangshantou Town, Gongan County, Hubei Province, China, using fecal egg counts.
RESULTS: Our investigation revealed that the GINs of goats in Hubei Province have changed significantly. Over 90% of eggs detected in the first month of investigation, May 2013, belonged to the species Haemonchus contortus and C

Haemonchus contortus infections have been increasingly reported in ungulates from cold climates even though past studies have shown that the free-living juveniles from this species survive poorly under freezing conditions. Overwintering strategies of H. contortus have not been documented in the Unites States Northern Great Plains. A PCR survey identified H. contortus as vastly predominant trichostrongyle species present (in addition to occasional detections of Teladorsagia sp.) in a closed farm flock of sheep from Brookings County, SD. Benzimidazole (BZ) and avermectin (AV) anthelmintics had b

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of periparturient metabolizable protein (MP) nutrition on resistance to Haemonchus contortus in single rearing Ile de France and Santa Ines ewes. The restriction-fed iso-energetic diet was calculated to provide either 0.8 (low MP diet) or 1.3 (high MP diet) times MP, from three weeks before parturition until eight weeks into lactation. The ewes were experimentally infected with 1000 H. contortus infective larvae (L3) three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), starting five weeks before the predicted date for parturition until a total of 1

Anilides bearing a guanidino, thioallophanato, isothioallophanato or amidino group in the ortho position were synthesised (6) for investigations of their anthelmintic effects, and tested against sheep trichostrongylides. The most active anilides are those containing a 5-alkylthio, 5-alkylsulphinyl (alkyl = C3H7, C4H9), 5-phenylthio, 5-phenylsulphinyl or 4-phenylsulphonyloxy group, and a guanidino group substituted at both nitrogen atoms by a methoxycarbonyl group. The most active anthelmintic anilides are the form-, propion-, butyr- and methoxy-acetanilides (e.g. 60, 61, 66, 95, 100, 110). Of

In contrast to observations in former years treatment of ewes after parturition with 5 to 7.5 mg/kg fenbendazole was not fully effective in removing Haemonchus contortus. Comparison of the H contortus populations in the lambs of these ewes and those of untreated ewes later in the year revealed that the treatment resulted in fenbendazole resistance and also in side resistance to other benzimidazoles. Though the faecal egg counts of the treated ewes were low, the prophylactic effect of the treatment on the population build up of H contortus in the lambs was very limited.

Lambs severely parasitized by Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum, and Nematodirus were treated with fenbendazole (methyl 5-(phenylthio)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate) given at 3 dose levels: 3.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg/kg of body weight. Efficacies against these genera, except Haemonchus and Nematodirus, were 100% at the 3 dose levels. Efficacies for the 3 doses against Haemonchus were 93.4, 95.3, and 99.8%, respectively, and against Nematodirus, 99.5, 99.6, and 100%. Efficacies for the doses against Trichuris were 69.1, 83.6, and 98.2%. Toxicosis due to the durg was not s

In this study, the anthelmintic potential of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves and Embelia ribes seeds was evaluated against Haemonchus contortus by both in vitro (egg hatch assay, EHA; larval development assay, LDA; and adult mortality assay, AMA) and in vivo assays (faecal egg count reduction test, FECRT). Ethanolic extract of M. oleifera (MOEE) exhibited maximum inhibitory effects on egg hatching (87.77%) and larval development (86.97%) along with complete adult mortality (100% after 12 hours of incubation) @ 16.0 mg/mL and 32.0 mg/mL, respectively. However, etha

Goats are important livestock species in tropical and subtropical regions. However, they are susceptible to gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections, which can significantly reduce their productivity. Therefore, accurate diagnosis and effective control of GIN are essential for the management of goat production. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of detecting two GIN species in fecal samples using a DNA quantification method and quantifying the parasite load for each species. We identified two species, Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis, by direct DNA sequenci

The population of South American camelids (SAC) has been steadily growing in Europe, where they are confronted with the regional endoparasite population of ruminants. As there are no anthelmintic drugs registered for use against nematode infections in SACs, anthelmintics (AH) available for ruminants or horses are usually applied. Reports indicating potential failures in administered AH are increasing. However, the generally low egg counts in SACs complicate the application of resistance tests in the field. The present study reports a follow-up study on SAC farms where anthelmintic resistance (

BACKGROUND: Haemonchosis is a fatal disease of small ruminants caused by the parasite Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus). The most common drugs used in the treatment of H. contortus include albendazole, oxfendazole, and ivermectin. However, as previously reported in the treatment of haemonchosis, these medicines have acquired drug resistance problems over time. Interestingly, natural plant compounds have demonstrated promising effects in the treatment of H. contortus. Therefore, the current study evaluated the effects of plant extract, Ferula asafetida, against common drugs such as albendazol

The most important and broad-spectrum drug used to control the parasitic worms to date is ivermectin (IVM). Resistance against IVM has emerged in parasites, and preserving its efficacy is now becoming a serious issue. The parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus (Rudolphi, 1803) is economically an important parasite of small ruminants across the globe, which has a successful track record in IVM resistance. There are growing evidences regarding the multigenic nature of IVM resistance, and although some genes have been proposed as candidates of IVM resistance using lower magnification of genome,

Infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in small ruminants are becoming increasingly harder to treat due to the development of anthelmintic resistance. Across Swedish sheep farms, Haemonchus contortus is one of the more persistent and pathogenic species encountered. Benzimidazole drugs, such as albendazole, are still widely used to control the GIN burden in small ruminants. However, the decline in efficacy of this drug has been observed across the country. In this study, we aimed to continue to investigate the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the β tubulin gene associat
